[VIDEO] Prime Minister Skerrit to UN General Assembly: “Eden is broken”

In words ripe with emotion lamenting that “Eden is broken”, Dominca’s Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit addressed the UN General Assembly this morning, seemingly intent on drawing the world’s attention to  current conditions in Dominica in what he described as a landscape resembling a war zone.

The image he evoked was in direct support of his plea to fellow world leaders to assist the hurricane-ravaged island by lending the rebuilding equipment which would otherwise remain untouched “waiting for a war” and which is so desperately needed for the work of rebuilding the country. Roosevelt asserted that Dominica is indeed that war, to the applause of the floor.

Skerrit stated that Dominica needs : “water, food, emergency shelter, roads, bridges…” In effect , a complete rebuilding of the nation which has been reduced to its knees in the wake of the category 5 storm which hit the island in the late hours of  Monday September 18, is now necessary. The plan according to the PM is not to rebuild “as it was” but in  a manner which enables the island to bear rising sea levels and other destructive phenomena resulting from the increased hurricane activity in the region.

Pointing directly to the causal factors, Skerrit  addressed the much-debated issue of Climate Change in the world. Stating that to deny Climate Change is to deny the lives of thousands being sunk to the bottom; declaring that in the Caribbean “…we did not start this war against nature…we did not provoke it.”

As he implored the international community to make a stand, the Prime Minister said that today we in the small nations of the world need to know “who has our backs.” Citing the example of the United Arab Emirates who has risen to the challenge by espousing a theme of  increased giving, Skerrit asked his colleagues to follow the lead of the UAE.  He asserted that much more must be done to assist the countries who bear the impact of climate change.

In light of  the destroyed livelihood of the country and the resulting inability of the government to implement the planned  National Vulnerability Risk and Resilience Fund,  Skerrit contended that more funds must be made available for suffering nations. Additionally , he asserted that the World Bank must use already committed monies from the Green Climate Fund to provide aid to the devastated countries in the Caribbean.

Chiding the international community, the Prime Minister spoke sternly, saying : “Inaction and even inadequate action destroys life.”  In the final moments of his speech, he beseeched his colleagues to let the extraordinary event which we are all bearing witness to, spark a thousand points of light. Promising that Dominicans and other Caribbean Nationals will play their part, reminding the world that “Dominicans are strong and Caribbean people are resilient.”

It was a terrible storm, onece in a lifetime BUT it hasn’t been proved to be caused by larger countries carbon emissions. Storms happen, they always have and they always will. I don’t like that he is putting the blame and the burden of financing reconstruction on other countries. Catastrophes like this should be budgeted for and also insured against, he should be pushing for some sort of an insurance fund that island nations can pay into to cover reconstruction costs. He should also be talking about raising building standards so such wide spread devestation of buildings and infrastructure doesn’t happen again, but instead he comes with blame and his hand out. Do you think that the money is given for free?? Whoever gives Dominica money will want some of the island or influence back as payment.

Ryan, This PM knows nothing of accountability, budgeting & preparedness etc, but good at hopping on plane every other day at the expense of our limited funds. Our villages are poor, in poverty, deprived of any growth and sustainability development. This Labour government lacks foresight & are very lazy in foresight planning, just applying fast foot obesity programme. The reason why this PM & his political cronies must go. Ryan, you said: “Catastrophes like this should be budgeted for and also insured against, he should be pushing for some sort of an insurance fund that island nations can pay into to cover reconstruction costs.” You see, Skerrit and his visionless; corrupt Labour government are not at this level. They know nothing of good governance, accountability and transparency. They are masters of destroying our Dominica and they are ok, while our poor people are no longer in agriculture as these political Labour puppets travel the globe selling our passports for big money…

I heard that the PM made mention (in his UN speech) of “climate change and global warming.” These are being studies by scientists through-out the world and there seem to be some correlation to that argument. However, we have a responsibility to preserve the environment where we live. We cannot and should not blame every disaster on “global warming and climate change” when in fact and in truth we neglect our own backyard.

When we have people on the tiny Island of Dominica breaking our mountains to make aggregate stones and other concrete building material, what do we expect to happen in times of storms and hurricanes? These people like Parris William & Sons and such like, which are engaged on a daily basis for the past 35 years, breaking down mountains with explosives and dynamites do not care about the dangerous and catastrophic effects they are willfully causing. They are causing great harm to our country. Will the PM put a stop to that? Will the “environmentalist” in…

Will the “environmentalist in Roseau raise this concern? We are experiencing landslides and flooding like never before and the breaking down of these mountains are the results. Go online, people, and read of the effects caused by breaking down mountains. Look up ” MOUNTAIN TOP REMOVAL” and demand that these dangerous practices be stopped. The world is familiar with the term “global warming” and “climate change,” but they have no idear of the disregard we show to the environment where we live. People can’t be fool all the time. We know for sure, that our government by no regards to the environment and the safety of our people. We demand that our mountains be not tampered with.

