BREAKING NEWS: Dominica records first positive case of coronavirus (COVID-19)

Dominica has reported its first positive case of the dreaded COVID-19 coronavirus.

Minister for Health, Wellness and New Health Investment, Irving McIntyre, made the announcements in a media statement just moments ago.

McIntyre said that the patient is a 54-year-old Dominican citizen who recently returned to Dominica from the United Kingdom. He said the individual was placed under home quarantine from the time of arrival and has been under surveillance by a medical team.

The minister added that the person is being treated in a special isolation unit and will remain there until recovery.

“In accordance with public health practices, the ministry of health has initiated aggressive contact tracing to identify every individual who may have come into close contact with this patient,” McIntyre stated. “All individuals identified during contact tracing will be tested and placed under quarantine.”

He said the primary focus of the ministry of health is to ensure containment and prevent in-country transmission and assured the public that all necessary actions are being taken.

“The ministry advises the public to continue to follow proper hygiene, respiratory etiquette, and social distancing,” the health minister stated,” and to “inform health officials in their districts about anyone not adhering to quarantine measures.”

The video of the Health Minister’s announcement is posted below.

Dominicans is all of us that in it. What that have to do with closing borders. Did you read the news. The guy is a Dominican. Wasn’t it Dominicans that was saying ” everybody sending for their people, why they dough send for them” Look they come now. White man and Italian didn’t bring it down. Those same Dominicans all you wanted to bring down is them. So shut up about closing port and air port. the ports were open for Dominicans to be allowed to come home.

Those boats on the bay front is bring down Dominicans. Port dough open for Cruise ship visitors. Use all you heads>>All you seeing nobody going on vacation now?

Stop that politics nonsense. All Grenada port and schoolS close and they still get it. The VIRUS IS AIRBORNE. Can you CLOSE DOWN air???? People need to make the right decision at the right time. Closing schools down last month would solve nothing? cuz this month the virus still in full effect. You cannot control this virus you can only contain it..

I’m from the UK parents are from DA. Why the hell is Dominica allowing people in their country especially from England!!. Can’t they see what is going on ??. Those who are age 70 and over and or have underlying medical conditions have been asked to stay at home. They are saying they are trying to lessen the blow in preparation for when the peak happens as the health service here will struggle and not enough beds, ventilators etc. Who am I to tell anyone how to run their country but in my opinion Dominica should wise up have tighter border controls , this virus is world wide now !!. Make sure people please follow good hand hygiene practice , wash your hands for 20 seconds all you need is soap and water. !!!!!

    Something is wrong here!

“He said the individual was placed under home quarantine from the time of arrival and has been under surveillance by a medical team.”(McIntyre).

So, how can this be; unless somebody who claims to be a doctor, is also a notorious liar!

“The minister added that the person is being treated in a special isolation unit and will remain there until recovery.”(McIntyre).

How can he be quarantine at home while at the same time being treated in some special isolation unit?

Why not take said individual and put them in a container at the back of the hospital for three weeks now said individual was all over the village.
So what’s with all that hocus pocus of having the best test and only people who can test etc etc.

What difference would it make if all those questions you all are asking would be answered?

You, people fail to humble yourselves and to call upon the Highest of the highs–God Almighty, Eternal Spirit, Christ Himself for His protection through mercy and compassion.

All of the questions that you all are asking, are presenting the notion that you all don’t believe–like there is more to it than that–but how will your unbeliefs solve the problem that we are facing?

To the rest of us, humble and faithful Dominicans, hold on there. There is no Law above the Laws of our Holy God, Most High; our Life situations are ruled by His Laws–whatever they are. However, He can change His mind by our contrite and humble plead–He did that for King Hezekiah, so can He for us

Let us pray that He will give healing to that infected person and that He will block any more entries of the sickness from entering our country and our homes. In the name of Jesus.

Blame the Dominican Government for keeping the entry and exit doors open to every human to come in or to go out. The government could deny entry to anyone and everyone entering for the safety and protection of its citizens. But no they kept on playing hero. How does it work out playing hero? Real stupid. I guess it’s because there’s no money in the treasury so the ports stayed opened so that business would continue as usual. When you have a prime minister who thinks he is invincible and plays with people’s lives that’s the kind of hardship that will prevail because it seems like he speaks for all the ministers and the people are scared of him. When Mr. Linton was trying to present some COMMON SENSE to the nation, he was despised. Our people have to go through disasters first before common sense settles in their brain but sometimes it is too late.

