UWP charges a scare tactic – John

Hector John

Opposition leader Hector John says police claims that he and seven other members of his United Workers Party (UWP) have been charged for violation of the Public Order Act, is an attempt to scare the opposition.

Deputy police chief Cyril Carrette disclosed on DBS Radio last week, that police have charged eight UWP members after they protested outside Parliament on November 29, 2010. Carrette said the action was against the Public Order Act and that those charged will have to appear in court in June this year for trial.

But John says no member of the UWP has been notified of the development and that they only found out about the charge on radio.

“We haven’t had any documents in our hand saying that,” he stated.

He said the UWP has been speaking out on the status of democracy in Dominica, and “I think what is being done through Mr Carrette, unfortunately, is that the government is trying to scare the opposition.”

The Opposition leader is adamant that he and members of the UWP were not breaking the law when they protested.

“We assembled outside the house of parliament and no constitution was breached. There were police officers guiding us right in the area. They were ensuring that we had a peaceful activity,” John underscored.

The matter surrounding the charging of UWP members surfaced last Wednesday.

Some NOTABLE QUOTES For the EDUCATION of MY FELLOW MEN AND WOMEN

But if thought is to become the possession of many, not the privilege of the few, we must have done with fear. It is fear that holds men back — fear lest their cherished beliefs should prove delusions, fear lest the institutions by which they live should prove harmful, fear lest they themselves should prove less worthy of respect than they have supposed themselves to be.
~ Bertrand Russell (Principles of Social Reconstruction)

You assist an evil system most effectively by obeying its orders and decrees. An evil system never deserves such allegiance. Allegiance to it means partaking of the evil. A good person will resist an evil system with his or her whole soul.
    ~ Mahatma Gandhi

The voice of protest, of warning, of appeal is never more needed than when the clamor of fife and drum, echoed by the press and too often by the pulpit, is bidding all men fall in and keep step and obey in silence the tyrannous word of command. Then, more than ever, it is the duty of the good citizen not to be silent.
    ~ Charles Eliot Norton

On the day of PEACEFUL ASSEMBLY by Dominicans there was a police presence, including Police INSPECTORS who assisted people there to keep the PEACE. The Police never told anyone that the ASSEMBLY was illegal and that they should vacate the place. They were present and found that everyone was PEACEFUL. The people were exercising their CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS to PEACEFUL ASSEMBLY. THERE WAS NOTHING ILLEGAL or against the Law about that? So if at the time Police Inspectors found nothing WRONG why now Cyrille Carrette, Ag. Commissioner vilifying the opposition and talking of charges?

Carrette is indirectly admonishing his own Police Officers for allowing the PEACEFUL ASSEMBLY to go on, since he now concludes that the ASSEMBLY was against the Law. Why is the Ag. Chief of Police behaving so irresponsibly? Why is he and the political directorate doing things that would anger people and cause more and more division and eventually unnecessary chaos?

Mr. Carrette explain to us Dominicans WHY are you acting so FOOLISHLY without a CONSCIENCE? Why are you treating your own people in that way? Why would you do those things simply to please a FEW of your political friends?

Dominicans, THINK OF IT? If the police sees a thief stealing from someone’s business place does he just stand there and allow the thief to go away with the person’s goods, then 2 months after place charges on that thief? It is so ILLOGICAL. Dominicans no longer FEAR to express their views on issues that affect their daily lives. No where in the world would people, being faced with a declining standard of living, increased crimes, increased corruption by those in Public Office, an illegal leader of the country who has been found LYING on several occasions BIG TIME, a judicial system heavily influenced by those in POWER, increased unemployment and just sit or stand there and say or do nothing about it?

PEACEFUL ASSEMBLY is our RIGHT. The Universal Declaration of HUMAN RIGHTS as well as our CONSTITUTION gives people that RIGHT to vent their feelings in a PEACEFUL manner. So Dominicans FEAR NO MORE.

FEAR NO MORE my people. There are more corrupt and criminal activities taking place in our country that goes unnoticed and untouched. Now it is the TRUCKERS who are WRONG for demanding that they must also be given the opportunity to pay their bills and put food on their table. You want to Charge them. You want to charge the people of Layou for speaking against poisonous FUMES, CANCEROUS FUMES affecting their HEALTH. It is not Gardakhan who is the problem, but Layou residents and the Truckers. Is so Dominica come?

