ANNOUNCEMENT: Sewer lift construction at River Bank

DOWASCO informs residents of River Bank and the general public that we will be carrying out construction of a new sewer Lift Station along the River Bank to Pump Sewerage through a 12” Ductile Iron pipeline along the Dominica-China Friendship Bridge to the Baytown Treatment Plant from June 25, 2019.

There will be local access to the Roseau Market and traffic will be diverted to Ship Street from Bayfront during that period.

Vehicle owners are asked to keep the road clear during the said works; motorist and pedestrians are asked to exercise caution.

DOWASCO regrets any inconvenience that may be caused and thanks customers and the general public for their understanding.

While it is good that attempts are being made to remedy the sewage problem in the vicinity of the Roseau River Bank, I question positioning the pipe alongside the low-slung Dominica-China Friendship Bridge. Other than as a temporary measure, slinging sewage pipes alongside vulnerable bridges is not the best option.

A better long term solution would be a prefabricated combined sewer pipe and pedestrian single-span arched bridge. Given good design, the bridge could be aesthetically pleasing and an asset to Roseau’s river side.

Building a new bridge just to support a sewer line of maybe 150 feet does not appear to justify costs; we need to ask how was the pipe suspended prior to Hurricane Maria?

A lift station requires constant maintenance to ensure the pump works efficiently; what about the constant smell of raw sewerage in the vicinity of the market and KFC?

Find out from the dumb Canadian engineer who took five years to create a blunder like this during the UWP Government.
