Participants of a skills training program have been urged to be serious and make the best use of an eight week course that will provide them with the working knowledge and entrepreneurial skills necessary to survive.
Culinary Arts Facilitator Marilyn Cuffy-Morris, made the call to over 40 persons at an orientation exercise at the Public Service Training center on Monday for an eight week training program in Culinary Arts and Creative Manicure and Pedicure services .
She asked participants to be regular and punctual during the ‘short’ eight week program.
‘One of the things that we are going to be doing is working as a team, so we would like you all to come with different ideas and suggestions, be innovative, make it interesting, make it exciting; and last but not least, love what you are doing. In order for you to succeed you have to love what you are doing’, she urged the participants.
Addressing the same function, Minister for Employment Dr .John C. Mc Intyre, said the program will tackle key areas for starting a business.
‘You will be exposed to the techniques in the culinary art industry, starting and managing a small business, money management, identifying special leakages and the benefits of social security.
He said that at the end of the training the participants would have the necessary experience to create jobs for themselves.
‘At the end of this exercise and experience, with the ministry of employment you would have journeyed towards an income generating skill or transition into getting a job or creating a job for yourself individually.
‘Creating jobs for your selves as groups by pulling together financial resources you will be getting weekly and making a joint application to the employment and small business Support agency for additional funding. Where necessary to make your business dream a reality’. He pointed out.
One of the participants, Dorothy David of Roseau, said she always wanted to improve her skills in culinary arts.
‘I got the information of the program from a friend and of course culinary cooking that has been part of me. I have always been interested in developing my cooking skills and so I am here to take the opportunity to enhance it’. She said.
David wants to open her own business.
‘My own business definitely, I will probably be working with the hotels to gain some knowledge and of course move on from there. I am absolutely excited I believe this is an excellent opportunity a lot of persons should take advantage of it is not every day you get these kind of opportunities and I want to thank the Prime Minister for his genuine efforts in supplying our stipend to pay our buses and that kind of a thing. And I am really looking forward in taking part of the program and eventually completing’, she said.
Another participant, Jacia Pascal, told DNO that she is thrilled about the opportunity since she used to do it for her close family but not on a wide scale. Pascal also said that she intends to further her education at the Dominica State College.
