The Waitukubuli Nature Trail (WNT), conceived by the Waitukubuli Ecological Foundation, is a 115 mile trail traversing the length of Dominica and displays the natural beauty that the island is known for. Though the trail is scheduled to be officially completed at year’s end, all segments are presently in a state of hiking readiness.
Hikers Clement Rabess and Jerry Brisbane will attempt to be the first Dominicans to complete all fourteen segments of the WNT continuously. The hikers will set out on Saturday, March 12th 2011, from the village of Scotts Head at the southern end of the trail and head to the northern village of Capuchin then south to complete the trek at the Cabrits National Park on Friday, 18th March 2011.
The seven day adventure is intended to promote Dominica’s newest tourist product, create and encourage a sense of ownership within local communities and to increase the numbers of local users and hikers.
The intention of the WNT is for hikers and users to immerse themselves in the natural environment of Dominica and explore its fauna, its flora, experience its local lifestyle, culture and people.
This activity will initiate a perpetual challenge for hikers to complete the trail in ever shorter time periods.
Positive vibes… Good to go. i hope they take alot of pictures. they doing it for all of us, the tourism vibes.
Where are the places that one can begin this hike. Is there an area near Roseau like Giraudel or perhaps Trafalgar that I can start this hike next time I come home? I enjoy hiking and this trail sounds like fun. Good job guys keep upo the good work. Hope there is a map of the trail available.
The trail starts from Scotts Head in the South and ends at the Cabrits in the North. You can visit http://www.waitukubulitrail.com for more information on the Waitukubuli National Trail.
Thanks much
Good to know! Congrats to Jerry and Clement! Good job DNO with your usual all round coverage. It is interesting that in the headline the words “local hikers” are used instead of just hikers. After all this is local news. It suggests that this may not be an expected and usual occurrence. As an avid hiker, it is refreshing to know of the renewed interests in hiking. Hiking is for everyone. More people will be encouraged to do this now! Who knows maybe soon there might be a written guide.
Where you does hike Pedro? In your sleep?
Don’t forget to pay me a visit up there in Morne au Diable. I will be looking forward to welcoming
you all guys. Me and my Maroon clan will be preparing a real spread of roast plantain, grilled
agouti, soup callalou with pumkin. Also available is some home made cane brew fermented to
perfection and will be served in a calabash. So come on up!!
Good that Jerry can get something useful to do with his time instead of just staying there and run his mouth against everything under the sun.
