Prime Minister Skerrit, please debate Mr. Linton

letter to the editor

Editor’s note: Dominica News Online has been informed that the following letter has been sent to Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit.

Dear Sir,

It is my intention to vote in this upcoming election for the very first time. I am 45 years old, however I do want my vote to be counted. I have been listening to both you and Mr. Linton and have still not decided – I am on the fence waiting to be convinced.

I am humbly approaching you to honor a debate. This would give persons like me information as to the reason why I should cast my vote. The bible says, “The people perish for lack of knowledge”.  I want to make informed decision not one based on emotions.

I am writing this solely from a private citizen’s point of view. I am not politically motivated in anyway nor am I looking for anything from anyone. It is my right and duty to vote but it your responsibility to inform me as to why I should vote for any political party or person.

Please don’t deny me and others like me this great opportunity to make an informed decision – otherwise we might be discouraged to vote.

I hope you receive this with LOVE!!!

Sincerely,

Marian Jno-Finn

Private Citizen

I wonder why Dominicans want to equate Dominican politics with American politics! We are light years apart, people. First of all, we don’t have financial resources to do some of the things you are expecting. Furthermore, our constitution doesn’t make any mention or provision for any debate among aspirants to the Prime Minister´s chair. So the sitting Prime Minister is under no obligation to participate in any debate of sorts. If he does, it his personal choice. Finally, I think you are being rather unfair. Dominica has had six Prime Ministers before Skerrit and it was never an issue, so why all of a sudden it has become an issue? What is there to debate? Each party has its privately owned radio station to present its plans and vision to the public… what more debate do you want? Please get real!

Cowardice ask the question: is it safe?
Expediency ask the question: is it politic?
Vanity ask the question: is it popular?

But the conscience ask the question: is it RIGHT?

And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic nor popular. One must take it simply because it is RIGHT – Martin Luther King jr.

There is no obligation to vote, it is a democratic privilege. If you do not like what you hear from either side you always have the right to abstain, not to cast your vote at all.

I’m reading these comments and I’m baffled by the venom of our people towards Ms Jno-Finn. What’s wrong with a debate. I am a 29 year old who has never voted. Just registered a few months ago to do so; and i still haven’t decided who I am voting for as yet. I honestly don’t listen to the politics on the radio and the corner. It’s all quite ridiculous to tell you the truth. A debate would be a great tool for those of us out there who are not politically affiliated. A chance to hear the real issues and real plans, instead of what ‘they say’, precisely because a lot of us refuse to listen to the they-sayers. So, on with the debate I say.Where’s the harm?

    Please give me a break..
The bible refers to knowledge from GOD and it have nothing to do with man..
    Man’s knowledge is foolishness..Know that..
On the other hand I see no need for a debate..The politicians say one thing and does another..And that’s worldwide..They’re part of the global problem today..Haven’t you’ll learn that as yet…

Hello Marian Jno Finn, you I give your flowers while you are alive, YOU HAVE GUTS. I see DNO is quick to publish your foolishness but they yet to present the story on Linton and his trip and activities in Las Vegas. That debate thing is not going to distract us from the issue of the kind of individual people like you would like to have sitting in the PM chair. Linton’s entire Radio Talk Show years has been to destroy the PM he enters the political arena and he continued. I have not heard any of you ask for a debate between an elected Opposition Leader and the PM never, but you think that a man who represents no one in parliament, one who refused to step into the Parliament as a replacement for Isidore, one who is proven to be a cheat, one who along with Clayton Shillingford sought to destroy our nation by submitting false information to the Committee on Hemispheric Affairs etc deserves a debate. Marian dear, you not serious but by the way, I never heard you when he called women prostitutes, called Ministers of DLP Rapists, neither did I hear you on the Phtotocopy speach issue, but now you come out! Well we the people who support the DLP which is 18-3 in Parliament does not need a debate to know where we stand in this coming General,
Elections. We do not assess our PM on his ability to debate but on his track record. By the way have you written to Linton asking him to make public his Academic Qualification and Employment history? When you have done that you can ask about a debate in the meantime I ask DNO to return your ill advised correspondence to the sender. And of course you are not political just someone who at your age needs a debate to decide who you voting for, thats the most foolish thing I have ever read from one who should know better. shame on you. hahahahahahaha, thanks fr the laugh.

