UWP marches for “free and fair election”

A number of United Workers Party (UWP) supporters from all walks of life braved the weather on Saturday and rallied in the streets of Roseau to support the party’s march for free and fair elections.

The march began at the Newtown Savannah at 3:00 pm and culminated at the Pottersville Savannah.

UWP leader, Lennox Linton who was addressing a crowd at Pottersville, said the movement for free and fair elections in Dominica is a “very solid move.”

He said also that there has been no word from the Electoral Commission on that matter since the December 8th election date was announced.

“The movement for free and fair elections in Dominica is a very solid move. It is not just about elections, it’s about free and fair elections,” Linton said. “Elections that have integrity, elections that are honest, elections that are fair, elections that are not manipulated by people who know that they are going to lose and because they have power and because they have money they can buy the elections.”

According to Linton, the December 8th election is not for sale. “Your vote is not for sale, any attempts to try to steal it is going to meet with the stiffest resistance,” he said.

Linton said the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) of trying to steal the election in many different ways.

“This Labour Party government is once again insisting that it is going to break the laws of Dominica and import Dominicans living overseas to some to vote in the elections,” he noted. “We have heard today that 50 people in St Maarten are prepared to come to vote in St Joseph. They have received their tickets.”

He warned Dominicans to take a stand for the country.

“Dominicans must decide what we want for our country,” he sad. “Its not an election that is decided based on illegal behavior and irregular conduct, so they are trying to bribe people to bring them in to vote.”

Linton stated further that, leaders and citizens alike must abide by the laws of Dominica.

“We have laws that tells us what we can do and what we cannot do during election time, we are a country of law, we are a law abiding people and therefore our political parties must also abide by the laws whether they are in government or in opposition,” he stated. “They have refused to clean the list and insisted that there will be still dead people on the list and they are also insisting that the people who have not lived in Dominica for more than five years who’s names should be removed from the register, they are leaving those names on the register, so they are preparing the way for other people vote as themselves and come back and vote as somebody else.”

Linton believes that the DLP plans to steal the elections by bribing the citizens of Dominica.

“Another way they want to steal the elections is bribing citizens of Domiinica,” he said. “over the past few months, they have been going around, they have been giving you materials, nowadays they are coming around, they may have flat screen TV for you, they may have tablets, they may have laptop computers,” he said.

“Everyone has the right to take part in the government of his country, directly or through freely chosen representatives… The will of the people shall be the basis of the authority of government; this will shall be expressed in periodic and genuine elections which shall be by universal and equal suffrage and shall be held by secret vote or by equivalent free voting procedures.”
Article 21, Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 1948. The last I checked, we have free and fair elections.

Linton should stop the nonsensical argument of “free and fair elections.” He is trying to make it seem that the elections will be manipulated. The people will go to the poles and vote for the Government that they want and feel will further advance the Country. Whether they choose the “Team Dominica”/UWP or the DLP, then it will be the will/voice of the majority. No one is going to steal the elections; not the DLP nor the UWP. While it is true that we need election reform and laws amended from our colonial separation, every government could have championed election reform at some point in Dominica. The DFP, the UWP and then most recently the DLP. Why was it not done? Maybe because it either benefited each party at the time to keep it as is, (What is good for the Goose, must be good for the Gander) or that there was/is nothing wrong with the system. I only recall the UWP asking for election reform after they lost an election.

“This Labour Party government is once again insisting that it is going to break the laws of Dominica and import Dominicans living overseas to some to vote in the elections,” he noted.

“He warned Dominicans to take a stand for the country”. what exactly does he mean by that statement? I caution every Dominican to allow a peaceful election campaign season up to and well beyond polling day. Do not by any means be incited by any political party or politicians, whether RED or BLUE, to cause harm to your neighbor for the quest of power from a few men.

Let the election process run its course. “Where democratic institutions are weak, elections are easily used by political groups to manipulate the will of the people and seize control of the government. For democracy to work, everyone must agree to accept the results of freely held elections.” Whatever the results may be, I urge my fellow Dominicans to “Love your neighbor as yourself, and to be your brothers keeper.”

    One Love Dominicans!!!

The elections are always free and fair. What UWP doesn’t seem to realize is that people don’t want to vote for them. You lost 18-3 not because of a corrupt election its because Dominicans did not want you in government. Just face facts and stop talking nonsense. This year without a proper leader and a talk show host to replace him its going to be even worse. December 8th blue tears have to cry in Dominica.

Dominicans living overseas, stop distorting things.Any Dominican living overseas, WHO IS REGISTERED TO VOTE, can vote. However, those who wish to do so, must PURCHASE THEIR TICKETS WITH MONEY THAT THEY WORKED FOR. Accepting tickets from a political party to come and vote is BRIBERY, and that’s ILLEGAL.
Friends, countrymen, if you sooo want to vote Labour, why don’t you stay in Dominica after you have voted and experience the hard times that Dominicans have to deal with under that Labour party government? Just spend a few months and you will find out. Why don’t you just give up your jobs wherever you are and come back home.
I dare you to do that.

