Negative critism of our own people will get us no where. That gentleman on the roof with his civilian clothing is a FIRE OFFICER, sworn to risk his own life to save lives and property from further destruction of fire. Fire officers are never off duty mind you. He is just one of many one of many officers that came to assist his brothers to contain the fire. We should learn to think and analyse all angles before we start putting down each other. Great job man!!

come on people >>>i dont think the officers would allow an untrained person to put his or her self in that position it would only complicate the job .from the looks of the photo u can see that they are communicating meaning they seem to know him .i personally would think he is an off duty oficer >>his low center of gravity on the roof also makes me realise that he knows what he is doing >>>
i like the coment that points out the difference in the officers uniforms it would really look better if they were all the same i guess the people responsible for those matters could look into it >.good job officers and mister helper who ever you are .fie spreads quickly and the situation could have been much worst ..just think the bottom floor business could function next day …

Osmosis, regardless of whether he is the fire chief, no building or property is worth a human life. He is not in proper gear, therefore he ought not to be there, period. If he is indeed an officer and he wanted to help, he should have put on proper protective gear in case he got into difficulty. if that had happened, the other officers may have had to put themselves in danger to rescue him. It is not worth it.

The criticism was not meant to be a negative comment, we were just pointing out the obvious. They can do better and they should do better in the future. There is too much laxity in exercising safe practices in Dominica.

Some people see things differently. Good thought and comment.
Please do not make me laugh which is just what I am doing. Only in Dominica you say? He is a brave man. The firemen do not mind. Probably they do not know enough about safety. They need to be better trained. Anyway it is a good photo, firemen at work.

Oh please, would he go to jail if he had to rescue a child in a burning house. He would be a hero. Think before you post.

Or an adult for that matter. Some people react spontaneously. If he were successful, he would surely be considered a hero. This has happened to many people in different countries. In the interim some of them have lost their lives.
However, those who criticize are not wrong. This is what they saw and they commented according to it. The firemen and this man would have to give an explanation why he was assisting without proper fire-fighting attire. Anyway, do not hold it against them. The help must have been well-meant. For safety reasons, they must ensure that unauthorized people should not assist without proper gear.

The other question is, why did the fire fighters allow this guy to get on the roof in the first place. Why are people even allowed in the immediate vicinity? Should they not cordon off the area to protect the public? For professional people they ought to know better and put safety first.

The guy is reckless, but I think the fire department needs to look at their practices.

it may seem strange to see the young man in Black and white like this, however he is a fire man and he took an oath which states: service before self. This man was not on duty but found himself helping in the situation. I was a witness at the time of this fire and this man really worked hard to get the fire under control. He deserves an award for his hard work, even when he wasn’t on duty!!good work my boy!!

He could have helped in another way. This is not something that the public should see because you give the impression that it is a safe thing to do and really it is not. Service before self doesn’t mean compromising safety

Great job by our fire fighters and those who render their assistance thank God no one was injured or loose their life. But take hid that if such a fire had started in one of those Getto villages we have in Dominica we all know them so no name no warrant can we imagine the problem those fire fighter would encounter just trying to get to the scene of the fire? Hope we learn our lesson before its too late.

    April 28, 2011

It’s amazing the number of inferences one can make form this dramatic photo. It would look so professional if all D/ca brave firemen would wear one homogeneous outfit. one is decked in an American specs uniform whilst the other has a British one.

Btw. nobody suggested that the firemen were about to rescue a stranded man.

    April 28, 2011

You can help but you see the first responders in their fire- resistant clothing, and you in your civilian clothes want to partake? People SAFETY FIRST, because you then might become a statistic through not having the right tools for the emergency!

    • Homeboy
      April 28, 2011

Also the firefighters need SCBA ( self contained breathing apparatus- of course they need to be trained and quantitatively fit tested).
