UPDATE: Dominicans stranded in St. Kitts

Dominicans in St. Kitts
Dominicans stranded at the airport in St. Kitts

Some angry, frustrated Dominicans in St Kitts stormed LIAT’s counter at midnight Sunday after being told that their promised late night flight to Dominica had been cancelled.

This, after the 29 Dominicans who had just attended the 11th OECS Credit Union Summit in that country, had been stranded at the St. Kitt’s airport for over nine hours.

They were told that the flight to Dominica which LIAT had said would be scheduled to depart around 11.30 pm, had been cancelled because “the Melville Hall airport was closed.”

“The airport is closed and we are trying to speaking with the CEO to have it reopened to land,” a LIAT offical tried to explain to the irate passengers who were screaming “we want answers, we are tired, frustrated and hungry, take us to a hotel.”

Free-lance journalist Carlisle Jno. Baptiste, who is one of the 29, reports that it was well past midnight and after heated exchanges, when the LIAT official announced that they were making arrangements to have passengers housed at two hotels but warned, “we can’t say when you all will depart…”

The group was to have left St. Kitts at 4.50 pm Sunday on LIAT flight 511 bound for St. Maarten then onto Dominica but that flight did not materialize and according to Jno. Baptiste, the word from LIAT then was, “we will take you all home later.”

He said one LIAT official told passengers “hopefully, maybe at 11.30pm you all will depart.”

“It is just a shame the way we are being treated by LIAT, poor treatment, no communication at all. This is just not right,” Jno Baptiste told Dominica News Online last night from St. Kitts.

Just moments ago (Monday morning, August 26), Jno. Baptiste told DNO that there was still no word from LIAT as to when the group would be getting a flight back to Dominica.

“We do not know when we are leaving and we just sitting there waiting,” he said.

Skeritt complains that workers in Dominica are late or calling in sick! I agree You cant throw out the clock in these times things must run on time .So why is He Skeritt not calling for heads to roll in LIAT top management? He keeps talking about the staff of LIAT as if they are the problem!
His friends in High places in LIAT keep Him flying where he wants when He wants ,they even pull People off the Plane to fly Him.
He is Cohoots with LIAT.We need a PM who will call for “Heads to roll” and invite other airlines to compete with LIAT instead of investing in LIAT

    August 27, 2013

The problem is simple! We need a small airline in Dca with direct flights to San juan, Bdos, St. Lucia, St. Maarten and Antigua. Fact remains that we need and international airport but his administration which suffers from the lack of foresight continue to believe that this landing STRIP at Melvillehall coupled with an even shittier airline that Leave Island Any Time and NEVER sometimes while totally disregarding the clients and shareholders (People of Dominica) cannot, will not and will never be viable under the current operating procedures.

We had Cardinal and instead of subsidizing the airline for a few years until they became viable regionally we allowed politics to disengage our thought process and watched them fail. Typical Dominicans! Now our SSA bursting we all bawling but at the same time some still sining WE LOVE OUR PM. We need to take control of our destiny and remind government that they are our servants and not the other way around. But be reminded that …”Change Must Come” and that will be sooner rather than later.

sue them. sue them, sue them, sue them. sue them for loss of baggage, sue them for loss of time, sue them for stress, sue them for misrepresentation sue them for non performance, sue them for lack of service, sue them for the money invested and when their coffers are dry use the money to charter another airline! please sue sue them fan chou yo! just the cost of litigation will cause them to address their issues with service, if they don’t pay they will never respect Dominicans. their is always another way, with only 1 or 2 flights t DA every day, we can lease 6 planes, hire foreign pilots on contract until Dominican pilots are trained. 2 planes with 4 backups, 2 fuel tanks for fueling 1 small tanker to bring in the fuel. do the numbers liberate us from this disgraceful tragedy of an airline let them know we can grow our economy by investing in our people.

One or two employees could have attended the conference. On their return, they could have a national meeting inviting the other intended staff for the conference. Clearly, this is an action of misappropriation of credit union funds.

Do you remember this just last week?
“In the present circumstance what we need is a greater sensitivity on the part of LIAT,” he said.