DNO Admin – great job, keep on blocking my posts and kissing the butts of those who are responsible for this appalling event. In the end this will get you exactly nothing, just a continuation of the same resilient attack on the human race by the servants of the serpent using the hoax of climate change to fool the foolable and by gum, there are many of those on the islands. Too many! Just in case you decide to publish my post. This is the greatest opportunity for Dominicans to come together as one unit, united with one purpose to collectively restore Dominica to a ‘livable’ place again, where petty political differences would rarely raise its ugly head. The PM, Mr. Linton and their supporters should bury the political hatchet and replace it with servant leadership, genuine unity of purpose, selflessness, bona fide patriotism and an enduring love and respect for one another. This is not the time for political jostling, this is a time for a new paradigm.

We are all familiar with this, Who Jah Bless, no man curse. Sorry to say if the Prime Minister was blessed, we would have never have gone through this disaster. Folks Erica was just a warning, this is the real deal. I have been on the ground, People this is not any ordinary disaster. There is crying desolation, and gnashing of teeth. The core wrong that we have done in this nation was we have blasphemed God, we have worshiped the PM. Do you all remember the statement by the PM when said one can come to him and not God. It was said in a joke but it was serious statement. We need God we need prayers. Our PM needs to humble himself and accept his wrongs, God is a merciful God. Dominica can rise again with God first and foremost.

Thou shall not steal and abuse state and poor people`s resources, must not call our God`s name in vain. The wrath of this mans evil upon Dominicans and Dominica is so revealing and hurtful. July, we who live in America, saw Roosevelt stood in a room filled with empty chairs reading a piece of paper. There were no significant world nation listening to Roosevelt, except a few third worlds nations.

There were no United States representative there: If you think Lennox could not have done better; ask Skerrit to define what he term building equipment stored away waiting for war!

Let me show you how stupid is his comment. It is not as if there is no war; as far as I can count there are at least seven wars being fought this very day; but just to name there; there are wars in Afghanistan; Syria; Iraq and elsewhere. So I would imagine those building equipment cannot be used any other place except in Skerrit’s Dominica!

When he should try and be humble in order to get some help he went out critiquing the very nations like the U.S. who can, how dumb can a man get?

Now you are not able to compare Hon Linton with Inept Skerrit. Skerrit is a failure and Hon Linton has exposed his corruption, even the CBI corruption – that Skerrit has to live with for the rest of his life. Skerrit is yet to account for the Bin Bobol and the Fertilizer Bobol and time will tell when the state summons him to court to answer all these unsavoury Bobol activities. He wont go to parliament to account, so we will take him to court.

This was a wasted opportunity by Skerritt to get much needed assistance from the UN for a country damaged and battered.Eden is broken, how many people can relate to this in regards to a country and it’s people in misery.Let me tell you what I would have done.I would have made a presentation with videos and slides and the voices of real suffering people begging for help. This would tug at the heart strings of those who are in a position to assist us rather than poetry and ideology.Dominica would get assistance wether or not Skerritt addressed the UN or not because the news outlets have carried the story, but it would have been more impactful if the presentation touched those who can usually give assistance to Dominica’s and others who can be swayed to add to the contributions.Looks like Skerritt went to project himself not his suffering people

” lending the rebuilding equipment which would otherwise remain untouched “waiting for a war” and which is so desperately needed for the work of rebuilding the country. ”

Is Skerrit out of his mind; so much so that he is reading from a script not understanding what was written by someone and given to him to make a fool of himself. It is a good thing he was reading that crap to a room filled with empty chairs in the UN building!

What is Roosevelt definition of “rebuilding equipment?” Is he talking about money to rebuild the country?

Are you people serious. The country is devastated, human beings are suffering and you are making petty philosophilical and underhanded comments (profet of doom). Move to action to make a real contribution. This is a time to give help not negativity. The town hall meeting that followed this UN address was even more helpful to Dominicans in the US seeking answers.
Did you loose anyone in the hurricane, wrong wrong? Perhaps if you had you would have wanted to hear from the PM himself about what’s happening to the nation and your village. I was touched that he came personally to make this statement at the UN and to seek help from the diaspora along with give much needed assurance.

Megzo, thank you for pointing the way forward. You are so right, this is a time when the commmunity needs to come together, not a time to use disaster as a tool just to influence a political ideal. Every action Skerrit has taken since the hurricane has been directed towards highlighting the plight of Dominica in order to attain help and financial aid.
I am only a descendant of Dominican parents, but the PMs words have been a balm to me that have also been a clarion call to action. For me his political ambitions have been eclipsed by his determination to help Dominica. It’s time for Dominicans, descendants, friends and allies to put away their gripes and moans and to ask “what can we do to help”, because Dominica needs you now. So put away your words of harm and show where your heart and commitment really are. Help, don’t hinder.

