After 2 days of national mourning, Cultural icon, Dr. Alwin Bully to be laid to rest today

Dominica’s Cultural Icon, Dr. Alwin Anthony Bully will be laid to rest today.

All flags were flown at half-staff yesterday, Tuesday, April 4 and are also being flown today as the country observed 2 national days of mourning for the late Dr. Bully.

The Government of Dominica bestowed an official funeral to Dr. Bully to honour his tremendous contribution in the areas of arts, culture and education.

The funeral will take place at the St. Gerald Cathedral Chapel in Roseau at 10 am, followed by interment at the Roseau Catholic Cemetery.

Official mourners, including President of Dominica, His Excellency Charles Savarin, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, Speaker of the House of Assembly and all Government Ministers, will attend the funeral service.

Mourners are kindly requested to be attired in colours of the national flag or in madras prints.

Members of the public are also invited to attend in celebration of the life of the late Cultural Icon.

The funeral mass will be broadcast live on Dominica News Online (DNO), Government media platforms and radio stations.

A cultural tribute for the late Dr. Bully entitled ‘Shapes in the Clouds’ will be held tonight at the Old Mill Cultural Centre at 7:00pm.

Dr. Bully passed away on Friday March 10, at the age of 74.

He was the designer of Dominica’s national flag and was bestowed the Sisserou Award of Honor, the island’s second highest honor, for his work.

Dr Bully was also a famed playwright, director, graphic artist, set designer, poet and short story writer, carnival designer and composer.

Some of his many awards and recognition include:

-National Drama Association of Trinidad and Tobago’s 2007 Cacique Award for Regional Theatre -Induction into Jamaica’s Culture for Development Hall of Fame.

-The University of Technology’s (in Jamaica) 2006 Arts Award

-The LIME Creole Lifetime Award for contribution to arts and culture in Dominica and the region

-University of the West Indies (UWI) Alumni Award of Excellence for outstanding contribution to culture in Dominica and the Caribbean