Admin: DNO has prepared and will be publishing a story on the latest allegations against Linton but we first wanted to ensure that it was balanced as we’re certain that readers like you would wish to hear both sides.

What is the big news about a private citizen having dinner with a few friends. The man was not caught naked in the presence on a woman. Keep on digging for dirt, that wont put money in the pockets of Dominicans.

      • September 23, 2014

Nope, the man Las Vegas strip is not news worthy. Why u doh take out pictures of your PM overseas and ask him for value for money every time he returning empty handed? Why you want DNO to spread propaganda for you and help you with the Jong strategy? The Jong strategy will hang Allu just now.

That nonsense will not put food on our tables or stop the economic downturn that our country has been experiencing under the Dominica Latrine Party.

Now that’s another thing which the Uwp government should implement when in office that there Must be a debate between the politics leaders before election . The other two are there must be a fix election date and the prime minister whoever it is should have only two terms as prime minister .
Dictators do such; they don’t want to debate their plans against those who disagree with them . It is clear as daylight skerrit is a dictator. He think his actions and words are gospel and no one wrong should disagree with him. In a democracy you have debates, leaders arguing their plans before the populace before elections. In parliament it is always the ‘yays’ because they are in the majority but if there are debate between the parties before the election then the voting population has a chance to choose who they want to lead them over the next five years.
A leader seeking to be pm of any country should be able to articulate his plans. If he can’t well he isn’t fit to be pm.

The mere fact that this lady has made herself known, might be too revealing for some , and it shows that some part of her history , culture and traditions ,pertaining to the political field has somehow been disrupted and stripped and have openly exposed how the intellectual bar , and competitive spirit has dropped unlike the past . Undoubtedly , many hurtful and indecent and sometimes untrue stories or previous politicians were told in the past , but yet they honored the masses , recognized how they started, and chose to debate . Thanks for being brave enough to disclose your name , in your attempt to magnify the cry and wishes of many your own people .

Parry, I would advise the Prime Minister to have a debate with Mr. Lennox Linton. His acceptance would put to rest the notion that he fears Mr. Linton because of his eloquence, also, his ability as a quick thinker in terms of handling and analyzing situations with great comfort. Being aware of his university education, therefore, Mr. Linton being considered an uneducated man by himself and his peers, a debate, should be as easy as a walk in the park on a Sunday morning.

Debates between the ruling PM and the Opposition Leader has never been in the political culture of Dominica. Why are some people bent on introducing it now? Is it is to prove how eloquent of a speaker LL is? Eloquence is not all. I guess the requester of the debate never voted in her 45 years because there has never been a debate and she could never decide how she should cast her vote.

It’s all a political ploy to the disadvantage of the PM. Those wishing for a debate are only interested because of the PM’s disability – he stammers/ stutters. Therefore, because the opposition has an ability to speak smoothly, articulate, has eloquence, annunciates words more prolifically than the PM, they think it is a valid reason for a debate. They are not interested in a genuine debate; they are more interested in sound bites. My choice would be to vote someone with more experience right now than a novice with a storied past.

Now, I am a 20 year old female who has never voted before and who is confused as to which party to vote for.. Keep That In Mind

But, I mean for grown people who want to justify Skerrit not wanting to debate Linton just because they called Roosevelt (as I Quote) a “Rapist, Corrupt, Thief, French man, Dictator, Liar, Fake, Greedy” then you need some more growing up to do!! BOTH parties are throwing insults at each other!! Barack Obama went through his fair share of all sorts of people insulting him (by both voters and the people he had to debate against as well). But guess what, he still debated!!
Because it wasn’t about whose feelings were more hurt.. it was about getting your ideas and future plans across and showing people that no matter what!! YOU ARE A LEADER! Tell Skerrit to come better than that.

