U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS ASSESSING DAMAGE FROM HURRICANE MARIA

U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS (September 20, 2017) – The Government of the United States Virgin Islands is working to assess damage to the Territory following the passage of Hurricane Maria.

The eye of the Category 5 storm passed south of St. Croix overnight (Tuesday into early Wednesday morning), bringing with it hurricane-force winds, heavy rainfall and flooding. The islands of St. John, St. Thomas and Water Island, which are still recovering from the impact of Hurricane Irma, endured tropical storm conditions.

The Department of Tourism continues to encourage travelers to postpone trips to the islands at this time as it further evaluates the damage caused by the hurricanes and coordinates evacuation efforts.

Communication throughout the Territory is limited, and the Department of Tourism is in the process of collecting information from tourism stakeholders.

“We are thankful for life today – let’s continue to support each other as we recover from these weather events,” said Beverly Nicholson-Doty, Commissioner of Tourism.

The Department of Tourism will continue to provide updates once received, and thanks everyone for their thoughts, prayers and assistance as the Territory works on its recovery efforts. To assist with the recovery and reconstruction, visit www.usvirecovery.org.

Need to get my daughter off St. John. Her name is Tracy West. She has a lung problem and needs to come back to Texas. She has no money and I don’t know how to get her any money or a flight or boat home. Any suggestion will be welcomed. Are cruise ships coming back for any evacuees? She has lived on St. John over a year and has friends there but says she can’t do it anymore right now. Please help.

Did you contact your US Embassy?

Your best option is to contact the State Department, and they will advise you of your best option.

If she is alive they will evacuate her; as long as she is an American citizen, they are obligated to render her every and all assistance possible.

In the Caribbean people are usually eager and willing to help those who are in need of help in good or bad times!

Admin, it seems you remained operational all through the storm and after; how come you have not posted any photographs of damages done to the country.

We here Skerrit said everything money can buy is all gone. Is this true?

Something is wrong, we are not getting any news out of Dominica, so it is difficult for me to even trust your articles after the storm. How come you are reporting about what is happening, or is going to happen in the Virgin islands, but unable to inform people of any damage in our country?

We are only operational from the US. As you know, all forms of telecommunications on the island were cut off for a couple of days. DNO personnel in Dominica are without means to publish anything. We are focused on posting verified information as we receive it and will strive to obtain a first-hand account as soon as that is viable. Thank you for visiting DNO.

        Thanks for responding!

I saw only the camera, and not the picture before your explanation.
