The irony! (Photo by Jeanel Georges)

This photograph represents the essence of irony. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. So, we’ll let the photo speak for itself. Just look at it VERY closely. Some of you will, no doubt, also have something to say!

If you have any photographs or short videos of a situation or activity that disturbs or inspires you, please send it to “CHECK THIS OUT” at DNO and we’ll publish it once it fits the concept of this new feature.

I Think you guys missed it. The box in the front of the photo seemed to be the box that garbage bags are shipped in. It wounded up in the same garbage dump without being in a bag.

None of you guys have it right… The real irony is they place the sign there as an item of garbage also. It has to be picked up by the garbage men along with the other bags, the boxes and old fan stand

The irony indeed. A country consists of all types. This is a typical example. Those people do not care about anyone and their nation. It appears that wherever they are they will litter the place. It is a disgrace and scandal that these people litter and in an area where it is prohibited. It is disgusting and upsetting too see that site. They are surely trying to bring Dominica down to the gutter.
The sign is big enough that those who have eyes to see can read it. It is sheer negligence and total disregard for the Law.
One month in prison is insufficient. Let them serve time and during that time, while incarcerated, they should do community work as cleaning up their mess. It is too bad there is no flogging in Dominica. They deserve a good beating. Those are really nasty people. I wonder what inside their house looks like and how it smells including themselves.
It is time for action. I suggest that the police patrol ‘undercover’ in that area. Do not wear the police uniform when going there but arm yourself with warrants to arrest those perpetrators. This is one way of catching these non caring people.

Do like St. Lucia – introduce Police Zordis & fine the perpetrators! If they cannot pay, make them part of a “chain gang” to clean up the place. There is always somewhere to clean on the island.
Come on Dominicans, since when have you become so sloppy? I remember as a child, the Town Council used to have street sweepers and the place was quite clean. Now they have all the equipment, Roseau smelling like hell! What’s up with that?

    November 19, 2012

    LMFAO!

So not Surprising!… It comes down to many conclusions, one or many of which shall be the fact:
    1. The dumpers are very disgraceful and nasty and have no regard for cleanliness.
    2. The ministry have no measures to MAINTAIN A LEVEL OF STANDARD to obey rules and law.
    3. The Dominica government and law officials are really NOT SERIOUS in maintaining rules! …

Is that in Roseau? This is just ridiculous!

On Saturday, I watched this man pass in front of my house eating a pastry from a plastic bag, when he was through eating he dashed the plastic bag on the ground in front of the neighbours house, I wanted to shout out to him “Amasaye” but I have a small voice I know he would not hear me. Then I thought, “These are the same people who would turn around and say “Roseau salle, Pottersville salle, Govelment packa netwaye”. But if we do things properly the same resources that are wasted to clean up all the wrong we do to the environment could be spend on something else. People think before you throw things outside the bus windows and on the sidewalks and streets.

Lets is look past the garbage and the sign!!
Observe the graffiti on the wall. GUNs drawn on tenperson’s wall. Is this the direction the youths are heading??

The issue of garbage disposal should start in the schools and we should instill in our youths the importance of taking pride in their surrounding.

Parents set a good example for your children and lead by example.

Proper Garbage disposal is suppose to start at home, so when they get to school they arealy have the prope thing to do.

If at home they are making thow the paper and everything on the floor and everybody ealse have to pick it up for them, then this is wrong.

      Parents are the first teachers.

And for the grown folks set an example.

Just like when they build benches around roseau for ppl to sit on.. what did they do? break them and bend them…we can never be better if ppl like the ones who do this kind of TRASH in the picture above keep that kind of mentality of not respecting anything. I have a few pictures just like this in various parts of Dominica where the signs are fully visible and people STILL dump rubbish right infront of them

With great power comes great responsibility.
We need more stuff like this. It speaks volumes about our peoples priorities and ability to manage their own affairs. Its ugly, yes I admit, but having it exposed for the world to see may just be the motivation and incentive we need to do things better, if only for the shear embarassment we would be better for it.

A single picture is indeed worth a thousand words. This one depicts the lyrics of the calypso that everything in Dominica is inside out, up side down and back to front. But I am more comfortable using words to demonstrate the many ironies of ironies in my lovely Dominica.

We name her the Nature Island of the Caribbean but we do not care about the destruction to the environment.

We dispose of garbage every and anywhere, we do promote and incorporate sustainable concepts in our architectural designs of government buildings and offices- not even the designs of our new national palace and the government funded hotels incorporate natural lighting and provide for solar energy. Absolutely no eco-friendly, sustainable thought to our socio, economic and infrastructural development.- Ironies of ironies in my Dominica.

We speak of reducing our carbon footprint and exploring our natural resources to produce more clean energy from hydro and geothermal but we lavishly spend all the savings from the sale of the petro-caribe fossil fuel on the PM’s Red Clinic and for the Minister’s personal benefit- Just part of the ironies of ironies in my Dominica.

We have a Noise Abatement Act with penalties for those who indiscriminately produces noises in unauthorized places and beyond certain times, yet even law enforcement partake in and contribute to the intolerable levels of noise making activities and no one seem able to enforce and implementation the laws as part of the ironies of ironies in my Dominica.

    Physical planning advises against building in certain areas or deforestation of X areas, but those who are close to the politicians build where they want and boldly deforest and ignore the authorities;

We have on our books a Litter Act but guess what- the facilities and resources to enforce the provision of the Act are not in place., just like an Electoral Commission that calls for Voter ID Cards but the politician who oppose ID cards to the one to fund the work of the Commission- Just part of the ironies of ironies in my lovely Dominica.

    Respectfully
