DEAR BELLA: I am tired of my gay boss’ wickedness

Dear BellaDear Bella,

Gay seems to be the in thing but not for me. I work at a store in Roseau and my boss’s sexual orientation is well-known.

When I started working with her, I had no clue. I have worked with her for years and she obviously never displayed any of her lifestyle to me.

But these days I’m feeling uncomfortable. She allowed me to take stuff in the store and she told me a few weeks that ago because my salary is small, I shouldn’t pay. I insisted I should. She didn’t accept the payment.

These days she brings me lunch and recently touched by “behind”, saying “round and brown”.

I wanted to vomit. I put her in her place. From then she looks at everything I do. If I am late by one minute, I get warnings. She took what I owed for the stuff from my salary without informing me.

She’s frustrating me. I know it’s because I refused her sick advances.

What should I do? I’ve been working there for years and if I leave I won’t get gratuity owed to me. But I can’t work in an environment like that.

V

Hello V

It is a shame that your boss would use her position to frustrate you. This cannot be easy and it’s hard for anyone to work in an environment like that.

In bigger countries, you would probably get the labour laws to support you and even have your boss prosecuted.

And as much as what I’m going to say might seem reckless; “this is Dominica and it may not go anywhere.”

Clearly, your boss is suffering from an issue of sour grapes and most often than not, when people with power get shamed or cannot have what they want, they use that power to make it hard for those who are responsible. That’s what’s happening here.

But V, you have to ask yourself some serious questions. You need to decide whether your peace is more important than a “small salary”, coupled with a vindictive boss.

If it is, then you know your next move? You claim if you resign you will lose your gratuity, but is it more important than your sanity? Ask yourself.

Best,

Bella

Dear Bella, a person who claim to be responding to such letters must be real read and informed. There are labour laws, a lot of labour laws here in Dominica, you would be surprised. I recently was part of a workshop with the labour commissioner himself, and I think if u were well informed, you would refer this writer to the labour division. So is only in big countries the labour division works? No, u would be surprise at the number of cases employees have eon against their employers. One of the major problems in Dominica is that we do not know our true rights. I myself was overwhelmed at the information I learnt. Sometimes I wonder if this Dear Bella thing is true. Orvis it just sensationalism.

Unfortunately this is part of the government resilience package.
Please try to find another job.
The earth is the Lord and its fullness and all that is within.
He rewards and bless those with clean hands and hearts.
She will try that with the wrong person and the resolve will not be pleasant as yours.

    Good luck!

Cut your lunch break short and use that time to start looking for another job, and when it’s confirmed just leave that one, then you can put that boss on blast

It’s a sad case when an advice given to a sexual harassment rejection turned to victimization is answered by the following statements:

    (i) “In bigger countries, you would probably get the labour laws to support you and even have your boss prosecuted.”

I mean in this day an age; when workers rights is at the forefront of public discussion, the country has no modern laws to tackle situations like this and safeguard the integrity, sanity, dignity and right. So, what is the ministry of employment; the Labour division doing to protect the rights of workers from abuse by vindictive bosses?

But I have to agree with Bella. Recently, I had a matter of employer’s abuse of power and victimization brought up to the labour division and it was a complete waste of time.

(i)) “And as much as what I’m going to say might seem reckless; “this is Dominica and it may not go anywhere.”

This statement is telling to the lax in which the systems in which we operate work and our seeming…

Bella must be the boss with that WEAK advice? Is this the best we can do for a person in a sexual harassment situation? Let me keep reading to see if our readers are as daft as Bella. Meanwhile get your phone camera, recorder etc ready.

V.. i commend you on your move but also will tell you that you are a very stupid person. and my reason in this. the age we living in, no one will believe you and with the advent of technology, you were supposed to have some evidence, record the witch and use it against her. your gratuity would be sure.

Yet again besides, my comment, i still maintain my applaud to you.

    regards

If you are late by 1 minute – you are late. May not be a reason to write to you but you are late.

You claim she allowed to take stuff without paying and now she deducts from your salary for what you owe? I am confused…..

In as much as your don’t make a lot of money, you may want to talk to a lawyer to assess your rights. I have to believe there are laws in Dominica that protects workers against that type of behavior.