Skerrit pointed out that the staff of LIAT must ‘rise to the occasion’ in what he described as ‘challenging times.’

“In challenging times you don’t want them to become too despondent and to abandon their responsibilities,” the prime minister said. “All of us in these circumstances must stick together and to see how we can minimize the impact on the traveling public.”

Skerrit said the airline can be criticized but he asked to what end.

“We can criticize, but to what end,” he stated. “You have a company like LIAT traveling through the region at a time when you have more people traveling than at any time. It will place a certain amount of stress.”

    • Credit Unionist
      August 26, 2013

Mr Skerrit does not go through the uncomfortable situation with LIAT so he can say anything. Who feels it knows it.
He hires a jet to take him from point A to B. He travels LIAT when it convenient to him. The ordinary traveler does not have that luxury.

we need another airline in the caribbean beside liat.Liat sucks right now

  10. Black Pearl
    August 26, 2013

These unfortunate situations will continue to happen as long as LIAT monopolizes inter-island flights combined with the absence of an international airport on Dominica. There should be no more excuses, the government needs to bite the bullet and start planning for at least a medium-sized international airport. This should be our BIG PROJECT. Despite the Prime Minister’s achievements, the fact that little progress has been made on the construction of an international airport his legacy would be considered a failure.

    • beholder
      August 26, 2013

Dream on. There is not enough traveling population to warrant an expensive expansion of our airport. And no place to extend the runway.
How many 117 passenger flights do you think are warranted for inter island travel or a direct flight from say Miami, Houston or Newark per week? Do you know what it costs to fuel and mid size Airbus ( old model still in service costs $70 Million US) plus maintenance and an upgrade in the personnel capable of flying it.

All of this does not excuse the dismal service provided by LIAT. If this airline were run efficiently, it could serve everyone on time and perhaps even turn a profit. This airline has some serious systemic problems, And the nations it serves need to address it for their own survival.

Liat needs to work with people better than that. There are still people who fly from out of the region to other islands and then into Dominica. They will start look for other options like taking the boat etc. shape up before a new investor comes in and does better.

Liat is sitting… sayaing talk allu talk…We can still do whatever we want ahahaha…I think we ALL understand break downs and what not of LIAT but could they ATLEAST Have some respect and treat their customers better is all…

I’m sure with proper service… there would not be much of a storm..

LIAT PEOPLE ARE VERY ARROGANT, IGNORANT! HITTY TITTY FOOLS! Who doesn’t give a damn about other people… is time someone sue them… especially when you pay big money for something… you book in advance… you prepare everything in advance and YET you still miss what you was suppose to go to because of them…

    It could be your

    1) day of school
    2) A cruise
    3) another connecting airline…

who ever is organizing LIAT schedules for their plane routes seems like they are pulling these stuff out of their butts and whichever one comes out they line them up… and just close there eyes and put them in whichever other they point on first.

trust me it’s terrible treatment… after they leave people stranded they still wanna be rude on it… I can understand the Delays and what not but MY GOD you could at least be nice to the people that are using your service…they are the ones helping you eat.

I remember when I was stranded in antigua… and barbados… when the Liat people said (they are not sure where your plane is so we don’t know what time they are coming) I did not threat nor was I angry…By now we should know Liat…so there was no point in being angry…( I mean I saw 4 different Islands I have seen before I liked it)

But when I got to the hotel OH MY GOODNESS the service…Liat told the people that 20 people was coming… over 50 people came… and no food…

the people in the hotel said… 20 people so 20 plates of food and they can’t give more food…people with children who came mins 2 two in the morning didn’t get any food… they refused to give them something to eat.

I don’t understand how a company can be SO disorganized it’s beyond me to be honest.

Everybody keeps posting that an international airport will solve the problems.

One needs a certain amount of air traffic to support an international airport. Dominica doesn’t have enough people coming and going to support this. The idea of “build it and they will come” likely isn’t true either.

Now, if the government would work hand in hand with the the island’s entrepreneurs to provide a happy and satisfying experience for our visitors then we could build on that foundation and maybe an international airport would work. All of us would benefit with more jobs and income.

