The United Workers Party (UWP) has called on Dominicans to turn out in large numbers on Friday, to protest against the nomination of House Speaker Alix Boyd-Knights for president of Dominica.
Newly-elected UWP political leader, Lennox Linton, announced on his radio talk show on Q95FM on Sunday, that a public meeting is planned for 5.00pm on Friday outside of the state house and parliament buildings on Victoria Street in Roseau.
However, Linton made it clear that the gathering was to be violence-free.
“The purpose of Friday afternoon’s meeting is not to engage in any violence or hostility to anybody at all. It is to peacefully assemble outside of the State palace and the parliament building on Victoria Street, for the purpose of indicating clearly to the government that the people of Dominica do not support this decision of making Alix Boyd-Knights the president,” he said.”There’ll be no cursing, there’ll be no harassment of people, there will be a peaceful show of dissent.”
Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, confirmed last week that his cabinet has taken the decision to nominate Boyd-Knights as head of state, replacing Eluid Williams, whose term expires in October. He said this was done after consultation with leader of the opposition, Hector John.
Linton immediately called for public protest against the decision.
“I am a citizen of the commonwealth of Dominica who is concerned, had been concerned and remains concerned about greater level of decency and civility in our public affairs and this is an assault on our hopes and dreams,” he said. “I think the people of Dominica have a duty now, a duty they cannot avoid, to go out and protest this atrocious decision by the prime minister and his cabinet’,”he told Q95FM’s Matt Peltier.
He believes that based on her track record as Speaker of the House, Boyd-Knights is not the best person for that job .
“She has been biased, she has been extremely unfair, she has been unjust and she has been hostile to the members of the opposition United Workers Party,” he noted.
Linton stated that the role of president requires an “even higher level of balance, fairness, justice” and requires an individual to be “above the political fray” which he said Boyd-Knights is “completely incapable” of.
Opposition leader Hector John last week wrote to Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit informing him that the party would not support Boyd-Knights as a nominee for president.
I was thinking that spaggs as Opposition Leader should be the one at the forefront of this issue as he holds the office directly involved in the nomination of the President. Lennox is not yet an elected member of Parliament but he is already showing total disregard to the office that is held by an elected member of Parliament Spaggs. I feel sad for poor spagss see how they pack him in the vice president position in UWP and appointing two non elected members to lead the UWP. What a slap in the face of bawie residents. UWP where is your nominee for President? all u guys worth is to stir up trouble present the nation with ur nominee and lets start a healthy debate.You CANNOT tell DLP who to nominate and no one can demand that the PM change his choice thats all up to him remember the mandate he was given by the people 18 to 3 and the authority he has in law.

Alix we are told fights for women’s right. However, I do not recall her protesting when Mrs. Emanuel was almost burnt to death Christmas morning 2010. I wonder if she agrees with those who believe and have declared that her husband burnt his own house. Where was her humanity then.
Don’t be surprised if people don’t show up to that protest meeting on Friday. A lot of people are afraid of victimization, the public servants, business men even the police officers are keeping quiet because after all they have there bills to pay and children to feed. I shall be there as long as I have life and health. Skerrit must understand that he cannot just do what he feels like as though Dominica is his father’s estate. Based on how this lady deals with the members of the opposition in the Parliament,she has not qualified herself to be president, a position that will call for the same or even more levelheadedness, non partisanship, non political,fairness and equity .

It is regularly said Dominicans do more talking then action. Since the news broke that Alix Knights is Skerrit’s choice for the Presidency, DNO and Q95 have been bombarded with comments and talk of dissatisfaction. The real action man Mr. Lennox Linton, the next Prime Minister of Dominic, has called for protest action. Now Dominicans must put their boots on the ground on Friday 13th at 5.00pm outside the President’s Palace. If this protest is unsuccessful, Dominicans better shut up and let Skerrit do as he wishes.

The controversy regarding the nomination of Alex- Boyd Knight as President is Political, it is not about her qualification or the appointment being unconstitutional.I laugh when I read comments regarding her allegiance to the Government.We must look at politics for what it is and not what politicians tells us.All the The Presidents who were chosen or appointed in our history were supporters of the Government some were not upfront or displayed their allegiance publicly but behind closed doors they knew why they were appointed.
Do we really think that a nominee of the opposition UWP will be appointed by the Government of course not,and if the UWP were in power they would do the same.As to what the constitution says, it is all formality regarding the person to be agreed upon by the Government and opposition. As I write this comment, president Obama is contemplating sending troops to Syria just to protect Americas’ interests. If we love our country, and I know most of us do, we should all turn out in large numbers to let those who do not care about our future and the future of our country, know in no uncertain terms that we are willing to preserve our country. This is not a call for just uwpites but for all DOMINICANS. I am calling on Freedomites, Labourites, Pappyites, UWPites, Christians, Adventists, Rasta Farians, and all those who love to play mass and jump up, to stand in defense of your country. After all, when it is all said and done, Mr. Skerrit can turn to either France or Canada (through marriage), Tony can even run to Florida, Antigua, or even Syria, and I’m quite sure Ms. Knight is not stock in Dominica. But the question is, if you stay there and do nothing to protect your country, can you afford to run for refuge? Where to? Dominica is ours to love and protect so lets protect our beautiful country that papa God blessed us with. I hope I will see the likes of Peter R. Those supporting Lennox who claim that he can speak, is that all it takes? One’s ability to orate is no proof that a country will be successfully managed under his or her leadership. Can Lennox eloquently discuss any topic presented to him? Other than accusations of corruption, can he articulate on issues such as child molestation, unemployment, poverty, domestic violence, crime reduction, management and so on? Is he coherent on any topic?

Bad move comrade Skerrit. That decision is effectively handing the Roseau Valley seat over to the UWP on a silver platter. This lady is largely the most unpopular person in high office in this country.
Not liked at all by her community and wider Roseau Valley constituency, you could just check with Dr. Mc and if he’s honest enough he’ll tell you that this move will potentially injure his chances of holding on to that seat.

To the extent that he likened her behaviour to that of the ANTI-CHRIST (he made those remarks ab at a church in Paix Bouche for sure). We the people of faith who pride in our freedom of worship to a sovereign God cannot accept your nomination of Alix Boyd-Knight for president in the Commonwealth of DOMINICA.
