A call for public officers to be valued and respected

Thomas Letang

Thomas Letang, the General Secretary of the Dominica Public Service Union (DPSU), has been vocal about the significant contributions of public officers and the importance of valuing and respecting them. He emphasizes that public officers play a crucial role in the functioning of the government and the delivery of essential services to the public.

Letang has called for better treatment, recognition, and respect for these workers, highlighting that their dedication and hard are vital for the country’s progress.

The DPSU General Secretary made this statement during the Caribbean Public Services Association (CPSA) Solidarity Day on October 4, 2024. This day is dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the contributions of public sector workers across the Caribbean. The theme for this year’s Solidarity Day was “Public Sector Unions, the bridge to better quality lives for workers and their families”.

In his statement, Letang emphasized the critical role that public officers play in society, particularly during crises. He highlighted the essential services provided by public sector workers, such as those in emergency management, health, fire services, and security forces. Letang pointed out that these workers are often undervalued and disrespected despite their significant contributions.

He called for greater unity among public sector unions to build strength and power to advocate for better working conditions and recognition. Letang also stressed the importance of inclusive discussions and consultations with public officers in policy decisions that affect them. He underscored that valuing and respecting public officers not only boosts their morale but also enhances the overall efficiency and effectiveness of public services.

Letang’s message was a call to action for all stakeholders, including employees, employers, the community, and unions, to play their part in supporting public sector workers. He also took the opportunity to salute teachers during International Teacher’s Week and International Teachers Day, acknowledging their invaluable service in shaping the minds and character of young people.

    Dar-Pway-Wuuu Letting!

When last did you send a clear message to those abusing public servants that nothing -tal go so by calling a nationwide strike? And before you ask why, let me tell you there were NUMEROUS opportunities to do so. Check your conscience bro and you will find the answers. In the meantime, SHUT THE HELL UP!! You have overstayed your welcome at the helm and DPSU members must ask for your resignation before its too late.

What works well, will always be a good relationship between us, the people and those who serve us. That relationship must grounded in Love, for without Love, nothing will work.

Can anyone reliably inform me of any transformative changes in the betterment of the lives and circumstances of public servants since the thirty (30) years stewardship of Thomas Letang?

He has done absolutely nothing to improve the lot of workers. Why this individual is still at the helm of the pubic union defies all reasonableness. This is a man when the government gave civil servants an increase of 1.5%, unconscionably, Mr. Letting applauded the government calling it a good deal.

I have reluctantly come to the conclusion that Dominicans relish mediocrity. The sad thing though, lethargy and passivity have become an intractable part of the psychic of the average Dominican.
