Heat waves to affect C’bean during Atlantic hurricane season

Caribbean islands, especially those in the southern region, have been urged to prepare for heat waves as they will be a feature of the 2017 rainy season. The warning was issued by Dr Simon Mason of the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology in his presentation ‘Caribbean Heat outlooks: Research and product development’ to the participants attending the Caribbean Regional Climate Outlook Forum, which opened yesterday.

Simon said in the past, not a lot of emphasis was placed on heat waves but data gathered from islands over the years, has shown that this is a growing challenge.

“It’s time to investigate the problems of heat waves and the best way to deal with it in this region,” said Simon. He also pointed out that in the United States of America, heat waves kill more people than tornadoes, while in 2003 heat waves killed 30,000 in France.

A heat wave is a prolonged period of excessively hot weather, which may be accompanied by high humidity, especially in oceanic climate countries.

Occasionally we get those heat waves. At least in D/ca consider the land of rivers. If it is not raining/storming, the river is a good place to bathe to cool off.
During a heat wave we are told to drink plenty of water. Of course, this should not be overdone. Water and cold/soft drinks help.
Seniors are also told to stay indoors.
An advice which is also given is to keep your drapes closed. This could keep out the heat/humidity.
I heard a minister in T.O. stated that just as we have a heating system in winter, landlords should also provide an air-conditioning system. Those who especially own homes and some tenants who reside in apartments and/or rent whatever form of housing, purchase an air-conditioner. During a heat wave they are all sold out.
I was informed that landlords charge approximately $80.00 to tenants for air-conditioned usage. This is for the electricity. It could cost more today.

Thought I would further share the following:
The heat wave could last a few weeks. We know it affects those who have no air-condition; more so the elderly. Fans of any nature do not help whatsoever at such a time. In places where people die from the heat wave, it is due to not having air-conditioning in their homes/apartments.
We know that if an air-condition system breaks down especially in houses, it is extremely expensive to repair/replace it – a few thousands of dollars.
Former Mayor Ford (RIP) said he would work to ensure all buildings in the city are air-conditioned. I assumed especially the new ones. All his well-meaning vision and works for the future of Toronto passed with him.