As a community minded person I am surprised that you have not made your mind on whom you believe is better able to lead the country. After all, can you see anything that serves to show 15 years of development in Dca other than the road from Roseau to P/ Mouth via the west coast?

Now let us look closer to home… Castle Bruce! Can you see anything Johnno is doing to improve the lives of the citizens? At least Issac is trying to do something as a private citizen but Johnno is stuck in the larboo below I-low. Even Column or Wyyet (May their soul RIP) would have done better as parlrep for C/Bruce. We all know Skerro will NOT debate Linton or Thompson for that matter because the man does not have a clue.

Last election he come Gluglu and give out phones and money. Even Alan had phone playing heavy until the minutes rune out and he could not top-up. So if that does not tell you DLP is incapable, take a look at C/Bruce and see the misery on people faces, houses falling, no sense of belonging among the youth. Johnno is a really nice guy but best he stay in the church groups because hat where he belong. He doh man ask Skerro for help. Watch the Reunion Center in Seequee! You of all people should know better than be “sitting on the fence”.

Debates are always taking place in Parliament so you have enough to make your decision to vote.
By the way,you have already make up your mind and you know who you are voting,so your little tac tic won’t work.Pure politics….

The individual made their request, which to me is a logical one. The best way to convince the people who really has their head on straight, is by having a debate. There are no debates taking place in parliament so I dunno know what you’re talking about. A fair and informative debate is what we need. Stop being a troll and let the person’s words move.

Poor Fast n Furious- people like me get furious at your reasoning for not encouraging a debate in Dominica; yet I am sure a lot of people like you sat in Dominica infront of our tv sets to see Obama and Mc Cain debate in 09 and then in the recent US elections we watched the presidential and vice presidential debates yet still we are saying no to debates in Dominica – what a shame eh; I wonder if people should now tell their kids that they should not participate in school debates because whatever the topic there is a lot surruonding the topic being discussed out there – so there is no need to debate ; doesn’t that sound foolish to you?

Tell that to people in other democratic states in the world. like the American public and see if they wouldn’t laugh at you.- My friend debates have a lot to do with the outcome of elections, they can make or break a candidate. Have you ever notice the ratings after a political debate? Have you ever heard the critical analysis coming from the various publics after a debate – my friend debates are extremely healthy and important and failure to see the benefit speaks volumes of your level of intelligence.

    September 22, 2014

While I understand your concern to ask for a debate between our two main political leaders, I disagree with most of your reasons. 1.How could you be listening to both Lennox and Skerrit and still not convinced? No doubt Skerrit has given us ABSOLUTELY NO REASON to vote him for a third term. Right on the other hand, Mr. Linton has made his case loud and clear. His vision is well articulated and he has assembled an honest team that is ready and willing to deliver Dominica from the bondage of Skerrit. 2. The fact that you are asking Skerrit for a debate just as thousands of us are, including Mr. Linton, should be a clear NO VOTE FOR SKERRIT. 3. To even suggest that if Skerrit denies your request for a debate might result in you and others getting discouraged to vote is sad. After all, why should you hurt yourself and Dominica because Skerrit is doing everything under the sun to deny us a debate, which really is making his vision known to us?

There is absolutely no need for a debate the facts as presented by both leaders and teams are clear even for the blind to see. If lennox wanted a debate he would have come into the house at the earliest opportunity. He choose not to afraid of the reaching arms and teeth of the IPO commission. But then again monelle presents better than spags john maybe that’s what lennox reasoned all along. From what has been presented who is clearly the better leader a now almost 15 year old politician and decade long PM or decade long unemployed, unemployable man. What’s worst is that there are professionally trained men up to the doctorate level because of their weakness of character allows this novice to lead them……