Right now I just don’t see it.

Also, where there is TOO MUCH SQEWED VISION the people still perish. If we cannot take a vision or idea and work through it, check the pros and cons, list priorities, choose from alternatives and follow workable direction, we get nowhere. I suggest we start putting some good ideas in our comments and hopefully, someone may eventually use them.

With an international airport development and the marketing of this facility, we can expect a significant increase in stay over tourist arrivals.with the increase in stay over tourists and the resulting increased demand for hotel amenities, taxi services, food as well as enhanced opportunities for farmers to sell their products locally. . The opportunities to make money in agriculture results not only from selling locally, but also with the new airport, freight charges for airlifting goods to foreign markets is likely to be less than it is now. thus an intl airport has the ability to create employment in a number of fields..

the reason why we don’t have air traffic is because off our airport and the travel is very expensive to come here…. secondly, what’s the point of coming to dominica for a route to me transferred…so to obtain air traffic we need a better airport… it’s obvious….

so right now it’s kind of a “build it and they will come” method we have to approach

I thought night landing meant 6pm to 6am.Anyway, times are changing. Are we still going to remain mentally stuck in the in the 60’s? there should be no debate over the need for an international airport,it is long overdue. Here’s this, 20 years ago people could get jods with basic proficiency in their subjects. Now it’s useless.there is no value to it.General proficiency is demand.Well, our little airport is “basic”.its usefullness is limited, unlike an international airport which is “general” and the possibilities are endless.

  24. Disgusted..
    August 26, 2013

LIAT tells me they are not responsible for international flights.. So tell me why must I fly with an airline who leaves island anytime to make any sort of connections when the cost of the missed connections due to LIAT tardiness, is mine… How do they work that math? Close down ,,, LIAT needs to close up shop give someonelse to run a proper and reliable service. There is no reason y an airline should pride itself in being late majority of times … Or never present due to cancellation. I don’t care how much good customer service you think you may have the button line is people are fed up and frustrated with LIAT lousy crappy service… No one pays a ticket to sit in an airport for hours to hear excuses and nothing more frustrating to get that flight cancelled with no garauntee of a departure. Now what nonesense talk about Dominica airport closed.. You are going to blame the Melville airport staff for the consequences of your tardines? Really liat? Now you all know the status with the airport and its hours of operations.. Y should the airport staff go out their way to cover ur blonder yet again? i feel sorry for these dominicans stuck out there… Start speaking the truth to the people liat and stop treating us like dumb idiots. Cause we see right through you.. Time people stop making excuses for U LIAT and cover up ur blunders. Face the music. Pay for these accommodations. One day when u run bankrupt due to too many outstanding debts and your expenditure is much greater than your income mayb den your doors will close. But wait I forgot u all have the Governments there to cut the ropes from around LIAT neck all the time… … So I guess you have no reason to stop your incompetence and lousy service cause you have the governments of the Caribbean to bail you out every time you go in financial crisis… So yes the people have every right to make noise, cause they paid for a service and be it Dominica or st kitts.. They expect an efficient service….cause god knows LIAT tickets don’t come cheap… We can’t even use the phrase cheapness is worries…. Get ur act together… Before you get someone really really angry.. Stop taking the Caribbean for granted and for a ride…

When P.M. Skerritt commented on LIAT last week,I said he is free to say what he want, because he is not one of us,he travels first class.

My wife and I paid LIAT us$1928.00 to take us(including our son and daughter)from San Juan to Dominica July 19 and from DA. back to San Juan August 6.On our way back to the U.S.we arrived at the air port 1 hour and 45 minutes before departure time yet we were told “You are too late”.After asking the gentleman to explain the statement of his,he said the truth is “We are over booked, and I am telling you the truth we cannot guarantee you seat for the rest of this month. After a long and heated debate he told us we can leave tomorrow evening at 7:30, overnight in Antigua, spend the whole day in St. Martin, and arrive San Juan later in the night. Anyway since we missed our flight on jet blue from San Juan to Newark International Airport (NJ), we had to pay a penalty fee of us$170 each person (which amounts to US$680. We left Dominica Wednesday night, Stopped in Guadeloupe, overnight in Antigua, spend the whole day in St.Martin, and finally dropped us in Puerto Rico.
We finally reached home in NJ 5:55am Friday. In all we had to spend an extra US$800 plus.We also had to pay more for taxi because our original flight for Tuesday was to land at Newwark airport NJ,because of Liat we landed JFK NY.
Ok, Liat did pay the taxi to take us back to Melville Hall and paid the hotel in Antigua, but the extra US$800, we had to foot the bill.

