Avanelle Shillingford Colaire, who happens to be a relative and friend is Dominican just like you and me. Like some Dominicans we are of European and African decent and some of us are born light, some of us are brown and some us are dark. So all this ignorant talk makes me sick. Dominicans long ago and those of us who lived in Roseau were sensible and less ignorant. Dominicans need to educate themselves instead putting their total interest in Material things and thinking that ther have arrived. Education can bring a lot further….it is so annoying. There has never been a white carnival queen and even if there was as long as the person was Dominican, what difference does it make.

Usually, I like to burst out laughing, unable to contain myself when I read the crap, some folks write: our people are just too funny, I can’t laugh tonight.

Nevertheless, I submit there has never been a white Dominica born Carnival Queen; now there was a time as everything else; when a dark complexion person could not even compete for the crown; thus one had to be more or less mulatto, the color had to be like someone of those Trotter girls who lived up there (and I am not saying where), or at least very fair in complexion!

And; I do not mean like an Carib Indian girl; and mind you they had to be form a bourgeoisie family!

The darkest to capture the crown in Dominica, becoming the Dominica queen; and then went on to become the Caribbean Queen, the same year, is the one and only: Kathleen Telemaque, formally of 76 River Street; she also served as an nurse at Princes Margaret Hospital, prior to immigrated to Toronto where she is still involved in the nursing profession, only at a higher level, she is head of an intensive care unit in a hospital in Toronto.

It is laughable for anybody to entertain the idea that the woman in that picture is ” a white person.”

I hope the pervert who commented on the previous photograph saying he has not seen any woman in (PP) shorts; and I refuse to repeat such degrading phrase, rather I shall say Daisy Dukes shorts, might be fuming from his mouth by seeing a Dominica woman in the 1960’s in a bathing suite.

What happen to the days when women bath in the Roseau river naked, and not get raped?

Anyway, crack cocaine, and marijuana was not introduced to Dominica, few women smoke cigaret, then but we all drank we white rum, and brown cast rum, filled with acid even little me would fire up me fir water when be adult parents was not looking oui!!

If whoever the pervert was around that time he might be still incarcerated for the crime of rape.

Well Mr. Perverted, in the 1960’s our beautiful women did not exposed their precious bodies as such, except those who chose to bath naked in the river, however, it was very common to see women dressed up in what was known to us as peddle-pushers, and they looked quite attractive in them, until the jeans began to take over.

Finally, someone mentioned Jennifer Hostine, that reminds me of MC Harrigan who died last year, who set a trend when Jennifer came to Dominica, when he interviewed her his last question to her was: Miss World “will you marry me?”

I will not state her answer, but that trend spread across the Caribbean, hence when Kathleen was crowned in Antigua, the MC who interviewed her posed the same question to her.

Okay I am looking forward to the thumbs down, and some head bashing and name calling oui!

Many of these replies take me back 43 years ago, in 1970,while living in the UK, when Jennifer Hostein of Grenada was crowned Miss World.I thought that, since then , we had moved past this skin colour thing.

I remember also. I remember that she visited Dominica, while I was attending a teachers’ summer workshop.

I did not see her personally, but one male teacher who saw her, came to the workshop and complaining that she was not pretty.

He looked at me and said to the whole group that i was prettier than her. Well I believed him, because I was a young beautiful thing also, at that time.

      • February 1, 2013

And you failed your exam after the summer workshop oui!

        Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!

After that you ran away to Canada, an I hear you doh can go back DA eh.

Let me see how you going to respond to this.

Let me clarify my comments about the picture looking like my aunt from Goodhope. My point was that every other person in Goodhope, San Sauveur or Atkinson looks like that person in the picture. So for readers to actually suggest that this person is white in my view was total ignorance. All you have to do is look at the population in Dominica and you will lots of Dominicans that look like that. They are fair skinned, but not White.

You need not scream ignorant, a simple historical fact checking would teach you that even though she may not be “WHITE” in the sense of the term as we loosely use it in Dominica, these pageants were restricted to women of a “certain class and skin tone. To defend it, is a reflection of your own igorance on Dominicas’ history.

HHMMMMM i guess black ladies weren’t classified, beautiful enough, to participate in those days…

what is so funny about back then, is how people of fair complexion or of white heritage, actually thought they were ‘above’ and better than the black person… it’s so sad to see this still goes on in our culture… aye shabin!!!!… does being ‘shabin’ makes a woman more beautiful… and the women who carry on the name like a badge, f.b profile name etc etc…

    • Just reading
      January 31, 2013

the way you think implies that if you were of fair complexion you would think you are above and better than people of dark complexion… listen this race thing goes way back and it will never change… since people categorize each other on the color of their skin and not their ethnic background.. it stuck! and with people like you in society still doing that it will never change… so what if a young lady decides to call herself shabine… that’s a dominican word.. stupes people like you are way too sensitive

    January 31, 2013

lol. look how people are dressed for carnival. the only reason this is funny is because its sooooo not the norm nowadays. Body parts must be exposed for people to feel the “carnival spirit”. On another note, though the costume could pass for the time (’60-’63), the vehicle is poorly decorated.

  30. Shameless
    January 31, 2013

Those were the good old days when young men carried their pants above the waist with belts and young women made sure that their taytay or other sensual body parts were not the object of any pervert’s affection with very little skin showing. Those were the good old days.