It is unfair for you all to come, vote, and take off.
If Skerrit had done enough for Dominica in the 10 years that he has been at the helm, why is he bent on paying you all to come and vote for him? Think about it.
Some of you can’t afford to buy a ticket to visit your relatives so you wait every FIVE years for a free ticket.
Shame on you!!!!! Let your conscience be your guide.

Why are Dominicans so bias ? Time to look at things with an open mind. If a party in power for 15 years ,and they are struggling to accomplish their goals , do you think in another 5 years they will accomplish it. Maybe someone else with a different approach may be able to have new ideas. I think it’s time to give another captain a chance to row the boat.

What will Linton not state to do his utmost to tarnish DLP’s good name?
Linton, your innuendos were unnecessary. Concentrate on your business and allow DLP to concentrate on theirs. Stop lying. This is no way to want to win an election. You ensure you conduct a fair election, free of obstructions and violence in words and action. Adhere to the Election Code of Conduct.

  17. Free and Fair
    November 17, 2014

Skerritt and his DLP Party say NO TO ELECTORAL REFORMS longtime No to FREE and FAIR elections. Plain to see. Classic dictatorship trends.

Remember: The famous E-mail sent to Skerritt by his Lawyer Tony? It indicated that is Madness the “Independent” Electoral Commission is trying, to recommend reforms, production of VOTER ID Cards and to CLEAN the bloated Voters; List.

Just think of that. 65000 names to vote on a voters’ list out of a population of 69000? Something not wrong? Dead people names still on that list. Those not illegible to vote according to the electoral laws, their names on the list. So is that List clean?

But Skeritt and his Govt. will not assist the Commission to Clean it. The Commission itself do not care two hoots. Ineffective. It has not ensured Free and fair elections. why? Its recommendations for electoral reforms has not been fulfilled.

Not even the NID cards, it was forced by Govt. to produce could be done for elections 2014. No force to have those good recommendations carried out? Whose fools are we?

The patriots again are warning people of Dominica of the dictatorship moves of that cabal. Many do not listen. Time will tell.

Corruption and corrupt politicians will not entertain or assist any move for free and fair elections. Electoral reforms are against such people’s interest. The proof of the pudding, is in the eating.

The Commission has lost its Independence long time. The Commission has allowed itself to be heavily influenced by political operatives.

The Commission, as well as the OAS, and CARICOM recommended reforms, Voter ID Cards and to clean the “Dirty” Voters’ List. Up to now Nothing. In fact, the Commission was forced to start to produce a Multi-purpose ID cards, which is not what it wanted. It wanted and asked for funds for Voter ID Cards. Where are the NID cards? No ID for elections in 2014? No reforms. take it or leave it.

Stubborn. No reforms. All over the world people are clamouring for Free and Fair elections. For a better democratic way of life. Why not Dominica? What is that stealing, cheating of elections about?

The Commission, Skeriitt and DLP Govt. did not tell us the truth. They boasted all along the NID cards would be ready for elections. AWA !!! All of a sudden, breaking news the other day, NO NID Cards. But they ready for election. No re-registration/cleaning of the Voters’ list like Antigua did recently.

Conclusion. As a result of not fixing a system, an electoral system, open for fraud, irregularities, or cheating, says alot. All of us know that spokes are being put into the wheels of Free and Fair elections.

To all the Ignorant asses in Dominica and elsewhere who are of the same view, Many people have lost their lives for the right to vote and none of you can prevent a citizen to vote in their country no matter where they live and how long they have been away as long as they are resisted to exercise their GOD given right .

Give that argument up Lennon x and company , We are Dominicans just like every one of you , the only difference is that we in the Diaspora are better Dominican citizens than most of you in Dominica ! do you know why; We help assist in many areas of development and you Lennox yo cannot say the same.

To make you wise, those who are working in Canada are not illegals. If they are, they must get express permission from the Immigration Officer which they must apply for. Today, this system is such that illegals cannot work in Canada. If caught they will be arrested and could be deported. The government has tightened immigration.

You sound like an uneducated Eskimo. Thanks for your contribution to Dominica but don’t be that blinded that you forget the country have laws. No one said you cannot vote if you abide by the laws. Each country have laws. In Canada if you drive and talk on the phone without a handsfree head set your vehicle can be seized and you can go to jail. In Dominica, NO problem! That did not mean you did not contribute to the car industry in Canada. Its the law and if u brake it you pay.
Similar for those in the US, you cannot live in USVI and want to vote in Federal Elections. To vote you have to come and live on mainland, but they are citizens though.
Dominica no difference, you have to live in the country for at least 6 months before elections. You cannot be out of the country longer that 5 years, DON’T pay your own passage, don’t know how the folks live for the last 5 years but must decide for them if they should have salt water for breakfast or breadfruit for dinner, then you take the next flight out and don’t care about their high blood pressure or high carbohydrate diet. That is wrong!! No one make that decision for you when you come from your cold hard days work. Stay Canada and vote. You have NDP, Liberal Party and the Conservative. I wonder if you know their philosophy and what each one stand for? Boss pay your passage and come vote but don’t brake our laws cause you don’t brake the white man laws in the great north.

