Bishop pre-election message

Bishop of Roseau, Gabriel Malzaire

Reverend Fathers, Deacons, brothers and sisters in Christ, I greet you in the name of Jesus Christ the universal King.

We have all learnt form the Honourable Prime Minister that Polling Day for the upcoming General Elections will be on Friday, December 6, 2019.  It is the day when all eligible voters in the Commonwealth of Dominica will have the privilege to exercise their franchise by electing the leaders who will govern for the next five years. It is indeed a sacred duty and a noble responsibility entrusted to all.

Past experience has taught us that in such a period of intense competition between contending parties, the desired levels of civility among citizens can be compromised.  In that regard, therefore, I wish to reiterate my advice and challenge to the Clergy and to all the faithful as regards our role in the pre-Election period. Quoting again the Election Code of the Dominica Christian Council, I wish to remind you that:

As citizens we are:

  1. To recognize that every adult citizen has the privilege to vote according to his or her conscience, and therefore the duty, not to neglect to exercise this precious right;
  1. To make an effort to know the parties, their aims, objectives and policies in order to make a reasonable choice;
  1. To vote as free persons and not to debase ourselves by selling our votes for money or any personal favour;
  1. To oppose and reject any candidate who use bribery, intimidation or threats of violence to win votes;
  1. To reject any invitation to join in the harassment of those whose political views are different from ours;
  1. To consider that integrity, impartiality, good character and sound judgment are qualities required of those to be chosen;
  1. To remember that no political or economic system is perfect; and
  1. To accept the verdict of the majority, even if this differs from how one has voted in accordance with one’s conscience.

As Clergy, we are:

  1. To recognize that our basic obligation is to promote unity in our communities, and therefore to refrain from saying or doing anything likely to be interpreted as partisan politics; and
  1. To recognize our responsibility to give, at all times and especially during the period before and up to election time, moral and spiritual guidance to our flocks.

I invite all Catholic, all other Christians and all peoples of good will, to join me in making this pre-election period one of intense prayer and fasting for ourselves and for the nation. I invite all Catholics to pray the rosary daily and when in attendance offer the Sacrifice of the Mass so that justice, love and peace will reign in our land.

And may the peace of Christ which is far beyond all understanding, reign in the heart of each one of us.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Rev. Gabriel Malzaire

Bishop of Roseau

    Mr, Madam Lord help this nation: I take it that this is you guide to contribute good thoughts to our people, especially to you. I expected that you fought hard and thoughtful before you en this. I read wondering what is the theme, the objective of this script?
    “Remove the idols from your churches, stop praying to humans that have died so long ago, petition to Rome to give back the Gold and jewels stolen from Africa, have Rome apologies or the massacres of indigenous people all over the globe in the name of spreading Christianity”
    Have you thought that you many have insulted, abused and showed no respect for Christianity and its people of Dominica and all over the world?
    I have no issue with the idols, I am not sure what your stress and guilt is, then you go to confession and be guided and focus. Don`t you have pictures of great people, whatever field in your home or office, eg. Luther King, Bob Marley Paul Robeson are stalwarts? Stop this blind “idolalist” and see the bigger…

Too much Bool going on and please be reminded what they are: 1. Bin Bobol, 2. Fertilizer Bobol, 3. Red Clinic Bobol and other failures that we have had why Skerrit is a fake because he and his fake Labour government killed our agriculture and failed Skerrit etc planned and condone this fake Red Clinic where many people que up at the entrance of the Financial Centre waiting for Skerrit to call then up to his office and given cash exchange for loyalty. Skerrit knows that he cannot compare himself, to that of Hon. Linton. The obvious decorum of Hon Linton is where Skerrit is unable to be. We welcome Hon. Linton as Incoming PM with Team UWP Team Dominica.

      Clayton, there is a difference in religious demagoguery, Christianity, and the word of God!

      Unless one knows what thus said the Lord God in his words written in the Bible, they tend to believe the rubbish that man is talking.

      When he talk about rosary; rollings beads saying hale Mary full of grace, though that is found in the bible, it was never intended as praying to God.

      The person when she said to Mary, “hale Mary full of grace the Lord is with thee blessed are you among women; and went on to mention the fruit of thy womb” was complementing her, the moment Jesus moved within her.

      Doc, even in our modern day unborn infants (baby’s) still move in their mothers belly.

      The mothers often say their baby is kicking them.

      Now his crap pertains to his followers involved in Catholicism, he need to confine such nonsense in his catholic building, and give such advise to his  brainwash Catholicism believers, and followers only.

