Dominicans have me calling fruits by the wrong names all over the world. People never seem to know what I’m talking about when I tell them the name of a fruit I had back home cause old people always making up names. I have done intensive research due to my love of nature and fruits.
This is a “Mammy Apple” not an apricot. An apricot is a much smaller peach like fruit. As a matter of fact its a peach without the little hairs on the skin.

It is actually called the mammie Apple, but is locally known as the apricot or Zabricot. So yeah it is not actually apricot, as the actual apricot is a smaller fruit.

Hi it’s called zabricot but save the shin in case it hurt your stomach. I remember eating that early one morning and it hurt my stomach. When my mother came home she used the skin to make tea and what a relief I got.

Nutmeg, lol! Where u from nuh?

      • Justice and Truth
        February 23, 2013

Kiki, this one made me laugh. Some big nutmeg. Nutmeg is one the tiniest. It is in a shell. When the shell is broken it is even smaller. I think Dominican at Heart was joking.
Incidentally there is a small fruit (not as small as nutmeg) in Canada called Kiwi. I love to eat it. It is healthy too.

  61. my take
    February 22, 2013

This is an apricot…Very nice fruit..Growing up we were told be careful what time of day you eat it. And as the saying was make sure ‘you are not hot’ meaning sweating or else you will get sick after consuming it.. Can you believe there are a few people who fear eating this fruit just to be on the safe side. lol

    • Derryck
      February 22, 2013

You are are right as it pertains to the old beliefs. You may recall it was the same for pineapples. As a kid I was careful when I ate pineapples, now only to realize you eat fruits at any time. Those were the “good ole days”

      • Fouchette
        February 25, 2013

The old folk used to say to me ‘Chile doe eat ryefig in de nite, it will hurt you garcon”.

    • Justice and Truth
      February 23, 2013

You are correct. I recall my mother would give us, her children fruits with our breakfast; never during the day and at night. We also never drank soft drinks during the day for the same reasons; too hot and we could get sick. There is some truth in that. My parents were conscious of being and keeping healthy and well.
