Head of the Discover Dominica Authority (DDA), Colin Piper, wants more images loaded to social media which reflect the island in its rebuilding phase.

He said Dominica was trending the highest on the internet a few days following Tropical Storm Erika but it is now time to replace those images with that of rebuilding, recovery and reconstruction.

“For about 3 to 4 days Dominica was trending the highest on the internet and it was as a result of the pictures of the devastation that were being shown,” he said. “Now all of the United States, and to a certain extent, all of the world got to see the pictures of devastation and that is the image that they have in their minds, but we have not been able to get the images of rebuilding, recovery and reconstruction and the remarkable work that the government has done in terms of the bypasses and that the citizens of Dominica, have done in cleaning out and getting back to the new normal. The normal with some inconvenience but the normal that is going to face us moving forward.”

He continued, “We need to change the tide from images of devastation, we need now to reassure people that if they do come to Dominica they are going to have the same wonderful and unique experience as it relates to some of our natural sites.”

Meantime, Piper said, the country is now calling on regional and international countries for solidarity in the form of visiting the island over the next year.

“We are calling for solidarity from the French West Indies, the Caribbean region and further afield and letting people know that the way they can show their solidarity to Dominica is to visit over this next year and that we will be happy to welcome them and that if they want to see what Tropical Storm Erika has done, we will be happy to show it to them but we will also be happy to make sure that they have some time to experience what Dominica is known for, snorkeling, diving, hiking and the like,” he said.

He noted that now the DDA is in the process of discussing with some agencies on how they can put some campaigns together to promote the island.

“Hopefully in the first part of November so we will be able to roll out and promote the wonderful attributes of Dominica and that encourages people to make Dominica their next vacation destination,” Piper said.

He pledged a more aggressive approach to promoting Dominica.

Man who cares about that crap; disasters take place every day the world over, people die every day. The government and private sector simply rebuild their countries. Who cares about photographs, do you believe anybody in Europe, and North America care about your rebuilding process and your waste of time pictures, what is that going to prove?

Look at this: (CNN)”The rain may have stopped, but South Carolina is grappling with a host of new concerns. Dam breaks. Billions of dollars in damage. And rivers that still haven’t crested.” You might expect that to be on the News all over America around the clock, its not!

I don’t know about the 24 hour news channels, but the flooding in South Carolina was the lead story on NBC Nightly News last night.

Yes, it came over on some stations, but the point I am making it is not a round the clock broadcast or everyday. By the time the water subsides, people will go about their business cleaning up and repairing the damage, but nobody is going to ask for pictures showing progress of rebuilding.

What happens next: those who has insurance will be paid for any damages they suffer. Those who do not have insurance coverage, will apply for help from FEMA, these guys in Dominica rattle off simply to make their presence known.

Last night in Florence an entire block went up in smoke dozens of business went up in flames that made the morning news and that’s it. It is 6.59 P. M. I have not heard one word about the fire on the evening news.

He made some excellent points, to show the re-building and of Dominica’s progress after TS Erika. He opened our eyes. :)
You will note that some people love consistent sad stories. These make and dominate the News. It is a worldwide situation. Something bad occurs and the newspapers are sold out. The Media has field days. TV and Radio ratings, viewers and listeners increase. Oh, they make a mint. Everyone talks about these occurrences, even strangers talk to strangers about them.
Which reminds me, this is what the PM meant that TS Erika brought people together. Disasters and occurrences, even though they do not directly affect us, to a certain degree, they do.
Folks, I do not reside in Canada for nothing. I know that.
He said it is high time to show the effort of re-building Dominica to the world so as to encourage visitors to the island. We do know that Dominica needs tourism which is good for the economy. The sooner the better.

Had this country been success orientated, Mr. Piper’s would have been in another position. What are the successes in Dominica’s tourism can we attribute to Mr. Piper efforts. It is quite telling, Mr.Piper has in the last three years spent hundreds of thousands of dollars and more in civil servants time to put on the Nature Island Challenge and yet he has been unable to convince the minister of finance of the need to maintain the National Trail. There seems to be some disconnect here, or maybe not. This is how we do it in D/a.
