The Government of Barbados has discontinued the Tropical Storm Warning for Dominica as Tropical Storm Matthew moves away from the Windward Islands.
Tropical Storm Warnings have also been discontinued for St. Lucia, Guadeloupe and Martinique.
At 5:00 AM AST (0900 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Matthew was located near latitude 14.0 North, longitude 64.7 West 413km/ 257 miles to the south-southwest of Dominica.
Matthew is moving toward the west near 16 mph (26 km/h), and a general westward motion is expected with some decrease in forward speed during the next couple of days. On the forecast track, the center of Matthew is forecast to pass to the north of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao on Friday.
Maximum sustained winds are near 65 mph (100 km/h) with higher gusts. Gradual strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and Matthew is forecast to become a hurricane Thursday night.
Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 185 miles (295 km) primarily to the north and east of the center.
The estimated minimum central pressure is 1002 mb (29.59 inches).
Some occasional showers and a few isolated thunder storms are still possible throughout the day as the system continues to track westward away from Dominica.
Mariners and other users of the sea should remain in port due to dangerously high seas. A small craft warning is in effect.
Persons in areas prone to flooding, landslides and falling rocks are advised to continue to be vigilant and to exercise caution.
Could somebody explain to me why is it that the government of Barbados was the entity that had to declare the tropical storm warning on & off for Dominica? How does that work?
I’ve seen this happen a few times. Why not the government of Dominica or the Dominica Meteorological Office declaring and terminating a tropical storm warning for Dominica?
