Dominica’s “lush paradise” has once again attracted international attention.

Yahoo! Travel has named Dominica among 10 countries branded the “world’s best tropical destinations both near and far”. The other countries are Bonaire, Arunachal Pradesh, India; Singapore; Hawaii’s Big Island; Gorongosa National Park, Mozambique; Wet Tropics of Queensland, Australia; St. John, US Virgin Islands; Vanuatu and Panama.

The article reads: “Lush rainforests, savannahs teeming with wildlife, fertile farmlands, and a diverse population of mammalian and plant life. Sound good? If so, a tropical vacation might be perfect for you. The tropics are irresistible to vacationers who like to go to the beach, but also want a little something extra, be it hiking, zip-lining, or snorkeling. We’ve rounded up 10 of the world’s best tropical destinations, both near and far. Read on to start dreaming about (and planning) your own tropical escape.”

Regarding Dominica, the article states: “Dominica welcomes visitors with the allure of nature. Tropical forests cover more than two thirds of the island, and within this lush paradise lies a boiling lake, sulphur springs, botanical gardens, and around 1,200 plant species. Additionally, the island is home to Morne Trois Pitons National Park, the first UNESCO World Heritage site in the eastern Caribbean. On the waterfront, the island teems with coral reefs, perfect for viewing sea life up close with a dive or snorkeling excursion. Known as the “Whale Watching Capital of the Caribbean,” Dominica is the only island where sperm whales frolic all year round, so you have a great chance of spotting one of these majestic creatures during your vacation.”

Are you aware that the person who translated the Testament visited Dominica before he did? Yes, long, long time ago people were visiting Dominica, and very prominent ones I must say Therefore it is speculated that he “Land of Eden” is referring to Dominica.

We knew this already, but its nice to be recognised by others.

After visits to other countries you can’t help comparing their natural landscape with Dominica’s.
Yes Roseau needs a major refurbishment, but this recognition is not about a particular part of the island, its about Dominica in general.

I know that not every one feels the same about this beautiful island, but trust me, once you have been away and return you appreciate the natural beauty of the island more.

Remember what Dorothy (Wizard of Oz) said ‘There’s no place like home’.

Listen, I have only visited your beauty island just ONCE, but I know that when I came there the people were absolutely amazing and friendly. The sites were out of this world and I know that I will be coming back real soon.

I’ve been to a lot of islands in the Caribbean. Each one had their own uniqueness, but there is something about Dominica which stands out.

Beautiful place+ wonderful people = Dominica

Do yo know that God built Dominica for himself? He however has allowed us to use it temproarily. Unfortunately, judging from the way we behave towards each other in God’s land, we have not been very good stewards even when we have done certain good things, to the environment. Others come here and recognize the jewel, the gift, the treasure. Those of us who were privileged to be borne here are too caught up in destroying God’s gift that we do not see the beauty that resides here and potentially among us. We love to see the bad and wallow in doing bad to each other

We can begin to take better care of God’s Dominica by starting to take care of ourselves – how we relate with each other is part of our stewardship responsibility. Love each other as we love ourselves and aim to love each other as God loves us.

    God bless Dominica.

    Dear Shatta:

As a fellow Dominican whose heart swells with joy when I meet another Dominican in my travels or when I get good news about my beloved island, I am appalled at your repugnant statement. It is not your fault. I understand that people who are not mentally well tend to belittle others in order to feel secure in their own dark little corners. If you are willing, I have a couple of friends who are psychotherapists. They will work with you for free. They will even come to your dark little corner to work with you. Don’t worry. They have flashlights. They will find you.