In August 10,2011, my wife was booked to travel from Melville Hall to Antigua and take a connecting flight with Continental Airlines at 2pm to N.J. The plane landed at the Melville Hall but could not travel because of mechanical problems. So she had to remain in Dominica for an extra two days and paid Continental airlines an extra US$395 because the only seat available was first class. The guy at Liat gave me a voucher for $200EC for taking her back to the airport because it was their fault. After two years we have yet to receive a black cent from Liat

So P.M. SKerritt, you can talk, but we have to pay.

Wow: LIAT: “Leave Island Any Time”. That was what we Dominican students who went to study in the US used to say in the 80’s. You mean in 2013, it is even worse. I was in DA last year. So as not to “blow a gasket” or raise my blood pressure. I did not even worry when the flight was delayed for 2 hours in Antigua. International Airport is the answer for Dominica. Let’s pray fervently for God to answer our prayer for that International Airport wherever in DA. My friend from St. Vincent spent 3 days in Trinidad trying to get to the US because LIAT messed up the flight. I think it is time for this witch hunt to stop. We need to stop jumping on the band wagon without thinking things out. LIAT has attempted to get new plane to improve on their service. As with everything else they are going through the teething pains so people need to have a litle more patience. GIVE LIAT A BREAK. Those of us who have traveled on international flights know that the same thing always happens with international carriers. Just recently I checked the airfare on another airline for a flight from the VI to Dominica. It is almost US$800. LIAT’s fare remains at under US$500. GIVE LIAT A BREAK INSTEAD OF SUPPORTING THOSE WHO OBVIOUSLY HAVE THEIR OWN AGENDA.

My Aunt left Dominica on Thursday August 22nd bound for St thomas. she did not make it there till Sunday August 25th and she had to go thru Tortola to get to St Thomas. She spent thursday night Friday and saturday night in Antigua because Liat advised that the Pilot called in sick, then they said the pilots could not fly the plane that was available. aparently Liat had to charter a plane from anguilla to come to Antigua to take them to Tortola and then take the ferry from Tortola to St Thomas. Really??? That is really horrible. Liat you need to do something better than that and do it quick.

I am not hurt neither do I wish to sympathise with any Dominican that get themselves stranded at any airport. They were the ones who voted for the Skerrit labor Party Government, when the United Workers Party had everything in place to build an International Airport. Dominicans love their Prime Minister, therefore, what are they crying for, take it.

Sorry about what has happened to those who are stranded.

But y’all, this is not the norm. More than likely, most LIAT flights get to their destination the same day……….you might get their late but at least you get in.

Operating Rule 1 – If you intend to travel on LIAT, don’t leave Point A today for an important appointment or meeting today at Point B.

Operating Rule 2 – If possible, choose flights that enable you to have a # of hours between connections so as to enable you some time to play with in the event of delays.

I don’t know of any family member that is not totally disappointed with LIAT and our terrible airport condition in DA; and my family is huge. I have had too many ruined vacations because of LIAT and our lack of a proper airport. It’s either flight getting cancelled or plane can’t land in DA because of rain. Our Dominica is a beautiful island and I love my country, but lord knows, I am beginning to realize that there are other beautiful islands in other parts of the world besides the Caribbean.

From my own personal view the governmeent of dominica shouldn’t invest a dam cent in this airline. But rather allowed others to compete with them in this case we will have competition among them and the fee for travelling will become less to hell with his jerk airline the entire management has to go its a dam shame every week is the same incident. And nothing seems to change.when bthe pressure is realy on the executives coes with their rhetoric.

