Residents of Dominica in areas prone to flooding, landslides and falling rocks are advised to exercise caution as moisture and instability associated with a westward moving tropical wave continue to generate cloudiness, shower and isolated thunderstorm activity across the island chain during the next 24 hours.
Moderate seas are expected during the next 24 to 48 hours with waves peaking near 7.0 feet. Small craft operators and sea bathers are advised to exercise caution.

Today, Dominicans are fortunate that they get the weather forecast. If I recall, in those previous years, all we heard was, a hurricane is on its way and whether we would get the eye of the storm, less or the full blast.
The rain fell, the wind blew, the lightning flashed, the thunder rolled and the storm raged on, sometimes into a hurricane with huge sea waves. After school, some of us would leave home to specifically watch the high waves. This was something to see. Do D/cans do this today? 
Looking back on those days I wonder if we heard anything at all. All or most D/cans had then was a radio.
When I was a child, D/ca did experience the eye of a hurricane. We did not have TV and Internet and did not know the extent of damage throughout the island.
Today, the weather forecast is improved immensely. This gives D/cans time to prepare. This is progress of one kind.
