Dominica seeks funds for cancer treatment facility

Timothy

Health Minister Julius Timothy said funds are being sought to build a cancer treatment facility in Dominica that will serve the Organization of the Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).

“Dominica would like to build the cancer treatment center of the OECS and we are seeking assistance in that regard. We are working along with some of the professors from Ross University who are assisting us in preparing for that,” he said at a press conference to launch Cancer Awareness Month.

This year the Dominica Cancer Society is placing emphasis on prostate cancer. 32 men died from the disease last year.

Meantime President of the Dominica Cancer Society Vina Royer says government has approved a grant of $30,000 to fund a cancer wellness center.

“You should not have to die because you are diagnosed with prostate cancer. You should reach out and we are reaching out and doing our best in that regard. I want to say thanks to government because they recently approved a grant $30,000 that will assist us in setting up a wellness center,” she explained.

If we love and care about the Dominican people so much and the Dominican people should come first in all we do, why don’t we re-allocate the funds for the state house project to the Cancer treatment center!!!! Just a suggestion>>>>

Better late than never. So many had to die to stimulate this idea. None the less I welcome the idea.

I think the 30k is just a drop in the bucket CANCER takes all that you earn in your lifetime and more.

I’ve been there i can tell.

OK, too many people died from heart attack, we need a heart attack treatment centre.
too many people died from rat poisoning we need a rat treatment poison centre.
Too many people died from broken legs we need a broken leg treatment centre.

Why I love the idea, DA still has a long way to go. Right now you can’t even get an MRI in the country! We need a state of the art hospital with an oncology wing, a pediatric wing, a proper ICU, etc.

Government have great ideas but tell us about it when you are doing the ground breaking. The government is only giving 30k towards this brilliant idea! Hmmm ! Hope this center will be constructed away from the major cities to generate income and development to other areas in the country.

@Steve your contribution would be appreciated . You can put a 10K or less towards the center. After all Dominica’s welfare is the responsibility of it’s private citizens as well.

With DA’s rivers, nature trails and rain forest.

Add that to heath spa like Screws. We can promote DA as the heath and wellness place in the Caribbean.

    Go for IT!

I am happy that they are finally seeing the country’s needs. Hospital also needs new equipments to facilitate better handling of the patients. the Hon prime minister’s eyes are closed to the real needs of the country. he more interested in building white house instead of getting money for cancer treatment center. but i guess he finally took some smart pills. Cancer is becoming rampant all over and hats off Timothy

It would be such a benefit for the people of the caribbean who cannot travel to the bahamas or st. thomas to be treated for cancer in dominica. Please remember that cancer is not treated with chemotherapy but also radiation therapy and surgery as the most popular methods. I hope that this facility will be state of the art to give the best treatment possible to the OECS population.

Great, we badly need these facilities in Dominica (the OECS as a whole).

This is what we mean by better medical care.
32 deaths through prostate cancer is way to high.

A cancer treatment facility is a much needed one for Dominica/OECS. Also a pediatric center for children. That should be a separate wing of the five star Hospital.(I hope it is air conditioned). That facility comes with high tech. machines and diagnostic testing. We also need Oncologist and pathologist testing to be done on the island.
We also need an infusion center for cancer patients. Loving and caring nurses to care for these patients especially who has stage 4 & 5 cancer. Also a couple of rooms to provide hospice care for patients with prolong life illness. Hospice supports the patients and families emotional, spiritual and comfort them. (And maybe a chapel in the facility)

First I think that you had best fix up the Princess Margret Hospital to be a first class hospital and facility.
Now where are you going to get the money?

And second, try concentrating on the prevention of the cancer in the first place instead of falling into the conventional mode of ripping off desparate
people with chemo and radiation therapies that have never been proven to reverse cancer.

      October 8, 2011

ok, lets get the basics first before we go into hospice care. and r u implying that the nurses down there and not loving and caring? dont come comparing da to Florida dear. IWhen was the last time u were admitted to the princess margaret hospital to make such a statement? Hats off to all the nurses of the PMH and all over DA. am a nurse in the US too but we cant go comparing da to the us.

      • FLORIDA
        October 8, 2011

@ummm did I say that the nurses at the PMH are not caring and loving?? Look! get your facts right or read what I wrote. That is what I hate/dislike about you people. And was I comparing nurses??? Boy I tell you, maybe the English language is difficulty for some people.

You can not think for me I know what I am saying. Concentrate on your comments and not on mine.

I spent 10 days on the children’s ward of PMH with my daughter & all of the nurses were wonderful. THe nurses aids however, were a different story. Some of them need to be retrained & some of them have no business working with children!

      • Liz c
        October 9, 2011

yes. we do need to take care of the BASICS before we introduce HOSPICE CARE. But I totally agree about the Nurses. Majority of them are FANTASTIC. But some of them REALLY DO NEED TO BRUSH UP ON THE NURSE/PATIENT RELATIONSHIP. They know who they are.

I am loving this…this is what is needed in this country… Strategic Thinking.

This is a great revenue generator for Dominica if this this is Prepared, Planned, Designed,Implemented properly.

The operation would fall in nicely. I wish the Government and Ross University GOOD LUCK.

Min Timothy, if this thing works out well, this becomes a “sticky solution” for Dominca and Ross as this would create a marriage of idea and long term goals.

Can you guys see I am excited and happy about that.

I can just see the low hanging fruits of possibilities for new entrepreneurs…

And with Geo Thermal…the potential is tremendous

    Let’s go DA

      October 8, 2011

      Great idea. I have been saying this for years now. The only hope for us is medical tourism. Only if we had used the state house money for;
      1. Cancer treatment center
      2. Dialysis center
      3. Surgical Hospital
These facilities would serve the entire OECS and make us the medical center of the caribbean. Just add a small air ambulance (Helicopter) and we got it.

Hopefully, there will be no kickbacks associated with such a scheme and the labor force will be at least 75% Dominican
