Garbage pick up problem in Canefield

letter to the editorI am a resident of the Canefield Housing Scheme and it is with much concern that I write to you to assist us with this health hazard that we are faced with.

Today marks three weeks and two days that our garbage has not been picked up. With the number of developed and developing health situations that we are challenged and plague with, I believe that our Health Department should make it their business to ensure that every measure is exercise and taken to maintain a clean environment. Knowing that our island is not equipped to deal with most of the health situations we can’t add to the already developed one.

The lane in which that I live is so unsightly that it is a disgrace to even walk or drive through the lane. The neighbors bins are now currently overflowing and therefore they seek a new spot to dump their garage which is very close to the entrance of my dwelling place.

I am very concern for my family and myself as I have exhausted all avenues including; Solid Waste, The Head of the Canefield Urban Council and also placed calls to the Ministry of Health.

I am requesting the assistance of your media link to help us stay safe and healthy.

And now to add insult to injury they are adding even more garbage to what is already there. Overnight the country is being plastered with posters and hoardings at enormous expense that make the place look ugly and will have to be discarded at enormous expense after the election. Ironically they are proclaiming that labour ka twavay. Where is that twavay I would like to know. Can all these posters keep the environment clean or put food on the table? Is that what Nature Isle is supposed to look like? A third-world country with a personality cult? Yes sir, we have money to plaster the place with posters but no money to collect garbage. Malgraysa.

For the town of Portsmouth, just a couple of weeks ago the PM promised to give $250,000.00 to the newly appointed mayor to solve those problems. People of Portsmouth are living in garbage, and the worse part of it all is that dogs takes up the garbage and distributes them from one area to another. From one person yard to another. For those people who can’t support their children, has multiple dogs that they can’t feed, so the dogs are fed from the multiple piles of garbage. The next road match by king dyce should be on Dominica garbage mountains.

We are going to see a lot of these type of letters during the election campaign. Why not show us what you all can and is willing to do to improve our quality of life. The same ones who are complaining are the ones who are contributing to the situation. This is the only way some people know how to fight-dirty. I guess all is fair in love and war. Some people in our society breed on negativity.

Your problem is that the Simeon spends most of his time on his fishing boat and on the animal show. Now election has been called, done expect him to spend any time in the Urban Council’s Office. Canefield, your are on your own. The man cannot even run a two by two office, yet , he want to criticize Mr. Lennox Linton.

All I will say is LAYBAR KAR MALTWAVAY!!!

This is all a result of the failed DLP regime. Cabinet is dissolved so minister just there laughing in your face and giving gifts for vote while the place stinking up. I thought we had a tourism strategy that included waste management? Another reason why DLP have to be kicked in the behind on December 8th.

    Them man dissolve cabinet and refuse to;
    1. Clean canefield garbage
    2. Pay Public Works people their money
    3. Give Civil Service Servants their raise
    4. Give Policemen their raise
    5. Prosecute Seco Seko
    6. Arrest the “easiest door” for firebombing
    7. Partake in elections debate
    8. Telling us where they get all that money for campaign allowing us to conclude that it came from the sale of passports

But, December 8th is drawing neigh and the silent majority will daycarlay them. Change is a MUST!

    Assertive, NOT Aggressive! 8)

The real health hazard I see in Dominica as an outsider from another island, is the burning of rubbish containing dry grass/weeds/and sometime plastic. This a call for lung cancer and asthma for your children, not to mentioned the unhealthy air others have to breathe. Those who do this should be prosecuted!

    • JoJo
      November 7, 2014

Amen brother, burning that rubbish should be subject to a heavy fine. Especially burning that plastic, pvc is very carcenogenic, it gives you cancer people. The worst is the burning of old tires in public. You know what is in there, especially carbon black. That can kill you straight away We are so backward in some aspects and when you complain people are saying you are negative. Well, if making noise about such bad practices is negative I will gladly be negative for the sake of my health.

This is really a disgrace, to the Island of Dominica. We have been known to be the Nature Isles of the Caribbean, and we need to remain that way. I believe this is where the PM should pay much attention, instead of getting occupied with election.
Instead of going around trying to bribe the people for votes, please attend to this garbage problem. people’s health is at stake.

What does a person’s view of DLP have to do with paying Solid Waste it’s dues? That is the sick nation we have become where citizens are made to suffer because they have a difference of opinion and don’t pay homage to DLP. Dominica is not serious about waste management, PERIOD

You must realize that Skerrit have even less respect for you because you accepting everything and staying moumou. This comment reinforces the need for a drastic and urgent change in Dominica. A change in the government is necessary absolutely howe very with a change of government there must be a major effort to elevate the mind and intelligence of our people. In this Era someone who clearly is more educated than my great grand and can access a computer can present such an argument is really cause for concern. “The DLP is paying or providing the money to pay public servants ?” is this innocence? Stupidity? Ignorance? Mischief?.
Whatever it is we have much more than a maladministration issue and there is no way we can catch up with such a high level of blindness blue red or green

we have the same problem in beau bois h/scheme..garbage is pilled up for two weeks now and no truck..that goes for eggleston and giraudel communities as well..will somebody pls help…

    • My take
      November 6, 2014

The pile up of garbage in the Beau Bois, Gommier Stewart, Giraudel and Egglestion communities is appalling. That also goes for the height of the grass on the roadside that makes most of the corners a death trap.

I agree. Garbage is all over Canefield. You do not even have to enter the housing areas. Just stop by Old Mill Cultural Center, there are piles of garbage since after Miss Wob Dwyet Show two weeks ago. Tourist visit Old Mill but this time they are greeted by a HUGE pile of garbage.

Don’t worry, all that will go into the report of Carnival cruise line when they make up their mind whether to return to Dominica for good or not. Such shortsighted management logic of the government and Skerrit bragging about his leadership qualities. That is not even a joke, it is sick.

The heading should read, “LACK OF GARBAGE PICKUP IN DOMINICA”. Imagine two days ago was Community Day of Service, and it is appalling to see the amount of garbage waiting to be picked up in Portsmouth.

But all night they putting up posters and billboard. I wonder if there was a garbage truck in any of the three containers of freeness that came for the PM last week….hmmmm.

I share your pain and concern but you must come to Portsmouth to see the garbage in the middle of the town. Now this is the Portsmouth that vote the Labor Party sun or rain.
I have no intension of arginalizing your plight, in fact my intension is to join you in your cry for help in a time where the sitting government is throwing money around to buy votes whereas the basic requirements like the hospital service,, environmental health services, cost of living salary adjustment, salaries for public works etc are all suffering .

    November 6, 2014

I can confirm this. I am also a resident of Canefield. Upper Canefield too be exact. We have been faced with sporadic pick ups of our garbage and this has become a massive embarrassment. There is sometimes garbage piled up at the roadsides because residents put out their garbage on the designated days and the truck does not pass!. It is sometimes seen on the flat but does not come up the hill. Why?? we are asking. The authorities make no statement, make no apology, yet still WE HAVE TO PAY FEES….

Please, can someone look at this urgently, and we don’t want some stupid comment that that is a one-off incident, and it does not happen all the time, because WE KNOW BETTER!! Address the issue and let us know what is going on. It is not healthy, and furthermore we have tourists being transported along this route and they are seeing garbage piled on the sides of the roads..SMH. Please do something about this….

    Thank you.

Lady I symphatise with you. How can a government claim that it is ready for ebola when it can not not even manage its waste disposal service? Go and see in Africa what helps spread infections like that. It are insanitary living conditions.
