Up and coming Dominican cricketer, Alick Athanaze, scored his first century in regional First Class Cricket on Thursday.

This latest achievement by Athanaze was made at the Grenada National Stadium in a match between the Windwards Volcanoes and Guyana Harpy Eagles.

Athanaze scored a total of 141 runs before he was out.

In the Winward Volcanoes V Guyana Harpy Eagles match on Wednesday, the Volcanoes won the toss and at tea had reached 231 for six.

Athanaze has been making a name for himself on the cricket scene.

He made his List A debut for the West Indies Under-19s in the 2016–17 Regional Super50 on 25 January 2017.

That same year he made it to the West Indies squad for the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup.

He has been dubbed “the little magician from Dominica” by West Indies Cricket and labelled as the rising star in West Indies cricket by the International Cricket Council.

The 24-year-old Athanaze was recently named captain of the Windwards Volcanoes.

I have already congratulated the young man. But I am left to ask; What about the young Pascal boy whom has displayed great capabilities in the sport? Have the Dca Cricket Association and the region by extension forgotten him? I hope its not another case of pressing another poor bro son. Just wondering

You are aware that the President, Vice-President and several other members of the board of directors (including Daren Sammy) are “small islanders,”, aren’t you?

What are they waiting for? Get him on the WI team. I was best from 19-25. Sports is played by the young. Plus, the old guys are chasing fame, money and the latest fashion.
Need youngsters who are all in and love playing for its own sake,.

Kudos to him. Sadly, a rising star in the Caribbean does not amount to much outside the region. If at 24 and considering the dearth of batting within the current West Indies team, one has to wonder about his true ability when compared to batsmen of the other major teams.
    Just saying…..

You are so right. When you consider that this young man amassed the most runs in the under 19 World Cup not long ago, if he was from Barbados, Trinidad, Jamaica, Guyana or even Antigua, he would have been propelled onto the senior West Indies team then and would have been a regular. And when you consider the Windies team with all those floundering batsmen, you have to wonder why Athanaze not given his big break. It’s all about the insular mentality that have been plaguing West Indies cricket since the days when West Indies were the dominant cricketing force in the world. We can only reminisce those good old days.

Very well done youngster, congratulations. Keep it up, remain levelheaded, and immerse yourself in the game.

This young man needs to be invested in, opportunities need to be created for him, our national cricket leadership/management, national sports organizations, and the sports’ ministry/government needs to ensure his exposure at the highest possible levels. He needs to be give all the necessary support there is. His success will be huge for Dominica and upcoming sports men and women in Dominica.

If left on his own or not sufficient all-round support is give them his will soon become another statistics, a great potential sports personality that got no where. We can’t depend solely on local and regional exposure for him and on West Indies Cricket Board because you know how it is for the “small Islanders.”

Let’s ensure “the little magician from Dominica” realizes his fullest potential.