This is how Caribbean people suffer with no compensation. Not one dime. Not a penny.

But what I saying there nuh? No even an apology, much less for refund and recovery of lost monies. Don’t mention destress caused by that ridiculous airline.

One day the wrong passanger will be affected n Liat will definitely be taken to the cleaners. Is it because Caribbean people are too lenient? They don’t bother taking liat to court. Mainly because they cannot afford it. But I think the time will come

LIAT is a disgrace as an airline. They need to take lessons from Jetblue and Singapore airlines.

Instead of investing in LIAT the govt. should be investing in either a charter airline or a ferry. LIAT is a losing proposition.

  77. Justice and Truth
    August 26, 2013

This is shocking and the attitude of staff, saying that we already fed you. It makes me angry with LIAT.
LIAT treats passengers as second class people. Even then, no passengers should be treated in this manner. LIAT does not deserve to be in business. OUT WITH YOU LIAT!
What poor service on the part of LIAT and poor customer service of LIAT’s staff. This staff is not worthy of the position of C.S.
Is this treatment deliberate on the part of LIAT? Getting back at Dominicans for complaining about its poor service? Dominicans, keep complaining about LIAT’s poor service! Do not let up! Go viral with it.
I do think something should be done about this, not on the government’s level but to sue LIAT for an exorbitant sum of money, for the number of times flights have been late, causing passengers to be late as well and no doubt causing them to miss other flights and appointments.
LIAT YOU SHOULD BE SUED, once and for all!
Please permit me to further inform you that Canadian airlines and others, if late, more than four hours (more or less), will be charged $90,000. This is for the overall inconvenience to passengers. It is a new Law.
LIAT is overdoing it. SHAME ON YOU LIAT! A Court case should be looming for you.
New airline please, to give LIAT competition and put it out of business. Passengers have suffered enough.
I had discussed LIAT’s poor service with someone who informed me this has been ongoing for over 50 years!
LIAT! If you cannot measure up to rectifying your poor service, please get out of the business. You do not deserve to be in business. Everyone of you concerned deserve to be fired. You have projected your incompetency. You do not deserve to serve the public. You do not deserve to serve the public – passengers.

      • August 26, 2013

I’m not sure I’d call LIAT a major anything, other than a major pain in the neck. The other airline serving Dominica is Seaborne, which connects us to San Juan.

We The Authorities have no intention to build an International Airport in Dominica, so please stop wasting your time.

With an International Airport, Dominicans in the diaspora would be able to fly to Dominica to vote then return to their place of residence all in the same day. There is no way we could remain in power.

In the meantime, we will continue to support LIAT in any way possible. That’s what politics is all about.

    • Toomatoe Tomato
      August 26, 2013

If my memory serves me properly – who prevented the Americans from helping us build an International Airport in the time Of President Ronald Reagan and Prime Minister Eugenia Charles?

Anyway international airports fly planes nuh?

Aren’t we all now waiting in internationals airports? Therefore delays do occur at international airports who would have thought so.

Just thought a little soul searching and humor could help us relax as we await our flights. Think of sea and sand and beautiful Dominica as you wait. I do.

  83. The Authorities
    August 25, 2013

We the Authorities at LIAT are having difficulties and continue to ask the public to be patient.

Currently these Dominican passengers have no alternative but to wait for the next available LIAT flight. We fed them more than they expected, and they would be happy to spend the night in St Kitts on the newly painted airport benches.

Dominicans are used to horrible customer service at home, so we can assure you that we at LIAT are doing our best to make them feel at home.

I remember that first xmas vacation to Dominica. You all had me sleep in antigua, sent my bags to Dominica and had to nerve to tell me that the next avaialable flight was in two weeks. And your staff member insulted when i asked how Im I to remain in the same clothes all day by stating that i was nasty and should have washed my clothes overnight. God Knows where i would have done dat.

Well after the police was almost called in and a few of us got violent and disrespectful we were sent on our way to Dominica. Moving forward I paid American Airlines-Eagle extra $100+ to get where i was going. Now I will do the same with Seaborne and any other who comes around.
