DPC POETRY: Waitukubuli

‘Watikubuli’, that was her name
before the so-called discoverers came
and claimed to have discovered her
on a Sunday – Thus the name, ‘Dominica’.

Wai’ Ti Kubuli
Tall is Her Body:
The true meaning of the isle so named.
Yes, that was her name before the Spaniards came!

She stands between the two French isles
with glamour confidence and style –
Guadeloupe northwest, Martinique southeast.
A land filled with worth: Waitukubuli, she is blessed!

Magnificent are her hills; her valleys are lush;
bathed in crystal waters pure and plush,
majestic trees her forests do embrace,
her people are gentle and full of grace.

Her ocean waves rolling and roaring loudly,
sometimes tenderly, or otherwise forcefully,
kiss her sandy and rocky shores.
Many a pounding they do endure!

Her land is rich with bananas, yams and dasheen,
forests with an abundance of manicou, agouti and mountain chicken,
rivers full of veeyo, dormez and quibish
to create an elegant and mouth watering dish.

Her people have countless tales to tell,
stories remembered by many so well.
Of olden days and times gone before,
these will capture your imagination for sure!

Dominica, nature isle with beauty and splendour
esteemed by your people and others you lure
to your land pristine, safe and unblemished,
Waitukubuli is your name, unique and cherished!
