photo of the dayBefore the advent of modern concrete buildings, dwellings like this old uninhabited structure, located in the Antrim Valley, were seen practically all over Dominica.

Antrim is located between Roger and Springfield Estate.

alas you’re making Dominicans in CT look bad. I hope by CT you meant Charlotte,North Carolina. Sakway toneh man. Surely you should be able to write a more coherent sentence and observe the basic grammar rules even if you are attempting to sound “local.” ROSEAU, I etc

One thing for sure, termites keep far from these long ago built structures, and if for some reason the shingle cladding has to be removed, the wood underneath, is almost like the day it came out of the lumberyard.
A very nice capture Ras Mo.

I find it amazing that people have fond memories of these hovels. Isn’t the reason why we dont build those anymore that they were not the best places to live – not water or indoor plumbing?

I was not raised in one of those and I am very happy for it. I just cannot view these shacks favorably. If that is what people could afford, then so be it, but how can one have fond memories of a place where, if you had to use the toilet, you had to squat in the bushes?

Sorry guys, I don’t share your enthusiasm.

Sorry with regards to your arrogance, these houses are still built in some parts in USA, Australia and England. Please go and do some research, then you should view them as beauty of nature. Get out some more and explore the world.

And many of those many many wooden houses that I’ve seen in the USA, are not as well built as those in many parts of the Caribbean, and certainly will never last as long as the one in the photo.

Jimi i respect your opinion. in these shacks there was much love and happiness. we cared for each other more. these days everyone has there own space i.e. room and love for each other is the farthest thing from our mind. but in those days in the shacks at 5:00 p.m. everyone could be accounted for and if someone was not in by the stipulated time the mother or father would easily know. i enjoyed those days without water and flushing toilet….these are sweet and beautiful memories for me sleeping on the floor on beddings and i enjoyed making our floor bed with beddings….

        Loving Dominica,
If you love not having running water and a toilet, I guess you still do your business outside?

That was the type of house being built over one hundred (100) years ago.Imagine it is still standing! No one lives in it but the termites are still unable to throw it down. These days any furniture one buys, especially from outside of the island, get nfested with termites so fast, they do not last for 5 years. This picture will always be appreciated by anyone who love antiques. This house would look great in the yard of a museum. You should visit our lovely Nature Island to see more of these houses. If I were an artist I would paint a picture of this house.

Are you some kind of idiot. I’m 16 so never came close to anywhere near something like this, but can understand how someone could find it nostalgic. Respect people’s emotions.

Self made IDIOT. You do not even have the understanding of what happiness is. I was not raised in one, but, I can understand the love that was shared in those houses. These are not hovels, they are homes. Home is where the heart is. A big house and running water does not bring love to anybody, these are comforts. Love comes from people’s hearts, those with love, and a conscience.

In these houses there used to be lots of love, together and appreciation for life and each other…the night rest would be warm, because everyone would curl up together on the floor on bedding and cover with one sheet! loving this pic, great memories.