Thanks so much for your support. I am not hiding behind a fake name or telephone lines to make my point ( I even gave my email address and cell number), because I am convinced about what I am writing about. When people like Lasana Sekou, Muta Baruka , Fabian Badejo, Rhoda Arrindell Ruby Bute, Aime Caesar and many other Caribbean nationals teach me to stand up for what I believe and be bold to put my name and face to it- you can’t help but to stand up or something or fall for anything. To be bashed by those that are short sighted or politically motivated – is no surprise. For them keeping a bold fold over our eyes is the best way forward- even if this means they too are blind too, but there are some of us who demand to see -it is our God given right. It is not enough to just hear both leaders from their own settings or podium – they must face each other on neutral grounds and be asked questions.

I am more than a political colour or party – I seek to remain above that.

I think we should start a petition drive

Dear Miss, Finn after 45years being on this earth I would hate to think you have no idea as to what transpired is this country over the years as to where we were to where we are now. From 2000 when this DLP government took over it was met with a broke country we took the bitter pill that was prescribed to us, we stabilize the sliding slope we was on then here comes the world market crashing in 08 we still maintained to keep the country stable, then the one thing we were blessed with our ground produce ended up with diseases we spent millions on that. We made decisions from the get go we broke ties with Taiwan and went with China which I think was the best move ever done in this country, we were bashed by MR. Linton and the UWP for doing so, to date Linton and the UWP has never backed this government on any initiative taken over the years not one, well the only one the then leader Edison James like was when we gave him extra money on his salary. The new leader has seen it fit to educate himself on matters that is detrimental to our way of life, he and his colleagues has put us in bad light with lies as to how this country is done which after they posted their report they had to take it down because they were misled. I have been debating for the last ten years, if you are 45years old that means you are older than I am so you for one knows what it was like before and now. Am sure you would say you have seen more done than ever before ie road network, school programs, infrastructural programs, water project, care for the elders. When the DLP was in opposition they had a track record of showing things that was done for the people of this country to date UWP has no track or field to show the ran on not one. Moving forward we are looking at the international airport, we are in talks with the Marina project in Portsmouth which was designed together with the Moroccan hotel, Portsmouth is the place that we are going to build up where the jobs will come from since it has not been developed like town. Had Linton educated himself on issues that will take us forward and the people that’s in waiting I would be the 1st to debate him but if he is not bringing any thing new it will just be the same old, we also has the geothermal project going. With all that said I will not debate issues with someone who does not see it fit to help promote my country who rather choose to bring it down. Miss Finn it’s surprising to see you say you are not politically affiliated, I have seen your posts on FB and on DNO giving your dissatisfactions with me and the DLP I have never seen you said anything negative to or about the now Leader or UWP, I will take my chances to run on that progress report, I will say to you and all other Dominicans to take a look around and vote what you think is rite. PS I can only educate a novice and not debate a novice. Yours Truly RS.

      September 22, 2014

fool, you all are looking at an international airport , uwp had started working on one, but still u saying uwp left no track record ,let me remind you ,labour has 15 years in power and you are more hungry now than when they came in

      • real possie
        September 23, 2014

@ Truth, you speak of the international airport that was going to be done by UWP, did they leave any finances in the treasury to do that? did you not hear that the placement of the UWP airport could not have worked? I heard they said the streams and rivers would have made no sense to do that kind of work, then there’s the problem of the runway that would not be seen at the altitude that it should be seen. I for one has nothing against a debate, but Linton told the world he is a novice and from that time to now he has made no stride in changing that status the blunders I have seen his made from the day he said he’s a novice to now has not changed. Linton did not surround himself with people that can help him in any sense of the matter, case in point you cant tell Nationals to boycott the National parade by the children of the country. Then you have them being hell bent on bringing down one man and they will stop at nothing to do so, for instance COHA these people had to remove that black eye they reported on the country. My question to Miss. Jo Finn is now that you know you are not going to have a debate what’s next? if I was in your place since I know what I want to hear both of these people speak on I would go to Linton since he’s calling for a debate and ask him to speak of my concerns.
        (1) What is your stance on the one China policy?
        (2) How can you reduce all these taxes and still be able to keep the country afloat? when the IMF clearly states that it’s the same taxes you are willing to cut is what’s keeping us afloat, what will replace those monies? I know you said before that the construction sector would help in that sense, but will a mass of people start constructing rite away to sustain that loss of the taxes?