        Fet, I have to say that I disassociate myself from what you just penned, compared to the intellectual messages that you have penned previously on many subject matters. There is absolutely nothing that Clayton wrote which is of any offence to anyone, maybe more so to those who may not be Christians, religious and committed to their faith and their God. I do not trespass nor do I condemn such matters and thoughts of others who took time to express themselves like you do. I read all comments including yours and I digest it, learn from it and comment professionally on it and not degrade or give any derogatory message to affect the message of any writer, including yourself Fete. Some people are religious and others chose not to and they both must be respected. So we are all brothers and sisters under God. I quote Clayton, where he commented:

    Mr.Malzaire is a walking contradiction, he has never spoken out on all the wrong that has been done to the Dominican people by this current administration,he has stayed quiet while the people of Dominica were disrespected time and time again by Roosevelt Skerrit,accepting funds from from the latter to rennovate the catholic church which i grew up going to,over 5 years the church has been closed and cannot be reopened to accomodate the diocese of roseau congregation, up to this day it cannot be completed. Mr. Malzaire is a shame to the christian community and does not deserve to represent the diocese of roseau or Dominica as a bishop, just like Roosevelt skerrit and the labour party,he too needs to pack up and go.

      Mr. “For Dominica”, please be diplomatic and not spontaneous in hate. You must be able to define in the context that we are able to read, comprehend and accept what you write. But your message is all over the place and I am not sure what to believe or take as substance.
      Also, we need respect for those who have a certified named letter before their name of position. Correction, it is Bishop Malzaire and not Mr. Respect please. I am not a fan of Skerrit but there too it is the position of the office that is held, we respect moreseo. It is Bishop Malzaire, no problems and Hon. Skerrit (although he does not deserve this position and name). Skerrit has failed us, disrespected us and reduced our poor to beggars and that is NOT leadership and helping the poor. For Dominica, what you have penned above here is degusting, shameful and discourteous. Shame on you. I excuse myself from this insulting and disrespecting thoughts of yours.
      Shame! It is Bishop Malzaire, for your information.

But your comments are all personal and kindagerden stuff. We know Skerrit is a failure and not an intellectual, but just spontaneous and lacks knowledge of the bigger picture of a politician in government, let alone ably sufficient to manage this ailing, poverty stricken Dominica of ours that you have created and reduced more to the deep pit of poverty, the reason why all you do is offer handout cash for loyalty to our people & shamefull chant “We love our PM”. What utter nonsense and hypocrisy. That we see in the Caribbean. We know where we are upstairs on the Financial Centre, that Skerrit is immature. As civil servants it bothers us but we move on with our jobs as failed Skerrit is of no help. Skerrit must go. He has ruined our Dominica. Get Lost, Go.

      Jamie, this is a despicable statement, and you need to repent, say the rosary three a times a day and pray for our Dominica.
      What I am saying Jamie is that I picked up from this statement that in your heart you mean well and want to say something of substance to Bishop & us, but you cant achieve this with hate, deception in your heart. This is for our Dominica, the future stability and honesty for our children. Be open in what you want to say, but let it always be decent, humanistic and truthful and your message will flow nicely to those who are blind, support a very corrupted Labour government AND THAT THEY HAVE FAILED OUR PEOPLE, and they must Go. We have in waiting Hon. Lennox Linton and his high decent professional Team who will transform our Dominica where Skerrit has failed and he must Go. Team UWP and Hon. Linton will represent us in the best way possible that is dictated by sound principles, that our people come first, that we serve our people decently, with decent UWP Team.

    “I invite all Catholics to pray the rosary daily and when in attendance offer the Sacrifice of the Mass so that justice, love and peace will reign in our land”. the Bishop

    Mr. Bishop Sir, you should have left out that part of your message, which is quoted above.

    In doing so, you continue to separate your “church” from the “Church of Christ Jesus”; and you continue to advocate “religion” that is what the involvement of the Rosary represents.

    And by using it to pray, you are not sending your petitions to God, because He is not a God of Idol Worshipers–that is what the Rosary is–God will not, and is not receiving that kind of prayer.

    Sir, as Christians, our relationship with God is only possible by faith, not of works.

    This relationship is of God’s Grace in Love. He calls to demonstrate this Grace in us for His glory.

    Meaning, we must allow Him to put His Traits of Love, in us, for the World to see; we don’t do that with a Rosary.

      I am compelled to give you thumbs up on this one even if I think you are also a hypocrite!

       But that man beats it all: Whereas, some people believe Satan is the only devil, the bible speaks of devils, of which he is one of the devils plaguing the earth and Dominica in general!

      The man is so ignorant; what the hell rosary is he talking about, there is no place in the bible the word rosary is mentioned!