This is from our national anthem:

We must prosper! Sound the call,
    In which everyone rejoices,
“All for Each and Each for All.

while i commend the efforts of the Ministry of Tourism and discover dominica for successful promotion of Dominica as a nature island thus far, i think there needs to be a collaborative effort by the authorities to keep the city clean, lets cover the gutters in the city, this place smeels too much, in my travels this is the only city that smells, this mayor must address that smell in the city, its a shame. see no need why the executive director of discover dominica must meet with the mayor to discuss the situation in the city, it is clear that this mayor is not doing his job and Mr piper must get on with addressing matters that are more important to make our nature isle be known out there, Dominica needs men of action in getting things done not those political hacks like the mayor who is asleep

Yep! Trust me Roseau is not no city…. Have you visited other cities in the Caribbean? It is time for the Government to stop talking and act. It is a shame to tell someone this is our city. what have we become a musuem? The land is blessed yes and Dominica is a very beautiful country, just looking at the length and breath of the Island anyone can see that this is beauty. but we cannot just sit and say we tropical we need to get more jobs in the country, more night life, more malls and parks and factories, let’s make breadfruit drink and get our name on the market let us use the land let us not only be known as a tropical destination but a very developed nation where all for each and each for all is priority.

that is such great news for DA.. It seems DA is getting a lot of of international recognition lately..
We the citizens should do our best and behave ourselves in a manner that will attract tourists to come to our shores..We should welcome visitors and treat them with respect..

A note to the government of DA: “we need to start seeing commercials on TV about DA ” we see Antigua, Barbados, St. Lucia..we need to start seeing DA, so more people will know about our beautiful nature island.. We do not have the white sandy beaches, but we have the rain forest, sulphur springs, waterfalls, boiling lake, whale watching..There are many people in this world who love adventure and we if we let them know what we have to offer, they will come to our shores..
Television is one of the most effective and fastest way of advertising and i believe the government should seriously look into that..

In addition, sponsor some US game shows so that the winners will win a trip to Dominica, liaise with some reality tv show so they can film a segment in Dominica…Go out and reach out to the market. Then the market will reach out to us.

This recognition is wonderful confirmation of the way many Dominicans feel about our native land. It is so sad that the challenges, pressure and stress of our daily lives conspire to prevent us from taking a little time out to appreciate and enjoy this beautiful natural treasure that God has given us the lovely pleasure of calling home. Ironically, the greatest appreciation for this gem of ours may come from foreign strangers and visitors.

Ultimately though, I know we will continue to have both subtle and not so subtle differences of opinions on various articles posted on DNO. However, this post is one of those instances where you will find that almost all DNO readers and Dominicans at large stand united in positive agreement.

      @Shatta:

Those who gave you H-E-L-L for writing such an unbecoming comment are accurate. You deserve it. How could you ever have considered making such a statement? What do you have against Grand Bay? The next time you comment on this Website make it sensible, will you?
The picture and article pertaining to our beautiful island of Dominica is a compliment to Dominicans. Your comment is out-of-place and makes no sense whatsoever. You sound like one bitter person who lacks a heart of gold – of love.
It is time to ask Our Lord Jesus Christ forgiveness for your derogatory words which are unChristian-like. Worship, prayer, penance and sacrifice will assist you to mellow your heart and make you a loving person.
Your comment should never have been allowed to be posted on this Website. In fact, if you continue with such degrading comments, you should be prohibited from commenting.
Furthermore, you act as though you are a perfect person and where you were born and live is the best place. Wrong!
I know some Grand Bay people. People are people, whatever country, town or village they are from. I would never make such a statement. I have not visited Grand Bay. I hope on my next visit to D/ca I will do so.
May God bless and grace you with a clean heart and mind and obviously what comes out of your mouth. You are also in dire need of His mortal (moral) and spiritual enlightenment.

Listen Shatta, Shitti? whatever your name. I am breaking my usual posting etiquette and protocol and making this personal since my father’s family hail from Grandbay. If you are somehow mentally disturbed, I will still pray for you. Your deranged and lunatic comments seem to suggest that you might have steered at the super moon a bit too long the other night. If indeed you are perfectly sane then you need to crawl back under the filthy rock from which you came. Otherwise, it is very important that you always take your medication to avoid being seen as the jack-ass that you aspire to be.
