PM says Dominican economy is recovering; cites $22M sent by Haitians to Haiti, among other signs

PM Skerrit at Thursday’s Cabinet Press Briefing last week

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has announced that despite the economic downturn caused by COVID-19, the economy is showing signs of recovery.

Speaking during a recent cabinet press conference, the finance minister announced that although the economy has not gotten back to where it was pre-pandemic, progress is being made.

“As you know our economy was projected to grow by 5.6% in 2020, following another 9.7% the year before with a number of capital projects that were on stream but here came the pandemic,” he pointed out.

While he notes that the economy is not doing as bad as it was in the early stage of the pandemic, he disclosed that we’re not bringing in the revenue that we were bringing in at the same period in  2015.

“But we are seeing progress,” Skerrit stated. “We are seeing improvement in the economy, and of course  we are marking this from the revenues coming from the income tax and the value-added tax.”

Another sign of growth in the economy he noted was the million sent out by Haitian nationals who reside here in Dominica, during the past two years.

“To also say to the Dominican public when we complain that there is no money in the economy or there are no jobs, the record shows that just Haitian nationals sent out 22 million dollars in 2020 via money gram and western union,” he stated. “22 million dollars in COVID-19 period…and in 2019 they sent out 23 million dollars. So I wanted to put  this important piece of fact so that people appreciate that we may not be where we want but  there are opportunities for us as Dominicans to do so.”

Notwithstanding the challenges of the economy, the head of Government emphasized that his government has continued to honour its responsibility.

“We have also maintained consistent payment to the national employment programme to the 70 and over allowance, notwithstanding the fact that there may be one of two students in between who may sometimes are not dealt with administratively in terms of the payments of the  school fees, we have paid them for this financial year about 22 million dollars to students studying overseas.”

He went on to commend residents for what he has labelled as “industriousness” in the face of the pandemic.

“People have adapted as a result of COVID-19 and you have seen people change their business model. They have brought in new businesses and my hope and prayer is that we will see these things continue with us as a legacy of COVID-19,” Skerrit said.

The Prime Minister further stressed that importance for citizens to provide support to those types of enterprises going forward.

I have never heard such scrap!! 🥸 Is this from a Finance Minister? If these large sums of money were in circulation in here, one could say that the country is recovering economically. These large sums are being drained out of Dominica’s economy. This is like stabbing someone, watching them bleeding to death and boasting they are healthy, look how much blood they have.

More than half the time the more stupid some people are it’s the smarter they think they are!

If you were not ………; who can’t understand what I wrote, if you are not mathematically inclined, if you do not understand simple arithmetic: Rasta Man broke it down to you in a simple way, that should cause you to see you are a very ignorant person not capable of understanding anything!

Take a hike, who cares who went  where, Europeans, Americans, and people of the world in general travels the world over, and settles.

There are more Dominicans in the diaspora than in Dominica, if the millions of dollars Roosevelt is talking about Haitians sends to Haiti, Dominicans in the diaspora could send that home; Dominica would not be the poorest nation on the planet!

And mind you we in the diaspora do send money to Dominica; shut your damn mouth.

Last year 2020, I built a house in Dominica for my sister; right this moment I am helping.

Last year 2020, I built a house in Dominica for my sister; right this moment I am helping; a young lady I never met, who have a need; I decided to help her build her house, there are other Dominicans who are doing the same as I am doing; but surely our contribution amounts not to twenty-two million dollars per any one year.

      God bless Dominica what?

If what Roosevelt said was true than I would also say God Bless Dominica, but the only people who are blessed financially are those who sells passports, and those Roosevelt favors.

The foreigners Roosevelt pays a fee of twenty ($20,000,000.00) million free, plus money he claims to build hotel on the island, put that into your damn head okay stop responding to people talking fart when you do not know what is taking place in Dominica.

In that case the Haitians have more money than what revenue is in the government treasury!

How many Haitians resides in Dominica?

I wonder how the PM can state so categorically how much money has been remitted to Haiti via privately owned commercial money exchanges. What is the reporting responsibility of WU and MG?

I would be more interested in learning how much Haitian nationals have contributed in income taxes, pension payments and other social benefits payments IN Dominica – once those have been paid, then who the heck cares what they do with what’s left over? Or, is it impossible to report such information that would benefit all Dominicans because because the funds are acquired illegally and there are no taxes being paid? Bearing in mind that most Dominicans who remitted funds from overseas were legal residents of wherever they were, paid their dues, and then sent money home.

