Dr. Thomson Fontaine has been re-elected political leader of the United Workers Party.
News just reaching Dominica News Online (DNO) indicates that during elections held at the UWP delegates Conference now underway in Castle Bruce, Fontaine received 125 votes while his only challenger, Delbert Paris got 65 votes.
Meanwhile, Delbert Paris has been elected deputy leader. He amassed 97 votes to Ronald Charles’ 82. Charles previously held the position of deputy leader.
So far the results for the other executive positions are:
President – Lennox Linton who won over Isaac Baptiste, 124 votes – 58
Vice President – Ronald Charles. He beat Hector John 93 – 82.
General Secretary – Nicolas George who, it appears, has been elected unopposed.
Asst. Secretary – Diane Victor
PRO – Shirley Sabroache. She beat the incumbent Steve Benjamin 82 – 53. The other nominee was
Loftus Durand who got 35 votes.
Treasurer – Kent Joseph
Asst. Treasurer – Ezekiel Bazil
International Secretary – Dr. McDonald Thomas
Trustees – Edison James, Norris Prevost, Ernie Jno-Finn
Who do you think still keeping the UWP relevant? Who still commands a lot of respect from the party’s supporters and the region whenever he speaks? Who does the bulk of the work for the UWP in the long and frequent absences of the good doctor while he attends to business in his second home?
No man is indispensable. However, if Mr. Lennox Linton were to go on a hiatus and take a well deserved rest from the party, things will certainly go downhill rapidly for the UWP. It will open up a huge vacuum which will not be impossible to plug but extremely difficult.
Congratulations, Mr. Fountain, on the extension of your tenure as leader of the UWP. I do think you are a capable leader who can do well for our country. However, you need to start putting in the machinery on the ground in the various constituencies. The majority of the constituencies have no declared caretaker, so who are the supporters going to follow and assist to build further support? Come on, stop this nonsense about caretakers not wanting to be known. If that’s the case, then they are not ready for the task. Leaders must be fearless. All the best.
I like the results but in my opinion Mr Linton should have taken a break from the leadership, since he is not a supporter of Dr Fontaine. I believe Linton and the crew will use Mr Parris to undermine Thomson just like they under minded the current MP from Marigot , which is the reason why we don’t have an opposition leader today.
I can still hear the words uttered by Mr Linton during his resignation in October of 2022, when he refers to members of the party that felt he should resign and he referred to them as “ enemies from within, backstabbers…” I really don’t see how Dr Fontaine is going to move the party forward with a president that doesn’t seem to have his back, loaded with a fan base that will use q95 to attack Thomson. Ask Blessing
Well, the last time I spoke with Mr. Linton (not Brian
) he had no issues working with Thompson and as a matter of fact has done a lot work behind the scenes on behalf of and in support of Thompson. Linton is a statesman and we should never believe he will not do the right thing in keeping with the people’s choice. Unlike the proverbial “Marigot Click”, Mr. Linton understands that UWP is NOT a Marigot Party but rather a DCA party. So, I see no issue with him supporting the people’s choice.
The UWP delegates have spoken. The party has to live with their decision for another year. Does this mean another year of the good doctor captaining in absentia? Are the UWP supporters serious about winning the next election?
You can’t have divided loyalty to two countries and win a general election topping in and out of hometown for long periods.
I want to convey this message to the goodly doctor – “You can’t chew with someone else’s teeth.”
Lead from the front. As leader don’t expect other people to lead for you. That’s A recipe for certain failure. Stop the tomfoolery.
Democracy in action. Love it!!!
I pray that BRIAN will accept the democratic results, put his long tail in his behind and work with the leadership like his big bro with the interest of country first. Brian is NOT the grrrrreat Hon. Linton but can play a vital part if only he would CHILL a bit
…..Bryo you still my boy but CHILLAX Bro
!
But now, let me see Delbert do what he brag about doing starting tomorrow for the protest by brining in the youth. I will keep watching accordingly. CONGRATS Doc and keep on rocking for you are destined to be the next PM whether they like it or not. Of course, Mr. Linton is our next president hands down….PERIOD!
Heartfelt congratulations, Dr. Thomson Fontaine on your re-election as political leader!
You are called and eminently equipeded for such a time as this. No politician in the Caribbean today has such depth of experience in nation-building. Dr. Fontaine is highly regarded for his unparallel and sustained work in the much more difficult South Sudan. More so, we all take pride in his record as an IMF economist, helping to resusitate struggling economies around the globe.
We anticipate that Dr. Fontaine will earnestly extend an olive branch, embracing the youthful energy and confidence Mr. Paris represents. We must build a serious coalition with current Parliamentarians, the Dominica Freedom Party and all stakeholders committed to ending Dominica’s great disappointment – this current unmitigated disaster in governance.
What a good outcome – but what a waste of time! UWP, get your act together!