       When Jesus disciples ask him to teach them to pray, he taught them “the Our Father’s prayer.”

      He did not tell them to pray to his earthly birth mother the Virgin Mary, Christians are instructed to pray to his father in his name.

      I am not preaching.

      Praying is a solemn request for help or expression of thanks addressed to God or an object of worship!

      Simply, we talk to God in the name of Jesus, his stupid commentary do not belong on DNO, we are not all Catholic.

    • Pipo
      November 14, 2019

      Elisabeth, your intolerance of other peoples religious practices is unchristian. You want to have a law forbidding people to pray their rosary then? Live and let live lady like Jesus preached, as long as you dont commit an offence. You sound an impossible person and yes I will pray for you.

      • November 14, 2019

        @Pipo, no thanks, I will pray for myself, to the Holy God of Spirit in Love, He always hears my prayer because I sent by the Power of His Holy Spirit that is in me.

        Once again I am saying that God does not receive any form of religious practice; we are called to relate to Him by sincere faith–religion is about works, and so is its practice.

        I would remain quiet if the Bishop did not mention “Christian” a Christian does not get involved in “religious practices” because he or she knows that God turns His back from those kinds of worship.

        Here is what God says about religious people:

        “These people draw near to Me with their mouth, and honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ ” @Matthew 15: 8-9

        The “commandments” of men are all grounded on “religion”. And religious practices take the form of its nation’s culture–God is Spirit, He has no “culture”

        Thank you Pipo, well said and well advocated. The Bishop is a servant of the God, and that of the Christian Church, the Cathedral and other catholic churches ,well balanced and positive all over our Dominica. People who comment and vehemently appears not to be church goers or practicing Christianity the best way possible. Politics has its rules and weaknesses and so is Christianity. Catholics. that is why we respect always the views of all and we put in perspective as intellectuals and not spreading hate and spewing different words and language at people. Let us discuss in humane & Christly manner. Listen to all, comprehend, research and ponder before we respond and put pen on paper. We need a well communicating island where we exchange and discuss the politics of each other that we learn of and embrace of to help us move on. We need communities, our villages, our nature isle Dominica. Lets continue to talk, even those atheists who dont go to church. But respect All. I go, you too?

    Dear bishop Malzaire. I have said it before, and I say it again that I am sure you mean well. I do however take exception to your expressed view that we have a privilege to vote. We have a right to vote, not a privilege because that implies that we are beholden to some authority for exercising a right, guaranteed by our constitution.
    Equally, the election is governed by strict and lucid rules laid out in the same constitution that apply to this election. It is our constitution that prevails, not the code of the Dominica Christian Coucil. With respect, it is not a matter for the church, any church, how the election should be conducted. It is for this very reason that our constitution also precludes any member of the clergy from standing as a member of parliament. I share with you the wish that the election will take place in peace, allowing those qualified to vote to do so without hindrance, according to their conscience.m

      @Dominican, in the time of ancient Israelites there was only One Head of State, it was the King ruling over the congregation–people; but God chose the Tribe of Levy to do the works of the Temple-they were referred to as the “Priests”.

      David, who was the King of Israel for 40 years, said to God “I will declare Your name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise You”

      Today, PM Skerrit cannot speak one word about God for the people not to ridicule him.

      But, man has unfairly, turned his responsibility of the “Church” to that of “politics”. Their summon is all grounded on the things of the World. The “Laws” of “Religion” is their ground of worship–the “doctrines” which God detests

      God is nowhere in their in minds, how can they claim to be Leaders of the Church, I don’t understand.

      That is why God’s Prophet Isaiah said: “All we like sheep have gone astray, we have gone, everyone, to his own way”. Definitely.

        They are the leaders off the church. You go to church, pray, go to confession and you will be accepted and respected as a full members of the church. You talk and pen too much nonsense, it is time that you genuflect and go after people on social media with BS talk. Go to church, respect the churches, its congregation hierarchy and leaders.
        Because on social media yo are not getting anywhere. 99% of what I read of your comments are all negative. No one takes your thoughts and comments seriously. Its dismissed soon as it comes in.
        God Bless you! Wake up and be careful. NO harm done.

    Malzaire I am in agreement with all what is said. These should have always been the case. I also learn as a Catholic confession is good for soul and admitting you were wrong is the first indication of being sorry for your sins and being contrite. In this regard please return the 500K you received in 2014 under false pretenses. That is a stain on the church. That donation lead to the award from the church order to the PM. The church belongs to us and not Skerrit. Skerrit received no fame or accolades for our states money he gave to our church.