That is not a case where Skerrit and Carrete are trying to intimidate the UWP, but one where they are threatening to take our freedom and democracy from all of us. Carrete is definitely not acting like a proffessional and is bringing shame and disgrace to Dominicans, his friends, and family. What a shame to see how two heads are behaving!

THIS IS THE MOST REDICULOUS OF CHARGES THAT HAS EVER GONE THROUGH OUR COURT SYSTEM IN DOMINICA.

THESE CHARGES WERE WELL THOUGT OF BY THE LABOUT PARTY AND TONY THE MAN OF MASS CONFUSSION!! THE REASON BEHIND THEM ARE OF MANY FOLDS BUT I WILL JUST PUT A FEW ON PAPER.

    1) TO ELEMINATED ANY VIABLE OPPOSTION.

    2) BY CHARGING THESE UWP MEMEBRS AND IF THEY ARE FOUND GUILTY (JUST AS SKERRIT WILL BE FOUND GUILTY SOON ENOUGH) THEY WON’T BE ABLE TO CONTEST ANY ELECTION WITH A CRIMINAL RECORD.

    3) A FEAR TATIC TO IMTIMIDATED ANY OTHER DOMINICAN WHO WANT TO RIGHTFULLY EXPRESS THEIR RIGHT TO DEMONSTRATE AGAINST THIS ILLEGAL REGIME.

I COULD GO ON AND ON BUT IT MAKES ME SICK TO THE STOMACH WHEN HEAR THE COMM. OF POLICE STOOP SO LOW AND REPEAT THESE TRUMP UP CHARGES.I AM CALLING ON ALL DOMINIANS TO NOT BE AFRAID OF THESE ACTIONS BY THE POLICEMEN IN POLITICS AND TO CONTINUE TO STNAD UP FOR YOUR RIGHTS. IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN TAUGHT THAT ONE CANNOT BE AN EFFECTIVE POLICE OFFICER AND AT THE SAME TIME BE INVOVLED IN POLITICS AND POLITICS IN THE POLICE FORCE IS AT AN ALL TIME HIGH. BUT, STILL THERE ARE DECENT POLICE OFFICERS IN THE FORCE TODAY AND I APPLAUD THEM FOR MAINTAINING THEIR INTEGRITY.

IT SEEMS LIKE IS WRONG THAT IS RIGHT AND NOT RIGHT THAT IS RIGHT.

Shame on Carrette. He announced to the WORLD on BBC Caribbean that he had charged these guys, the date of the hearing, and the HUGE fines and LONG prison sentences they face. When he Carrette was Ordered by a Chief Magistrate to arrest a certain lawyer close to Skerrit Carrete said NOTHING. There was no announcement for 41 criminal charges. SHAME on Carrete.

    • Truth B Told
      February 8, 2011

Get your facts straight – the DPP and the police agreed that there was no basis for the supposed “41 criminal charges”. The case between the elderly “possibly senile” lawyer and his energetic protégé is a civil matter and will be dealt with accordingly.

The law of DA must be up held. If anyone brakes the law they must be brought before the court to answer his /her name.

The court of law will make a decision as to if anyone is guilty. If the person is not happy there, they can appeal to the OECS COURTS.

When people like Angelo,Linton and Mat talk they must give the full facts about a matter.

No one freedoom has being cut or affected. The police does not have the courts in its pocket.

I think smart thinking DA people should just wait for a court decision base on the evidence.

The problem is the big mouth of Angelo,Linton and Mat are just jumping the gun. Plus there are people out there that just want to call radio show for the 1 to 5 minutes of air time.

WAT IS GOING ON IN DOMINICA
THE CHIEF OF POLICE IS THE BIGGEST DUMMY IN
DOMINICA WHY HE HAD TO STAY THREE MONTH
TO CHARGE THE PROTESTERS THAT THEY HAD
NO PERMIT TO PORTEST IF THE BREAK THE LAWS
THEY SHOULD BE CHARGE FORTHWITH WHY STAY
FOR THREE MONTH TO FORMALLY CHARGE THEM
IS BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO CASE, AND IT WAS A PEACEFUL
      PROTEST.
I DO BELIVED THAT ITSTIME FOR CARRETT TO GO
HE IS ONE OF THE POPPET BOYS.

AS I SEE IT THE CHIEF OF POLICE SHOULE BE BETWEEN
EVOYNNE ALEXANDER OR DUCK SAVARIN ONE FOR COMMISSIONER
      AND THE OTHER DEPUTY.