It’s time for Dominicans, descendants, friends and allies to put away their gripes and moans and to ask “what can we do to help”, The answer is, for us to move forward in development, we have to get rid of this immature Skerrit and his corrupt Labour Government. Before Hurricane Erica and Maria Hurricane Skerrit exists and that danger and insult still looms over the forests and valleys of Dominica. It is a shame that after 17 years in government Dominica is still in a mess and not even prepared to cope with a hurricane.

Interestingly, when PM conducted the interview with ABS radio, three days after Maria, where he shed some tears, he said when people told him they were homeless he told them he too was homeless and he also said that he had landed in some communities. However, very interestingly he did not mention his home village of Vielle case, where he has his mansion, and where many believe was the first place he landed and made a mansion stop. Up to today many villagers of Vielle case and Penville know nothing about their people because I have heard many of them calling TDN / Q95 to find out about their village. By now we should all know that 97% of homes in both villages are lost their roof but Pm’s mansion is relatively safe. After Harvey devastated Houston many criticized pastor Joel Austin for not making his church auditorium available so homeless people their could have a place to shelter. But shouldn’t the same question be asked about PM’s mansion that is instead under heavy security?

    • jesus wept
      September 24, 2017

Based on what I have seen and heard I conclude that the reason the PM did not say a thing about his village is because he did not want to be asked about the condition of his village and mansion, while his fellow villagers and constituents were homeless and his mansion was relatively in tack. So it was easier for him to show some emotion by shedding some tears. So while many concentrate on his 17 minute address to the UN body followed by the comfort of being home with his family in NY eating his steak and enjoying life, I am concerned about my fellow citizens he left in ashes and tears to come enjoy his luxurious comfort of the big apple

The morning after the storm Tony was bragging about his “lovely wife” and son that are safe in Florida. I guess he will stay a little longer to cash out on his insurance because unlike the many poor that had no insurance, I bet he has. A day later Hartley Henry was safe in his Barbados home and was happy to call ABS radio in Antigua, to brag about himself being Skerrit’s chief advisor. Four days after Maria devastated DA, PM Skerrit, despite saying he was left homeless, though we know his mansion in Vielle case is standing strong and under security, yet he had the heart to leave thousands of his people homeless, in pain, hungry, thirsty, destitute, afflicted, wounded, and run to NY, where he family resides in their condo, to give a 17 minute speech at the UN and to meet with Dominicans later that night. Really Mr. PM? If addressing the UN was so important and I wonder how many times in your 17 yrs as PM you saw it fit to go address them. Now that we are down and out all you running

In fact almost the entire Caribbean islands and others were represented by either their foreign minister or their deputy PM. I mean how could the PM convince me that he really cares about the suffering of my people when over 50% of the people are without a place to sleep, without food or water and you leaving them in that crisis to come and have a good time here? PM since the storm I have not a word about my mother, three brothers and two sisters, who along with myself are all RED! Shouldn’t you be there with them and allow us in the US and other parts of the world to mobilize people to donate towards a serious cause? DA was in a crisis during Maria and though the hurricane left us, the crisis has only worsen and the people are left like sheep without a shepherd, children without father, and a ship without a captain. Sentiments exactly. Most leaders would try to obtain first hand information on there country after such a major disaster!!!I suspect much more could have been achieved for the country, the man and his mettle if he had summoned the opposition parties in a consultative session with his party to chart the efforts of search, rescue and restoration. Instead he jumps ship and flies to another country to enjoy the hospitality there whilst, the destitute who had voted for him are allowed to wallow in their own waste.

I know that many a world leader would spare no effort to return to his country to assess the disaster first hand if he were abroad; Instead our leader runs from the situation. He should be at home leading the search and rescue efforts and comforting the needy, not in the USA where it is safe and free of the effects of the hurricane. Mr Leader let him who have eyes see what you mean by being there leader. A leader only in good times!!!! Very Sad.

Hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes are now deliberately engineered to subdue the masses, to depopulate and to create a world population that is a slave to carbon taxing regimes.

Folks, it is human activity that is 100% responsible for carbon emissions (which has nothing to do with ‘climate change’, which is a 100% scam). That being the case, the only way carbon emissions can be reduced is by a depopulation program. First you start with ‘nature reserves’ where human activity is NOT permitted, then you follow that up with ‘sustainablity programs’ whereby the state gets to control every aspect of human life and activity. Then you follow that up with engineered diseases and by making euthanasia available for all and abortions (the UK has recently voted for this) available up to the TIME OF BIRTH!!!.
