Residents have been advised to continue monitoring the passage of Tropical Storm Erika which is expected to produce shower and thunderstorm activity mainly across the northern island chain during the next 24 to 48 hours.
At 5 a.m., the center of Erika was located about 390 miles east of Antigua and is moving toward the west at near 18 mph.
The storm is expected to move near or over portions of the northern islands tonight with maximum sustained winds near 40 mph with higher gusts.
Slow strengthening is also expected during the next 48 hours and tropical storm conditions are expected to reach the warning area by tonight.
The warning areas include: Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands with potential threat to The Bahamas and Florida.
“Residents in Dominica should continue to monitor the progress of this system,” the Dominica Meteorological Service warned.
Moderate sea conditions are expected during the next 12 to 24 hours with waves peaking at near 7.0 feet.
An increase is likely with the passage of tropical storm. Small craft operators and sea bathers should exercise caution.

Tonight, when I came in to my place of residence, the first thing I heard on Canada Broadcasting Corporation – CBC Radio that, Erika hit Dominica and four people died.
Of course, I am concerned and anxious to know about this. I thought I would have seen some sort of information on DNO. Did Erika also affected you?
I am wondering what part of the island Erika hit. Since it is a bit late I did not telephone anyone in Dominica. Will do so on Friday.
May all my friends in Dominica-be safe and god bless you all
I just read that the storm was pretty bad there and that some people are missing. As visitors to your beautiful island last year I just wanted to say our hearts and prayers go out to you and I’m hoping those who are missing are found safe.
