Dominica Solid Waste Corporation undertakes national highway cleanup

National highway clean up

Roseau, Dominica-September 20, 2022: The Ministry of Environment Rural Modernisation and Kalinago Upliftment is undertaking a national highway cleanup activity effective September 12, 2022.

Owners of derelict and abandoned vehicles are cordially informed that the Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation will be undertaking the removal of derelict vehicles as part of the project.

Derelict vehicle means:

A. Any abandoned or discarded motor vehicle; or

B. Any motor vehicle stored or kept in a public place, which is in a dilapidated condition that cannot be safely used for the purpose of transportation.

According to Section 40 (1) of the 2002 Dominica Solid Waste Management Act: Derelict Vehicles shall be taken by the owner to an approved site designed by the Corporation for the purpose.

Section (3): Where the owner of any derelict vehicle cannot be identified, the said vehicle will be removed to an approved site.

Owners of derelict vehicles are to remove vehicles by October 7, 2022.

Failure to do so will result in the derelict vehicles being towed to the Fond Cole Sanitary Landfill.

Great initiative if it actually happens. They need to pass through the housing schemes in Bellevue. What a site to see up there smh!

Shouldn’t these activities be routine to keep the place looking decent?
Another thing I see littering the roads are empty shipping containers. I don’t understand why the authorities allow these people to park (for years) containers on the side of the road.

A very good initiative and not before time. I hope this is not a “one off” but repeated let’s say every six months. The owners of this garbage, if not fined, should be charged for the cost of disposal. Every vehicle has a unique VIN no. stamped somewhere on the chassis for traceability and I trust the authorities record this upon first registration, so it should not be a problem to trace the litter bugs, who turn our island into a dump.

LOL just watch and see who are the people with old vehicles that have not moved for donkey years but CANNOT be touched by solid waste    . And, if they do tow them away, they will be returned to their original place with new tires   as soon the owner walks up the financial center stairs. Mark my words, only those with no political sway will be affected.

There must be stringent laws and hefty penalties in place against littering and illegal dumping. These laws should be rigorously enforced. Short of this the problem will become like a recurring decimal. Within a short time the landscape will be uglified with domestic refuse and bulk waste.

If we cannot address our debris problems, how are we going to solve our bigger issues?

Solid Waste is a joke. Some months ago they had the same clean up and up till now there are several derelict vehicles on Elliot Avenue, compliments the mechanic Char Low.

And Char Low lives right opposite where those vehicles are

Make Dominica Clean Again! As a Sustainable Development Goal, is it possible to clean up all of Dominica by 2025? And get rid of all the rats?

Much love for you my fellow countryman even if we are not politically aligned.

I am all in with solid waste doing their thing. But I know just like other times this is most likely another show because of the upcoming Creole Festival. Plus, it will only impact those who don’t toe the DLP party line just like previous attempts. Lets see what happens. Oh, by the way while Bwa-Banday is not a womyel, I do like a stiff drink every now and them.