There is so much more but will not go anymore, to those who might think of me as a fool there’s the reason I don’t think Linton is ready yet when his team is saying we will take a hit. In this day and age if we take any kind of hit it will take a long, long time to get back, I think Dominicans are educated enough to know that trying to swallow another bad pill will bury us. In closing I will say again the PM can educate Linton as a self proclaimed novice and not sit there and try to debate measures and issues that he seems to be lacking.

    Hello Marian,

How would you like to walk on stage, shake hands with someone who has consistently and without fail decried everything thing that you do. You can and have done nothing good. Your every action is fraught with ridicule. You are a thief and a corrupt person of the highest class. You are even a rapist or a supporter of rapist.

How would it rub off on you to meet such an individual face to face when that individual has never for one moment flinched or express any measure of regret for de-robing you of your dignity and your best efforts at bringing development to this country in every way possible. I know PM Skerrit has to be a statesman in every way, but he is only human. He can take so much. That has to be the basis for any consideration to a debate. The cordialities must not be only be for a TV audience in the race towards a general elections.

    • Just Thinking
      September 22, 2014

The debate should not be about personality. It should be about the plans fo rthe development of the country. It gives an opportunity for the 2 sides to be asked the same questions and respond accordingly. It would also look at the ability of both leaders to give unrehearsed responses. It would say alot in the global world we now live, that we have a leader who can command his audience by responding by the snap of a finger. I think the young people would really learn and be able to make a more decisive decision as to who they want to lead them for the future if there was a debate.

      • Just Observing
        September 24, 2014

Am I to think that to be a good debater, an eloquent orator, an excellent communicator (plagiarism or no plagiarism) is sufficient basis for determining a country’s leader? Am I also to deduce from your pen, that a leader or an aspiring leader who has a speech defect and unable to woo listeners with eloquence and great oratory (with or without a plagiarized text) would be unfitted for leadership here. Is that how we should decide on Dominica’s future leadership?

Well, I am reminded of the “crooks” and “criminals” of this world. They come mostly well dressed, immaculate looking, sweet smelling, fine jewelry, well shined shoes and with the fanciest of talk. Their command of the English language is without doubt flawless – never at a loss for a convincing word of expression. Their product offering is by far the best on the plannet, they promise. They are totally able to maintain the attention of those who wish to listen for hours. These fine “talkers” are adept at making promises that cannot be easily questioned or doubted. At the end of the conversation, many an unsuspecting soul is deprived, more swindled of their hard earned money, retirement benefit, Trust Fund reserves or even their sanctity. More often than not, that is the sum total of the work of a smooth talking salesman pitching his commodity.

Which senior citizen relying on a retirement package that is unable to meet his/her needs would not want a package of assistance that would allow for the creation of a surplus to start a “trust Fund” for their grand child. Alas often enough, after the check has been signed, surrendering the small retirement package for a simple PROMISE OF A BIGGER AND BETTER PACKAGE” the salesman disappears.

In Dominica the commodity is – transparency in government, openness in government, anti-corruption, high moral and ethical values and the list goes on. Who among us would not want our leaders to be pregnant with these virtues and or morality. The exception is that these virtues does not seem to extend to the private lives of those smooth talkers who takes off to St. Martin. Resurfaces in New Jersey, then Atlanta and on to the Las Vegas Strip for a breakfast meeting at 4:30 am to discuss among other things tourism opportunities for an unsuspecting Dominica.

WE should demand that our leaders engage in a political debate that touch on issues of importance o Dominic not resort to be on a podium and bash each other ,.
