Leo Club of Dominica celebrates 17 years

Members of the club

The Leo Club of Dominica will be celebrating 17 years of providing volunteer service to the local community.

On September 14, 1994, the Leo Club of Dominica was chartered under the guidance of Livingstone Cassel as President of the Dominica Lions Club with Mackie Breedy as the President.  Since then the Club has continued to mold young minds in the spirit of volunteerism and community involvement through a number of activities.

The Club can be best known for its organization of the Junior Calypso Monarch Competition, an activity which it has been organizing since 2000 when it was handed over by the then organizers, the Lions Club of Dominica.

Over the years, a number of individuals has passed through the organizational hierarchy of the Club, from the 1st chapter which was chartered in the 1970’s to the 2nd chapter, which is celebrating 17 years. Individuals such as Dave Baron, Carlyn Roberts, Jhune Richards, Leroy Peters etc., Patrick Pemberton, Kathy Lander, among many others.

This year’s celebration coincides with the Visit of Sub-District 60B Governor, Lion Lloyd Barker, MJF of Cricket Umpiring Fame, who will be conducting the Audit of the local Clubs on that evening followed by a social with our sponsor club, The Dominica Lions Club.

As part of the Anniversary Activities, the Leos attended church service at the Roseau Christian Union Mission Church, visited and made a donation to the Roseau Infirmary, held a leadership workshop among other activities.

The Leo Club of Dominica is part of Lions Clubs International and consists of members between the ages of 16-29 The Club meets every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month from 6 pm at the Workshop for the Blind, Federation Drive Goodwill.

Clubs who do things to be noticed are fake and not god sent, do things from the heart and not for others to notice you on tv and say wow, leo club or any other club doing good things…….I just don’t buy into those things….It’s not Godly.

That date 17 years is not entirley accurate. Unless of course there is something in the club’s charter which renders a period of dormancy as being a period of extinction for the group so that it receives a new “birth” when it finally revives.IF that is the case thent he LIONS Club is only a few years old – which is not the case. The LIONS CLUB came to Dominica in 1968.

In 1982 at the St. gerard’s hall there was the installment of the First LEO Club with people like Oliver St. John, Carleen Roberts, Muitchell Raffoul, Ayoub Raffoul, Edna Frampton,Edmund Rodney, Cheryl Tavernier, Valena Jacob, Beverly Blackman etc as pioneer members. I remember the personality Ronald Charles who was inducted as the first President. Lion Akel Raffoul was the Advisor Tamer and Eustacce Renee as Secretary of the LIONS Club then. It was during or about the time that Mr. Hubert Joseph was Lion President. The club personalities such as Curtis Tonge, Mr. Blackman, Joe tavernier, Evans John, Newman Collins etc. The young “lions” met regularly at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Hannah Raffoul on Kennedy Avenue. The installation ceremony was held on a Friday night at the GPH and the following Sunday the group worhsipped together at the St. Alphonsus Church and paraded into Roseau following mass led by afull compliment then of the St. Alphonsus Scouts Troop. What a sight it was that Sunday morning coming into Roseau. At the ceremony there was a visiting “Lion” from Brazil who gave a “pin” to the new LEO President. 1982 to 2011 is 29 years. Is there some explanation why the group is only 17 years having arrived here in 1982 – 29 years ago?

Noted and hence the mention of earlier edition of the club in the article. Records are not readily available of that previous period of activity and Lions International has the Club as being 17 Years old as per the Charter Documents received on September 14, 1994. Its “assumed” that the club was cancelled by the District and International and if that was the case then the years of service of the former club would have been lost upon reinstatement.

If you could submit any information you would have as indicated via the email address listed, it would be much appreciated and maybe contact can be initiated with you with a view of being a associate of the Club so that the history could be properly recorded?
