National Epidemiologist, Dr Shallaudin Ahmed has announced that to-date Dominica has recorded 42 confirmed cases of Covid-19 with 9 currently active cases.
He made the announcement during a press briefing on Wednesday night.
“As of today the total number of confirmed cases of Covid in Dominica is 42, the number of active cases is 9, the last 7 cases are from 3 different communities, in 3 different health districts,” he said.
He continued, “Of the seven (7), five of them are from one community identified as contacts of a positive case from one particular village.”
Dr. Ahmed said these 5 cases were detected through contact investigation and community drives.
“We have initiated another Community- Based Screening drive, in this phase we have successfully completed 3 communities in 3 health districts,” he stated.
He said a total of 45 individuals were tested using the PCR method and 60 individuals were serological methods from these communities.
“From all the 45 PCR tests only 1 turned out to be positive, however this individual was a contact of one of the earlier positive cases,” Dr. Ahmed explained. “All 60 serology test results are negative for antibodies.”
He went on to say that a total of 105 individuals were screened during the community drive.
In addition to the community screening Dr. Ahmed said another 112 contacts were identified through contact tracing.
“Of these 112, 69 individuals have been tested and of this 69, 4 cases are positive and 65 are negative,” he revealed. “The remaining 43 are pending.”
He indicated that Community- Based Screening in other health districts is to continue in the upcoming days.
“At this stage the transmission still remains as a cluster of cases,” he noted.
Meantime, as the country prepared to celebrate its 42 years of independence, Dr. Ahmed advised members of the public to be mindful of how their behavior may affect the well-being of others, “and so we need to continue to act in ways that prevent the spread of Covid-19.”

So BossMan what you mean by: “Dr. Ahmed said these 5 cases were detected through contact investigation and community drives.”
So basically them people didn’t test positive on a PCR test but just because people say they were in contact with someone or some people then allyou just saying dem people infected???

ADMIN: Link to the original article provided.
I listened to a gentle man on the radio sometime in August spoke about antibodies test on one of the radio station in Dominica, and after I did some research he made a lot of sense.
His question was “why are we doing antibody test at the airport”
I am asking the same question now. Because if someone antibody test is positive, does that means the person is contagious OR not contagious with the virus.
So Dr. Ahmed this is what you said at the press conference according to DNO ““From all the 45 PCR tests only 1 turned out to be positive, however this individual was a contact of one of the earlier positive cases,” Dr. Ahmed explained. “All 60 serology test results are negative for antibodies.”
What does that mean? If someone test positive for antibodies, is that individual treated as an active case?
I am just asking questions here. Can someone please answer me? DNO can you please ask Dr. Ahmed or the minister of Health the above questions?
Why antibody test?
ADMIN: Thank you for your question. We have reached out to the ministry of health for a response on this question.
Below is the response to your question from Dr. Ahmed:
Hi,
Good morning!
My pleasure to answer your questions.
Antibody test at the Airport: There are two types of antibodies can be identified through rapid test i.e. IgM and IgG. IgM antibody appears first, after about 7/8 days from onset, then IgG antibody. Presence of IgM indicates an acute infection, hence there is a possibility of shedding of a virus. IgM decreases/disappears around day-28 from onset. IgG, on other hand, appears just about day 8/9 days from onset, and continue to stay raised in the blood system for months. Presence of IgG indicative of exposure to infection in the past, and not infectious; more like immunity. The reason for rapid test at the Airport, we want to ensure that anyone with IgM positive can be picked up through this screening process. Anyone who is IgM positive, is further tested using the PCR method. We had 2/3 IgM positive cases who turned out to be positive on PCR method.
Serology test: It is also an antibody testing method, but much more reliable than rapid test. The main objective of using serology for the purpose of community screening, is to identify any ongoing community transmission. If there were any positive IgG cases, it would tell us that the proportion of our population (based on demographic data) were exposed to COVID-19, which will solidify the hypothesis of community transmission.
I hope, I have answered your question somewhat.
Following the World Health Organization’s recent warning of an exponential rise in infections, here is an uplifting version of “Ode to Joy” from Beethoven’s 9th Symphony to give hope for a better tomorrow.
