Two prison inmates obtain grade ones in English A at CSEC Exams

Two inmates at the Dominica State Prison have obtained grade ones in English A at this year’s Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Examinations.

Superintendent of the Dominica State Prison, Kenrick Jean-Jacques, revealed during a recent radio interview, that fourteen inmates wrote the CSEC Examinations in English A on May 9th, 2017.

This was made possible by the Adult Education Division in the Ministry of Social Services, Family and Gender Affairs in collaboration with the Dominica Prison Service in the Ministry of Justice, Immigration and National Security.

“Out of the 14 inmates who sat the exams, we had 4 passes – 2 one’s and 2 three’s and we had a number of fours and fives,” Jean-Jacques said. “We are hoping that we can grow from strength-to-strength and we can continue to offer these exams to the inmates in an effort to rehabilitate them and to empower them, and to give them the prerequisites for going back to the communities and being productive.”

Meantime, Acting Adult Education Officer, Francisca Joseph, who spoke to the media at a national exhibition held in Roseau on Friday, said the Division hopes to continue that process as long as it is available.

She said when the inmates leave the State Prison they will have the necessary qualifications.

Joseph said that in addition to the CSEC program, the officers will have open days in their various communities and do a lot of mobilization drives, “to really get the community involved in the Adult Education Programme.”

She thanked the facilitator Toska Davis who was instrumental in getting some of the families of the inmates to pay for the exams.

The Adult Education Division has been collaborating with the Dominica Prison Service over several years now, in the organization and implementation of Literacy, Continuing Education and Entrepreneurial Skills training programmes geared at equipping the inmates with the relevant skills and capacities to assist them in being better able to cope in mainstream society.

Nice to see what can be done when effort is applied. So happy for those who passed, and also for those who sat the exams but did not pass. You all saw the importance of education and decided to try to improve. That is fantastic. To those who passed, keep reaching for higher heights. To those who did not pass, Don’t ever stop trying doe the positive things in life; you can achieve your goals some time in the future. Just KEEP TRYING.

This is good news! Everyone note that they could be rehabilitated and that they need a second chance. As I have stated, they were wayward ones who fell through the cracks. There are many reasons why they did.
Counsel them, question them about what caused them to do so. It helps for them to talk and let off some steam about their previous life. This is also a rehabilitation process. Some may need a little push to do better. They have some degree of intelligence. It just needs to be cultivated, to give them a sense of well-being and hope, to be occupied and to live a productive life. They need to know that sensible and realistic law-abiding D/cans do not detest them and do not give up on them.
This is good for them, for D/ca. May they continue to excel. May others follow suit. They also need to be told/be reminded about Our Lord Jesus Christ and what He wants for them, expects of them, of every human being, one way or the other.

Their achievement is pleasing to God that they are trying to live a better life. Their parents must be elated.
Interestingly, I recently heard on the US Catholic Radio that God knows (of course) that there is good and bad in everyone. This is why He is compassionate and forgiving.
We must say, “There but for the grace of God go I” and encourage them.
It really is a mystery why some people lead a law-abiding life and others do not. What got into them to cause them to be lawless? The person who knows better (than we do) of the whys and wherefores is God. He knows most people are not beyond rehabilitation and wants them, the willing ones to get a second chance to turn their life around. It is also good for the country and for society in general.
Thanks to those who made it possible for them. God bless you! God bless them!

Well done. An educated inmate will most likely not return to prison. What a great way to reduce crime!!
