DPC POETRY: She Wishes for Evanescence

dpc logoEditor’s note: Due to the circumstances of Friday April 19, 2013, Dominica News Online (DNO) did not publish DPC Poetry. We now present the latest edition of this collaborative feature of DPC (Domnichen Poetic Circle) and DNO.

Darkness spreads across the room
Her mind is in a state of gloom
She feels like the rain only falls on the windows of her room
She wishes for evanescence.

Then that knock on her bedroom door
Frightens her and she begins to cry “please no more”
Then that monster comes in and beats her with his venomous snake
She wishes for evanescence.

He rapes her!
Brutally beats her when she refuses to conform to his request
She screams out “I will claim my dignity!”

I pray the wrath of God falls on him like lava escaping from the vent of a volcano
I say this decisively!
She wishes for evanescence.

The foul language and profanity that he uses is unheard off:
Bitch, slut, worthless piece of s**t you name it
Damn! This dude done drag this little girl down to the pit
Robbed her of her innocence
She wishes for evanescence.

Like a baby crying out for its mother’s breast
She screams out to God and asks him to give her body rest
This man, this monster, this bloodthirsty mess
Is sucking the life out of her
Stealing that little girl’s happiness
Like a vulture scavenging on animal’s flesh
She wishes for evanescence.

Her pride gone with the wind
Desires no longer exist
His insensitivity, arrogance and insolence
Causes her to fear him
She despises mortality
Into the unseen world she searches for spirituality
Thoughts of suicide bring her to insanity
She wishes for evanescence.

But he doesn’t give up

He wants her to fall to her knees and worship him
Like he’s some god

”I bow down to no man” she says and that upsets him
In the outside world she is inconspicuous
Her judgment she receives as she walks through the streets
Thousands of eyes fixed upon her

Fingers pointed straight at her
At that moment
she wishes for evanescence

Tears roll down her battered cheeks as a sense of worthlessness spread through her body
Like venom from a snake
Laughter falls like a lyrical curse on her ears as she begins to shake
They don’t know what she is going through- to them her life doesn’t matter
The thought that no one cares pierces her heart like a dagger
She wished she had in her possession the sands of time
But happiness is not just something you can buy
So she just wishes for evanescence

She wishes for evanescence because
She still believes in something
She has tied green ribbons on the chest of youth
And is still searching for truth
She has seen happiness in a place where no one has ever seen it before
In due time she knows her sadness will be no more
She wishes for evanescence

Sad but true about some young women in our society who face abuse of all types daily. Inthe poem the victim’s hope of overcoming is promising but the reality is that our society needs to hear & respond to those cries.
