Douglas presents development and improvement in tourism sector

Douglas

Discover Dominica Authority, DASPA and the Ministry of Tourism formed part of the Dominica delegation to the 18th Annual FCCA Conference and Trade Show held in Puerto Rico Oct 2-7, 2011.

At that conference, Dominica’s Minister of Tourism Ian Douglas presented Dominica’s key off-season developments and improvements to the Cruise executives at a Ministers of Tourism and Cruise Line Executive meeting.

Douglas detailed the Government’s work in improving the road networks, more specifically the roads leading to Trafalgar and to Laudat, the location of many of Dominica’s natural attractions, the west coast road and the road to the Melville Hall Airport which is the roadway used to the Emerald Pool.

The Minister discussed port improvements to the fendering system, as well as two key water projects; the filtration system at  Antrim which will help with resolving turbidity issues for cruise vessels taking water from Dominica, and the 500,000 gallon reserve tank being constructed at Morne Bruce which will impact the volume and pressure of water when cruise lines are being supplied.

The Minister also discussed the Government’s intention to establish Trafalgar Falls as a premium site, as well as amendments to the Tourism Standards and Regulations Act.

All of these changes were well received by the cruise line executives.

This may sound absurd but could be very true: This may very well be a deliberate contrivance to keep Roseau that way because the government have not won there for quite some time now. We are the forgottens and the outcasts. Why else would it be kept in such a degradative manner. surveys were conducted for the home repairs and renovations program in Roseau many years ago, but thus far not one project has taken off.

Sometimes I really feel sorry for you Ian. I feel even more sorry Mr- Piper. He may have some good ideas but you Iam are a waste in tourism and a lot of things have to change to push tourism forward.

    Ian you had your chance.

Agreed with the main point. I think they can start with the basics like street signs.

I hope that after the new State House project is complete the government turns it focus on rehabilitating Roseau and then Portsmouth.

Roseau is one shameful higgledy piggledy mess. It is the face of Dominica, as that is what tourists first see as they step off the cruise ship and until this issue is dealt with the tourist industry will remain in a lamentable state.

In these modern times it is unacceptable for any capital city of a tourist destination to remain in such a state.

How much longer are the government and the attitudes of many Dominicans going to remain with their heads buried in the sand and continue in a state of denial?

There will be prosperity throughout Dominica as everyone will benefit as soon as the town planners and bulldozers have done their jobs!!

    God Bless Dominica.

Love this expression, “higgley piggley.” And I think it an adequate deinition of our so-called city. OMG!!

That said and your point well made, Observer, it begs the question: When will the powers that be begin to truly recognize that we trully need an alternative first town.

One can think of Portsmouth – for all its natural blessings – the only viable alternative for genuine Dominican advancement.

I mean, lets not kid ourselves, minus the laissez faire attitude of its inhabitants, Portsmouth is simply a natural wonder. To enumerate its endowment here will take to long.

Unbiased readers will agree that unless and until Portsmouth and immediate environs is the spotlighted for development, Dominica’s future will continue to remain bleak.

i supporet the thinking that a prosperous and ecomonic viable portsmouth is the only way forward for this island.

Unless you can legitimately explain (i.e., provide evidence for your assertion) why Portsmouth is “better” as the capital than Roseau, it will be impossible for “unbiased readers” to agree with you, since your claim sounds like bias itself at the moment.

@OBSERVER,IT CANT BE SAID BETTER THAN THAT,I STRONGLY BELIEVE REASON WHY CARNIVAL CRUISE LINE PULLED OUT OTHERS WILL FOLLOW AS WELL,IF NOTHING AINT GET DONE,ROSEAU NEEDS PROPER DRAINAGE AND SIDEWALKS.
