Civil engineer Delbert Paris and Marketing Officer of the Central Cooperative Credit Union (CCCU) Lorraine Henderson-Reid have been selected by the Marigot parliamentary representative to serve as his two opposition senators in the House of Assembly.
Anthony Charles, the independent candidate who successfully defeated the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) candidate in the December 6 general election, validated the news to Dominica News Online (DNO) this morning.
“I am very confident in their abilities to provide constructive feedback in the house,” the opposition leader-in-waiting stated. “I know that together, we will be able to get things done.”
Charles said that Jesma Paul Victor, another independent candidate who was elected to the Salisbury Constituency, will choose the other two people who will represent the opposition in the house.
When contacted by DNO, Mrs Victor who was just yesterday sworn in as the leader of the opposition – a post that will alternate between her and Charles every 18 months- stated that while she has identified two individuals, their names will only be released to the public until after she has presented them to the president of Dominica early next week.
Additionally, when questioned by DNO on report that Clara Shillingford Marsh, an attorney, and Sean Douglas, a former DLP press secretary, were her senatorial candidates, Mrs Victor responded by stating, “to be very honest, someone just called me on that very same issue and neither Sean Douglas nor Clara Shillingford are true.”
Why do these disgruntled Blues hide behind the cloak of “Independent?” Why? This is disingenuous, it is deceitful, and it is a way of abusing the trust of the people.
So Peeping Tom, why does Skerrit hides behind the the Labour Party, when in fact he and Savarine are Freedomites?

Those who want to berate me for my concern ask yourself this. In any other country of the OECS or CARICOM could a person of this dubious, political calibre be opposition leader in a real parliament? On!y in Dominica peculiar things seem normal.

Almost a full week after her swearing in no one can speak of her academic background, history of service and her ability to lead. All I am hearing is we have a Bawi woman to fight Skerrit.
As I said before, you can put up a donkey in Marigot and Salisbury, as long as IT IS AN independent or UWP candidate, Labour party will lose. Both villages are UWP strongholds. That Bawi woman is already dead on arrival in Parliament.

If Jesma follows suit and nominates two Senators from Salisbury, then the rest of the country is without an effective opposition.
This demonstrates how stupid the UWP strategy to boycott the elections will prove to be. Especially, as the UWP voter’s heeded the call to boycott the elections except in Marigot and Salisbury; a case of do as I say and not as I do. Had UWP voters come out and voted, there is a distinct possibility that Roseau North, Castle Bruce and Salybia would have had some representation in opposition. It’s only a matter of time before those who stayed home in the other constituencies will feel unrepresented and become resentful. Five years is a long time to be victimised.

This situation is bizarre. These people have been taken out to sea in the deepest part of the ocean. Thrown overboard, and told to swim back to shore when they have never even bathe in the shallow waters at the edge of the seashore.
