WEEKEND FUN UPDATE: Name the local Christmas tree

Thanks to all who participated in our Weekend Fun feature.

We asked to name the local tree on the right used as a Christmas tree.

Many got it right. It is a Bay Leaf tree also known as “bois den.”

I saw the trees but did not participate. I would never have guessed that the one in particular is a Bay Leaf tree. It grows tall.
When I resided in DA we had a real tree growing in a certain section of the living room. We would decorate it at Christmas. Prior to that we would purchase a Christmas tree but it had to remain in the cold storage of Hydro then, until practically Christmas week so that it would not become dry.
I hope that the Bay Leaf tree will not be thrown away. I wish I could get some green bay leaves in Toronto. We only get dry ones which we purchase at the store but it does not smell as good as the real green bay leaf. Or I may have to go out of my way, far enough to get the green ones.
I was told that the ‘green herbs’ could be dried and bottled in a tight container and then used when cooking. Great idea.
Will you please send us in Canada some “green bay leaves?” I love the smell. Some recipes call for bay leaves. I would prefer the green ones.

At first I thought it’s a money tree but the leaves look like bwaden / bay leaf.

      December 17, 2012

the other christmas tree to the left is a small table trop tree which has cany canes and these are for the customers who come to the office.

We used Bwaden and Tifey in order to educate people that we are able to utilize our natural products instead of purchasing artificial ones.

Sometimes we just have to let our creative juices flow and find natural resources within our environment instead of always falling for the imported ones.

“candy cane”, a minor error. I agree with you, a tree could be cut down and decorated; also in the yard, if possible.

I am off topic but it reminds me of parsley. I just boiled some and drank it. It cleanses the blood. These herbs are healthy for us. They are not only for cooking. We should boil them and drink the water more frequently; no sugar or salt are required or if you wish, use honey.
Have you noted the tea bags of every sort? In DA where the weather is hot year round, those who have ample yard could grow their own; make use of your yard and save money. It is well-worth the effort.

That’s hardly novel- it’s been done before.
Anyway a poinsettia plant is far more beautiful and fitting for Dominica. It doesn’t require all those ridiculous, garish decorations either.