  25. Just Observing
    November 17, 2014

Mr. Linton, when the UWP swept every other party aside in the 1990 and 1995 general elections, you did not have any concerns. The UWP came as a high spending political outfit. They were the first to usher billboards with life size images of its leaders and candidates. They were the first to pay to bring in people from the diaspora to vote. Where is the beef Lennox.

The UWP was in government. They never saw the need for electoral reform except a failed attempt at “jerry-mandeering the constituency boundaries”. Remember it was Urban Baron that stopped them in their tract? Baron complained that the UWPO was trying to make his small constituency even smaller by removing Pichelin and Bellevue Chopin from the Petite savanne Constituency and linking it with an already mega size Grand Bay. the intention then was to make Petitie Savanne smaller in the hope that with a smaller constituency, it would have been easier for their candidate at the time, Giselle Francis to win it over Urban Baron. See how things work. Urban Baron is now wishing that he did not challenge that move. He is now running in the same constituency for the UWP. He now have to face the twin villages of Pichelin and Bellevue Chopin, two villages that see only red, red, red, redie when it comes to elections.

So for Linton to come talk today of electoral reform , he must know that his party’s history in this regard is far from admirable. Some time ago he and his party did say, no electoral reform, no election and placed the blame for lack of electoral reform squarely at the feet of Pm Skerrit. More recently he twisted his tongue around and said that parties are not responsible for electoral reform. The Electoral Commission is so responsible. When did he get enlightened? He did not say. He says he see dead people voting. In our present system? Try something else Lennox.

    • 4u2c
      November 18, 2014

Boss, my dead mother is on the list so yes, dead people are voting.
This world is dynamic and not static. If after 15 years you don’t see a need for change and reform then those who don’t see the need for that their brain has come to a stand still – fossil!
If UWP did wrong before and we know it was wrong it cannot be right now if we still know that is wrong. What people we become when we know wrong but up hold wrong as right because now its someone else doing it. Wrong we should condemn it no matter who doing it or else it will come under our bed and meet us when we least expect it!
Time for CHANGE! Don’t kill the messenger, pay attention to the message.

Is today a holiday in Dominica? If the rally was at 3:00PM? Or was it yesterday Sunday. Hope the UWP did not get people to leave their place of work and rob their employer of work time ’cause the UWP tells us in the above article that they are all about laws. lol.

Glad for your comment since the UWP keeps saying that Dominica is not a democratic country. They went as far as saying recently that Calypsonians we’re not free to sing openly. Thanks again for reminding us that Dominica is still a democratic country.

“According to Linton, the December 8th election is not for sale. “Your vote is not for sale, any attempts to try to steal it is going to meet with the stiffest resistance,” he said.” Risistance from whom? I do hope that Mr. Linton and company will be prepared for the resistance they will get if they try to prevent people who are registered to vote from voting.

From stating tha DLP giving out flat screens to they may have a flat screen for, just speaks to the level of political propaganda that is taking place. Every election one hears these charges mostly against the party in power. In 2000 it was the UWP that was accused of handing out money and building materials in order to buy votes. True or false this is part of our politics.

I must say… the bible defines sin as having the knowledge of sin and still committing sins. Before Eve ate the apple their was no knowledge of sin… now we know. Living in DA, hearing the gossip yet ascertaining the facts its obvious voting UWP is a sin… don’t be a sinner VOTE LABOUR!

Again you are seeing visions, Your insinuation is unfounded, your innuendos cannot stand, it was posted by your STT contact. I am just reminding you part of your St. Martin tour a young lady embarrass you, she was from St. Joe. Mr. Linton who did you give us in St. Joe? How can you shrub a person who isn’t from St. Joe, locate her there to suit you and think we will accept that. We also have our pride. The candidate you have given us is too much of a controversial figure. Did you just lunch anybody who support your party. We do no want our daughters and grand daughters to mimic such behavior. You could have done better than to throw such an individual in our faces. Character counts. Don’t blame St. Joe people if you loose.

Linton here we go again!!! Every time you open your mouth I’m scared of what you’re going to say and you’ve done it again!! You’re accusing people of bribery. This is a very serious allegation!!! Stick to policy and what you’re planning to do! Pound the pavement and canvass for your votes!!! Deal with the issue at hand. Being Prime Minister is a really responsible position and you can’t behave like this – shooting from the hip with blanks. Chances are that you’ll get hit!! Many people would worry about taking you seriously as you’re not strong, sharp or politically mature enough for such a responsible role. Perhaps you shouldn’t say much more. Get a spokesman.