BTW this is a global census year. When is the census being held there?

Just listen to this foolish man… If anybody wants to see the evidence of how well our country is doing just look at the Dominica State College! On a slightly different note, should a man that measures how well our country is doing economically on the amount of money that foreigners sent to their country of origin, be Minister of Finance, let alone PM??? How about using the rate of employment, the average income per household…

The last time it was the Dominican Economy is doing very well to the point Dominicans at home were sending monies to Families in the USA via MoneyGram and Western Union.

This time it is the Dominican Economy is doing well but it is not because of Dominicans. It is because of the Haitians who sent home $22M in 2020 during Covid-19. ( LOLOLOL)…via MG and WU which is approximately $2M monthly.

Skerrit is tired of disrespecting Dominicans intelligence and he needs a serious “Public” flogging.

He has Voodoo Economics supported by a Ponzi Scheme!!!!

It would have been better if Skerritt had pointed to the fact that he is able to pay Dennis Byron $450,000 to undertake a useless and biased exercise which outcome is pre-determined as proof that things are on the up and up. Why didn’t Skerritt point to the amount of money received in the country from overseas residing Dominicans? It’s called lying with statistics and he knows that those who are “red” won’t do a deep dive into whatever he says.

  8. Change
    May 11, 2021

What is it that Dominicans are so afraid of? In Myanmar, despite over 700 hundred having been killed by the military, they are still protesting. Why are Dominicans afraid to stand up for themselves? People understand, there is less than 600 security officials in this State, they cannot kill us all. If we don’t begin to stand up for ourselves and our children and grandchildren NOW, we will be sorry later. The longer we wait, the harder it will become to rid ourselves of the corrupt, greedy, uncaring entity that is in power. Time to begin the winds of change.

@The Truth Be Told, you are way off base. The focus and subject of this article is Skerritt’s absurd assertion that because some Haitians sent $22 million to their loved ones back home, then the Dominican economy is doing very well. Only a double doctorate dude with honorary doctorates can come up with such an absurd matrix for grading economic performance. Since this subject has nothing to do with praising Castle Bruce, you are way off base and I’m not following you into that rabbit hole, but prefer to remain on message. Why don’t you want me to be critical of Skerritt? Do you want me to criticize “Ugly Willy” instead for the short comings in the country? I see many wrong things with governance of the country and it’s my right to point those out, especially since it’s a populist, quasi autocratic leadership style that passes for Democracy. I’m sure that you criticized Trump yet you don’t want me to criticize Skerritt. Hypocrite.

Roosevelt, you are a born liar, you will forever be a damn liar to the day of your exit into eternal oblivion.

Dominica Roosevelt is a place with no industries, no employment; tell the world from what source these Haitians get the how many millions you are talking sent to Haiti.

You are so ignorant; that is why I have to choke you as soon as you open your mouth.

    Look at this: 22,000,000.00 / 70,000.00 = 314,285.71.

The point I am trying to make is that Dominicans claim there are 70, 000.00 people in Dominica, they are not all Haitians, so for that to happen in any one year, seventy thousand Haitians would each have to send approximately three ($314,285.71) hundred-fourteen thousand dollars and seventy-one cents to Haiti in a year, or ten years which ever you prefer Roosevelt!

You see how easy it is to prove someone a lying idiot!

If there are 70, 000 people in Dominica, 96% are unemployed; account for the money from where it came?

Roosevelt, you can lie and make belief as much as you wish; but Dominica will eventually collapses under your feet, while you are selling Dominica passports which is the nations only industry, and the main source of revenue!

Your math is incorrect. Its $314 (three hundred and fourteen….) not three hundred thousand.
But your theory still stands that it is an alarming amount. As to the honesty of the PM i cant say because i havent seen or received the statistics from the payment gateway institutions.
But if the country has 5000 Haitians(assumption) they each on average would have to send $4,400xcd. I don’t think thats impossible.
I believe however that our census should include more data, and such data made available to the public. Nowhere on the internet could i find general demographics or even an idea as to how many immigrants we have on island whether Haitian or other.

