Feeder bands from Hurricane Irma are expected to begin affecting Dominica by Monday night, the Dominica Meteorological Service has reported.
At 5:00 am, Hurricane Irma was located near latitude 16.9 degrees north and longitude 52.3 degrees west or about 625 miles east of the Leeward Islands and is moving west south west at 14mph.
Maximum sustained winds remain near 115mph.
The center of Hurricane Irma is projected to move over or just northeast of the northern Leeward Islands by Tuesday into Wednesday. However, feeder bands are expected to begin to affect Dominica by tonight.
Regardless of the projected path, a deterioration in conditions to include showers, thunderstorms, gusty winds and dangerous seas are expected, especially on Tuesday and Wednesday.
All users of the sea are advised to take all necessary precautions to protect life and property.
Residents are advised to monitor the progress of this system and to make all the necessary preparations as Irma continues to move towards the Lesser Antilles.
Improved conditions can be expected across the island during today.
However, a deterioration in conditions can be expected by tonight as Major Hurricane Irma approaches the area resulting in an increase in cloudiness with showers, gusty winds and isolated thunderstorms.
Moderate seas are expected during the next 24 hours with waves peaking near 8.0 feet. Thereafter, seas are expected to increase to peak near 15.0 feet in northerly swells.
