Update: Lando cops six awards to win Carnival Queen title (See Photos)

2012 Miss Dominica, Nadira Lando

Nineteen year old beauty Nadira Lando from Bataca/Pointe Michel is the winner of the 2012 Miss Dominica competition.

She won that award from a field of six competitors at Carnival City at the Pottersville Savannah. Lando won six of the awards which were at stake on her way to capturing the title, including best talent and best evening wear.

Coming in as competitor number 3, Lando did a monologue about the history of the Caribs.

She went back briefly into the history of the Caribs (now called Kalinago), lamenting that they have been taken advantage of and have over the years been “fooled, disrespected, used and abused by people”.

Queen Nadira found it important to point out that today Caribs can no longer be fooled.

“Caribs are now VIP-Very important people and gone to the next level and walking to town. They are teachers, Doctors and more,” she said in her talent.

Ameka Cognet of Emshall came first runner up , with Kimberly Jno Charles of St. Joseph placing third.

The show was judged in the following categories:  costume creation, talent, swim wear and the questions and answers segment.

Lando wants to be a lawyer – she thinks becoming that kind of professional will allow her to help   “the weak and down trodden.”

    Goodday Ms. Pussina is just back from TnT. I made my stop to Dominica just for the queen and yet again Ms. Griffith Failed to listen to Ms. Pusina. I warn you, Dow say I didn’t. And why were they pronouncing your name as In-diania? Anyways it looks like she had a good team behind her including the talent being executed by Karmala I was looking at her from where I was can’t let the cat out the bag but Karmala was on eagde to make sure Ms. Griffith delivered a knock off of her 1998 talent with a different subject matter area. The Talent had potential but Ms. Griffith was all over the place hence her control of breath she was out of breath.

    Secondly it looks like Ms. Griffith watch a lot of Americia’s next Top model and copy the style of Ms.Jay. Puss love this is a pageant lord and stumping and lavway papa I was shaking my head cause she was extra extra extra I think if she had tone it down as one of the posters indicated she could have place. Hey look at it Ms. Griffith can as I told her look at the tape of her sister show and her show and come back a refined person next year. I warn you child. I’m an expert and what I do puss I make stars out of people.

    Anyways moving along.. Ameka Cognet was the underdog and did very well she reminded me of Ms. Paul in 2003 the only issue I had was the designs of her swimwear and evening wear if those two elements was of a more enhance standard with no doubt she would have been the winner. Kimberly Jno. Charles was exceptional. I think she walked the best in all runs had the body height and look as a queen and I think overall would have been the queen if a few of the judges didn’t have there bias as it relates to looks cause Ms. Lindo didn’t do a great job walking nor I don’t believe she deserved all the aways for the different runs.

    But I think this show was the poorest of them all it event beat 2004 which went down in the history of being the worst queenshow. I don’t think there was a clear cut winner so Ms.Lindo all the best puss and work on that walk you was bumping the whole night. Love you. But Ms. Griffith you was my queen but you didn’t listen.

    I wish to record well wishes and congratulations to the Carnival Queen of Dominica 2012 Ms. Nadira Lando. I was so excited by the news of your victory that I may have screamed for a whole minute.
    I take this time to encourage you to use this time and the opportunities that you will receive to advance yourself personally and also to bring some needed attention to certain needs and issues in our community.
    That being said, there are some people who have expressed concern over the performances in the question&answer segment. As a former participant in a pageant, I can advance in defense of these young ladies that its not that they cant speak or that they do not know what to say. The simple fact is the pressure and excitement of the evening and the desire to win. It seems like your brain starts to function right as you get off the stage.
    There are ways to combat this problem and it comes with experience and practice. So Ms. Lando, I have no doubt that you will continue to represent Dominica well and that you will bring home more titles in the coming year. My very best to you again and to all the other contestants. God bless Dominica!

    Lovely show. Enjoyed it! I think a big thank you should go out to the show organizers. That show was moving I tell you. Fantastic job all around! I do have to mention that in the future you guys coach some of those contestants to speak like ladies. I’m not sure what was going on with Indiana but she just too on a whole different personality and it was a bit scary. I thought her dress was great the walk wasn’t good. I’m not sure why this young lady find it necessary to be so vulgar in everything. walking, speaking, posing…..jissshhh tone it down…. but hey you’re not queen so i guess you’ll just do what makes you happy. Just remember whatever you do to today will come back in your many tomorrows…

    I think that if this pageant is supposed to show the inner and outer beauty of Dominican women, then they should look more natural.
    The amount of make-up these women are wearing is scary and it’s frightening to think that the young women who want to follow in their footsteps now attribute this to what beauty is.

    Congrats to this young lady but as someone who came to this show and witness it first hand I believe one young lady was done an injustice. Miss. Indiana Griffith from Goodwill should have received the awards for best in spectacular wear, best in swimwear and she could have even got best dress. This young lady was exceptional and should have at least placed first runner up. She was consistent, graceful, eloquent and confident. This sentiment is felt by a lot of people who attended the show. To Indiana I say this to you, keep your head held high. You were fantastic Miss. Griffith. You brought excitement to the show and In my book you will always be my Queen. They may not recognize you for your hard work but we take note of it. Well done chica. To Miss. Lando go out there and represent Dominica to the best of your ability.

    I am usually not one to criticize however, Nadira did not deserve all the awards she got. personally not one of these ladies deserved the crown last night so whoever got it i would be fine. Here’s my judgement, best spectacular creation-Miss Lavinier, Best Talent-Miss Cognet. Miss Lando cannot walk she bumped in every round so i don’t understand how she got best in for evening wear and swim wear. Anyways congrats and I do hope that Miss Lando will represent Dominica the best she can. Because she is Dominica and so are we. lol

      You’re right cause best in swimwear was Kimberly. Nadira’s needs to excercise and tone up her butt plus she was bumping all over that stage. I think Nadira did well, not spectacularly well but alright. If Kimberly had a better dress and anwered her questions a little better she could have one and made a beautiful queen.
