VIDEO: Independence comes to Dominica

As we celebrate our 40th Anniversary of Independence and consider how far we’ve come during those forty years, DNO invites you to watch the video below which takes us back to where it all started.

So 40 years ,no international airport. What kind of politicians we have ?
And what kind of independence we have when we still depend on neighboring islands to get to Dominica .
And you people so proud on Independence Day .
    Shame on you .
Fools paradise friend . Wake up people . We are far behind the rest . Proud fools.

”The only thing the island can be grateful for is the weather,” according to the narrator. Go figure. Even the weather can be unfavourable.

A grave error by well-meaning, short-sighted local political leaders….”small country with limited resources”… indeed; still small and with limited resources well into the 21st century.

These guys should have taken our chances and remain with the Brits.

The Brits decided to pull out because it was not profitable for them.

It more feels like independence is LEAVING Domininica as Domininica is getting deeper and deeper in China’s back pocket. If Skerrit remains as PM in the next 5-10 years, Domininica will be a colony of Communist China, mark my words. The land Skerrit said he is buying in the Wesley/ Woodford Hill area my people is for the Chinese. He has people believing is for international airport, though he doesn’t know if where he going to build it. My people, Skerrit buying all you land to give to the Chinese, who own him. I warning all you people!

If this commentator was to return to make another documentary on the island I am almost certain that the remarks would be the same after 40 years. I am sorry but the video only saddens me. 40 years and we have not gotten anything done. the country even looked happier then.

I have to agree. Everything since has been downhill because the British pulled out their resources and there were opportunists that came in and further disrupted the country.

It’s still insulting that Princess Margaret showed up dripping in diamonds to a poverty stricken island for our ceremony.
She then spoke of Christopher Columbus and all the Europeans that raped our island and never mentioned the Natives that were slaughtered or those that truly ‘discovered’ our great nation.
They, the Brits, then saddled us with debts that we will never be able to pay back which continues the IMF/World Bank grift.

“those that truly ‘discovered’ our great nation.”

      @World’s Moistest Jheri Curl,

Dominica, or the whole of the Caribean for that matter, could never become a great Nation, without Christopher Columbus, even if there might have been someone else before him That is why Christopher Columbus called us the “New World”

Yes, he found inhabitants there, but they were not civilized, history should tell you about this. Any discovery will come into the light –to become known to outsiders–even up to today, 525 years later most of all outsiders do not know anything about Dominica. How can you say that there are those that truly discovered Dominica? The Caribs and Arawaks did not discover Dominica they were discovered within her.