What do you expect from a ruler who has barricaded himself in a $29 000 000 palatial mansion surrounded by a high concrete fence guarded by a trigger happy militia.

Where are the results from last census? Where the annual reports from statistics division? The air coming from Skerrit mouth stinks of disrespect for the Dominica population. This tells me tbe PM is convinced Dominicans are fools why he speaks such crap. How much of that revenue bleeding was paid in taxes? How much of that bleeding when to social security? These means that 22 million is taken out of circulation in Dominica that is not used to pay banks etc. Just recently you gave aid bank 27 million. Cant you guys see this foll need to be removed from office. This is purely to insult dominicans tell them they should shut up. How much money came into the country through remuneration? Family sending home money to fill family void. You seem to have info from monegram and western union. If that is the standard which you measure economic recovery then the ministry of finance is really ran by an asterisk. A real Jack Asterisks.

People were not ‘made to scrunt’. You must and should create surplus, then use the surplus to big us up and make our lives easier. Like they do in one of our favorite places, Dubai. Love Haitien people for who they are historically etc, they work hard and so do we.
Create surplus, work surplus to make living easier here! You know what I mean, yes you do.

Foolish talk by a PM who lacks intellect, and one who is totally unfit to govern. Skerrit is detached from the struggles of the ordinary Dominican, that cannot put bread on his table. Go walk the streets of Roseau, and you will hear and feel the struggles of the people. But you don’t care a darn… Was that the reason why you took EC$64000.00 a month while other people got nothing?
Now tell us how many billions other companies have shipped out of Dominica while locals cannot get a job.

This unadulterated garbage emanating from Skerrit’s lying mouth shows his depraved indifference to the desperate conditions that thousands of Dominicans are going though at this present moment.

For this man to claim that the economy was vibrant before Hurricane Maria and is roaring back at present is cartoonishly laughable.

If Haitians were having it so good as this mendacious man confidently posited then why so many of them are risking their lives and freedom to exit Dominica illegally for greener pastures in neighboring islands?

Mr. Skerrit when your wall of lies is put under scrutiny it comes tumbling down to rubble. You live in a post truth biosphere with your cabinet of straw weight disciples.

But de money going out of Dominica Skerrit. I know of foreign contractors who only hire non-Dominicans only Haitians. Can you imagine de imagine de boost in our tax revenue that would be created by EMPLOYED DOMINICANS?
Haitians don’t pay taxes neither social security contribution. So who really benefited? We see dem in long lines everyday. We see who benefiting.
How much did Dominicans bring into the country by de way…. just curious?

Probably you should have asked the Haitians to fix the DSC and put desks for the students.
What does Haitians sending moneys overseas have to do with what the Government puts in place to facilitate it’s Citizens?
What about remittances to Dominica from families overseas? Can we also use this as a measure of how difficult or needy the country is?
No doubt there are opportunities for all in Dominica, and I agree Dominicans can do way more, but that does not pardon or minimize the impacts of the Government’s poor decision making.
Use Dominica money more strategically, for example employ local contractors to run some of the major projects , and put the Passport money in the treasury at the disposal of all Dominicans.
It was so embarrassing to see the state of the College today, and I can’t understand what Haitian money have to do with that. It was a terrible decision to stop tuition fees, and I’m afraid this is a sign of the impending state of the various Apts. built over the…

It just goes to show the PM doesn’t know anything about economics. Money made in Dominica and sent to Haiti is a loss to the Dominican economy and a boon to the Haitian economy. Simple as that.

PAPA GOD!!!. People, i urge you to go to Morne Daniel where he is building his wall. You will see Chinese people, and about 3 or 4 young black men. These young men are Haitians. Skerrit have a partner, an older gentleman with cornrows in his hair (from St. Joe) that does organise for all the haitians for skerrit to work on his farm. So if is Chinese and Haitian alone that getting work here, they do right send back 22million in Dominican money outside of the country. Meanwhile Dominicans will remain poor and hungry and not stand up for their rights in a country that is ours.

when Haitians protested and made their noice for visa, not one police was sent to beat and shoot them. Today students protesting for better facilities, riot squad and police in fatigues up stockfarm. Bus drivers, same thing. Come Roseau on a saturday night and he will see the economy booming. Place does be like a ghost town. Skerrit living in his own world of stolen money and illusions.
