Dominican killed in Antigua

Police in Antigua are reporting no breakthroughs that would lead them to the perpetrators of a gas station heist which left a Dominican dead.

The Antigua Observer reports that Dorothy Prince was shot on Friday when four masked men robbed a Texaco gas station before making good their escape in a heavily tinted car with $5,200.

According to the Antigua Observer, an alleged eyewitness reports that three men masked with guns invaded the gas station while a fourth remained in the getaway car. Upon seeing the men pump attendees dropped their money bags as they were trained to do and allowed the thieves to take them.

Apparently Prince was unaware of what was going on and the eyewitness said he heard one explosion. The wounded woman was able to walk to the back of the gas station and into the mart where she stood until ambulance arrived five minutes later.

The Observer said the official police report indicated that Prince was shot three times: in the abdomen, breast and hand. Her liver and lungs were damaged and she died on Saturday.

An assistance fund has been opened to offset funeral expenses and to care for Prince’s two surviving children.

Dominica News Online understands Prince was from the village of Grand Fond.

Every body talks of how sorry they are, and what should happen to the criminals who carry out such acts. But when those same criminals are caught and brought before the courts, we are the same ones who softens our stands on what should happen concerning them. On two occasions in Antigua, men killed and pleaded guilty in court and all they got was years in prison to eat tax payers money. Why won’t these crimes continue in the arbitrary manner in which they do if all i do is go to jail and eat better than some people on the outside? I knew Dorothy, and she was so nice, always smiling. The last time i saw her, i gave her a ride to work. I want to ask the family to hold strong in this time when only you knows how you feel. My God grant you the grace to go though this.

When they go around killing people and doing what they want with people’s children, you dont hear a peep out of amnesty international, but you hang one, and they start spreading bad news about your country. something has to be done. The Caribbean is going to barbarism.

I would like to know what the Government is doing about that situation. I know if that happens to an American citizen, their Government will at least send Representative & law enforcement officers to help investigate. I dnt know Prince but Im Dominican living abroad too. RIP

    • dominican
      February 21, 2012

:) I understand what you are asking and it is a genuine concern, but you also have to understand that dominica is not the same as America.
All the police officers across the caribbean is basically the same and in Dominica we have nothing that makes us better equiped to help in the situation.
On the other hand,if you are refering to sympatizing with the family by sending a representative then thats a great proposal.
In light of that,it would be great if we would upgrade our law enforcement and have better equipment that will help in better investigation..
      Great thought!

      February 20, 2012

I agree with u..DNO d Antigua observer never mentioned about fund being opened for the girl children and for her funeral. The manager of the place where she worked said he was going to pay for her funeral.

        February 20, 2012

        @ Fanchiface

Use your common sense. Think! The manager will pay for her funeral. It is customary that funds are raised for people who are murdered or who have died in an accident to assist the family with present and future expenses. The manager is fully aware of that. For the time being, arrangements must be made to bury her and also to assist her children. Therefore, he will bear the costs.

May you rest in peace Dorothy. Such a senseless killing. Such a waste of life. People are too greedy these days for money. Yes, life is hard, but when innocent people are being killed for things they are not even involved in, then it becomes extreme. Now children are left without a mother. A mother without her daughter. I pray for her children and her family. May the lord give them the strength to comfort each other and stay strong. God is good. What goes around comes around. Those murderers will get theirs.

Our deepest condolences goes out to the family and friends and the entire GrandFond people and by extention Dominican people. May she rest in peace. As i always say there are bad eggs and cowards like those that commited this senseless act of violence on our sister words cannot described such acts, but my hope is they`are caught as i know they will soon, i have faith in the police where ever they are their mission is the same and no less in this case. There is a trend and similarity in the manner of operation in the way those crimes are committed therefor lets hope all our police forces work with each other share information on the activities of crimes, cause those criminals travel with ease from country to country to commit their crimes, crimes as i always say is Global and it should be dealt with a global approach. All family who faces such loss know how painful it is to loose a member of their family in such a manner, this family has experience such pain during the past couple of years. It is an honorable thing by the Antigua Government to set up a fund to assist the family and the deceased two children, lets hope others including my self follow suit hope some one will give a number or open an account in the deceased name where we all can pitch in. This madness must be dealt with at all cost.

We empathize with the passing away of this young woman. May God grant her what she deserves. We hope these criminals are apprehended soon but unfortunately, the system is oppressive, allowing criminals to live yet not applying capital punishment on them!

  41. February 20, 2012

This sort of senseles thing is happening all ovr the Caribbean Islands, but the Judical system sit on their arses and do nothing,to avenge these people’s death.Hanging in the caribbean Islands is still LEGAL,so why not use Deterrence, and they will see how fast the crime rate in the Caribbean Islands will drop.

  42. LOVE DA
    February 20, 2012

Mr.Edison James will you blame the Government Of Antigua for this crime?

If it hold true in one Island them it must hold true to the rest of the caribbean.

My heart goes out for this family. May you stay strong in your time of needs.

Ladies and gentlemen I had to take a parting shot at Mr.James for his reckless statement last week.

Please forgive me if I put in a like politics into this blog.

One crime is to many for any of our caribbean Islands. It is each citizen business to be on the look out. Report what you see !!!!!! Call the authorities !!!!!! The police force can only be good as what the citizen reports !!!!!!!

    • Please note
      February 21, 2012

maybe if our government created more sustainable more of our citizens would stay home to be employed but we build roads bridges and buildings all of which are good but unsustainable in terms of employment. so sadly our citizens migrate amass seeking greener pasture. What happen that our goverment cannot make the pastures a lil bit more chewable in Dominica that we can stay home and live. Research has shown that increase in crimes has a direct relationship to economic and social stability in any country. So since you seem so proud to want to make a mockery off Mr. James’ statement you should wash your eyes with some “zeb couwess” and tell me do you find that there is economic and social stability in dominica? One of the reasons why violent crimes are on the increase in antigua is the increase in hardship, in other words they are not stable and economically and socially anymore.

Such an ignorant comment. I hope you were not a member of the US Special Forces. You may have had some training in spec ops but you definitely are not one. Spec Ops don’t go around bragging! They just do!

I don’t support what happened in Antigua either but if we allow society to denigrate into kill for kill then we have lost our civility!

It is incumbent on law enforcement and the judicial system to ensure that the perpetrators are caught and justice ( to include CAPITAL PUNISHMENT ) be swift!
