BREAKING NEWS: Flood warning issued for Dominica

Roseau River on Sunday afternoon

Weak unstable conditions due to the presence of a trough system will continue to produce cloudiness and scattered showers across the islands during the next 24 hours.

A further increase in moisture and instability can be expected to spread northwards across the island chain tonight into tomorrow.

As a result, a flood warning has been issued for Dominica from 6pm this evening to 6pm tomorrow.

People in areas prone to flooding, landslides and falling rocks are advised to be vigilant and to exercise extreme caution.

Moderate to rough seas are expected during the next 24 hours with waves peaking near 8.0 feet. Small craft operators and sea bathers, particularly on the east coast, are advised to exercise caution.

So long the rivers should have been dredged and cleaned up. So much to be done and things are moving so slow. Poor poor management.

That view of Roseau across the swollen river is a sad presentation of our capital. It looks ramshackle, bedraggled , rundown and dilapidated. It sounds drastic but I sometimes wonder if it would not be better to tear it down and start afresh.

“RETRIBUTION” a beautiful Reggae song from the singing Empress Itana, says it all, whenever i listen to this song, i’m placed in the heart land of Dominica, the things Dominicans would say and sometimes do, are not prerequisite to Heavenly Blessings, sad to say, but that’s the truth. There will be no peace or rest from the natural elements, until Dominicans change their mindset, this is the language of the GOD’/GODESSES, are we listening?

We must realise that most of Roseau is located in the flood plane of the Roseau river. The very name of the town alludes to that. I’m afraid the place will be at an increased risk of flooding in future, especially those parts that are lower than the river banks. The least vulnerable area would be the old French quarter. We should seriously take this into consideration before spending millions on development plans.

      Well said!

The vulnerability of the Roseau flood plane, along with other flood planes, is one of is one of the hard facts that will have to be faced if we really are to become climate resilient.

Training walls are not the answer. By nature, rivers broaden in their lower reaches rather than deepen. If left unobstructed a river can take care of itself.

I know many of you reds may be asking , how foolish is this person to comment in this manner?
The answer is, Dominica has become more vulnerable and susceptible to severe weather conditions due to the inaction of this curropt and evil government.
Many years ago money had been donated to Dominica to put measures and infrastructure in place to reduce the impact of natural disasters but these corrupt and greedy few spend it otherwise, hence increasing our risks.
These fellas have really killed Dominica and these morons are saying Labour ka twavay.

no this happens in Dominica every year. Christmas and Jan is always very wet in Dominica the problem is that Dominican people and the gov only ever wait for something to go wrong then they talk about fixing it then wait til it happen again to start talk back about fixing it again

ZERO ok idk, but Roseaus isn’t dreaded for sure, you can jump from any of those bridges and land on river bed safe and sound….

    Please Mr Skerrit,

Where is the wall to protect Roseau and Bath Estate ?

Now where have we seen sights like the one in the picture above before? Everywhere!!!! Why? Because rivers all across the island were not properly dredged. They do a partial clearance in certain places and as soon as some moderate rain falls it looks like no work was done. I mean if you’re gonna do a project then do it right. This Roseau River is a disaster waiting to happen. The way they so call dredge those rivers are not climate resilient (the cabal’s new favorite phrase). The only normalcy I see happening in this place is normal service resumed in the sale of passports and filling their already deep pockets with more $$$$$ this type of leadership therefore cannot be acknowledged as “going green”?

Not again ! What are we to do? Yet we continue to politik fight amongst selves and give foreigners priority of fellow citizens. Time to get together protect each other. Otherwise We are Fire Under Coffee Kettled for ever.

That is bad especially since the hurricane stripped away a lot of the foliage, look at the river and see the brown mass of top soil being washed away by the rain. This is the last thing Dominica needs right now, hopefully this heavy rain will not last long. Hope the people without roofs had time and materials to cover their houses before these rains. This is truly sad.
