Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has congratulated the two independent candidates who were successful in the December 6 general election saying he plans to meet with them to chart a way forward for the country.
He also said that he plans to meet the leader of the United Workers Party.
He spoke on state-owned DBS Radio after preliminary results showed that his Dominica Labour Party (DLP) had won at the polls 19 -2.
In Tuesday’s poll, Jesma Paul won the Salisbury Constituency, while Anthony S Charles won the Marigot Constituency as independent candidates.
“I just want to extend congratulations to the two candidates who won in Salisbury and Marigot,” Skerrit said. “I think it clearly shows that the elections were credible and they were free and fair and that the voters of Dominica exercised their right to vote and they voted for candidates of their choosing.”
Skerrit also congratulated the other independent candidates who did not win and Team Unity Dominica (TUD) which he said demonstrated “a high level of maturity and commitment to the cause.”
He said he plans to meet with the two elected independent candidates “so we can chart a new course for the country.”
He stated that he wants to hear from them their visions for their constituencies and what the government can do to support them.
Skerrit said he plans to meet with all candidates who contested the election to see how they can participate in the “national reset that we have spoken about.”
“And of course, I will meet with the leader of the United Workers Party to discuss with him some of his views where the country is concerned,” he said.
Skerrit said he followed closely the independent candidates as well as those from TUD and “they were by and large they were very constructive in engagement” and they demonstrated a level of maturity.
“I have copies of their manifestos, for want of a better term, and we will be looking at those as well,” he said.
The prime minister also congratulated Alex Bruno of TUD for showing what he described as Bruno’s “constructive engagement and dialogue.”
“We cannot disagree on everything,” he stated. “If the government is going to build a hotel to create jobs, why should we try to destroy the hotel? If the government is support farmers to grow more food, why should we condemn this? If we are building a bridge and you say the bridge should be three lanes instead of two, I can understand that but to say bridge is not important when we cannot get across the river, it doesn’t help for constructive engagement.”
Skerrit stated that he hopes the general election gave the opportunity to have “a national reset” in political discourse on the island.
“We have to go back to the days when we fought hard with politics, we campaign hard, we would bruise each other but at the end of the day, maybe two months later we are back as neighbors and brothers and sisters,” he remarked.
He said he has no political axes to grind.
“Certainly somebody who has won five straight terms cannot have have any political axes to grind, so I am really hoping that we can change the atmosphere in the country where the political discussion is concerned,” he said.
He also promised Dominicans “increasingly broad-based engagement” but warned that “people must come with clean hands and they must not come with ulterior motives.”
“They must come to the table with a genuine desire to advancing the national efforts towards our prosperity, our peace and our progress and we look forward to engaging all stakeholders,” he said.

I think the two independent candidates who won their seats should team up with TUD and send UWP into oblivion like the Freedom Party. The decisions by the two existing Opposition Parties not to contest the election has proved to be a catastrophic moronic decision which they should pay for dearly. No amount of walks, protests and vigils should bring them back in contention as a government in waiting. They were caught with their pants down and exposed themselves as pure amateurs. Good riddance.

Now that we have won Roseau North, we should now push ahead in building that hotel in lower Goodwill at the old Public Works site. We need to create more jobs and more opportunities for our people. We need also to seriously look into the The Castaways Hotel in Mero and the Layou River Hotel project in Layou. If we are to increase our hotel inventory in 2023, these two hotels I just mentioned above should be rebuilt into 5 star hotels. Once again, you have my congratulations. Mr. Prime Minister.