The sad thing about this breaking news is, we sit there and allow Skerrit to lie to us day after day and yet we treat him like he is God. In fact we keep rewarding him with more votes for destroying us and our country. I don’t blame him for COVID-19 because he didn’t create it. But I blamed him for not taking steps to address and protect us from that deadly disease. You already failed to protect our boarders from the hotspots and failed to close down schools and address social gathering, how on Earth could you have someone from England on quarantine at his house and yet the man was going every where? Now the man confirmed positive for the virus all you telling people to call health official if we see them in them in public. I mean they not even saying to call police you know. So Mr. Skerrit, you from Vielle case and know most of the people that came from Guada on Friday and quarantining in Possie. Sir, the majority of them are home 2 days after arriving. So go get them cuz u know…

  18. Stop this pandemic
    March 22, 2020

All Caribbean Governments should stop this pandemic from spreading and close ALL borders unless it is for medical equipment to be transported. Is it risk putting their countrymen in a situation that can be prevented? When government officials report that it is usually mild, have they themselves experienced this to know? Some people said Zika symptoms were mild yet to some it felt like a bus hit them. Look at what is happening all over the world and those in charge should take their heads from out of the sand.

Stop praying to a dead white man on a cross who cannot and will never save us and get back to the god of our forefathers. Can’t we see the situations we are in ever since our forefathers were sold into slavery? I don’t expect to get any thumbs up but I am telling the truth. 1. What flight did he (they) arrive on?
    2. Has the airline been notified?
    3. Have those who went through immigration from that flight been contacted and quarantined?
    4. Have the customs and police/ immigration officers who dealt with him been quarantined along with all those they have interacted with since then been notified and asked to self quarantine?
    5. Has the driver and other people who with him from the airport been quarantined?
    6. Has the police officer that sold him gas in Delices and interacted with him been quarantined?
    7. What about the officers at the officer who sold him gas workplace?

    2. Say I saw a person that was expected by to be in quarantine from Guadeloupe,: the fact that he or she escaped and finds their selves at home or by their boyfriend/girlfriend, what would calling health district do if he or she had the virus and spread it already?
    3. Mr. Minister, check on those that came from Guada in Friday and were supposed to be quarantined in Portsmouth and find out how many were there and how many missing. That is such a joke with these movie stars that go my the name of ministers boy. Call bobbles and find out

And for God’s sake I do pray that it can, I have strong concerns.

You do not know how long is person has been in the country and how widespread this person has been moving. Dominica has so many elderly people and I’m telling you straight that there’s no way on earth your people are strong enough.

it’s all going to be a matter of luck to understand just how many people is person has been in contact with, and who they’ve been in contact, with and who they’ve been in contact with…..and so on. It works like that. PREVENTION WAS THE ONLY CARD YOU HAD TO PLAY.

Doc Mc, PM, Dominicans, how did the man arrive on island, private jet?
Who screened him at immigrations, don’t you think these officers have friends and family that they’ve been in contact with? And these ppl have been to shops and supermarkets… Our entire airport is now contaminated. How did he get home, teleportation? Did he even go home straight? Who does he live with, where do these people work?
Dominicans protesting for all kinds of maji but sitting down and mumble behind social media where their health is concerned?
What coshoni that?! As my granny would say tanto tanto

Look Luanda, I understand your concern, which I share with you but does it have any Dominican that can fly back home from the U.K. by private jet? As I understand it he was a BA to passenger that connected by Liat to Melvill Hall from Antigua. They obviously knew he showed symptoms upon arrival but what bothers me greatly that they allowed him to go home to self quarantine and not isolate him straightaway. Also, they obviously knew that he was being tested when the Govt had their press conference last Friday. Yes, they may have been truthful in telling us they had no confirmed case yet but they could have told us a suspect was being tested. You see that is what I dislike about Skerrit. We never get the full story so it is difficult to believe him. I suggest we cut our costs and postpone that cricket tournament this summer because I do not think visitors will come anyway.

Guess people should be told who is in quarantine.

    • Dominican Queen
      March 23, 2020

No they should not. This creates a stigma. You would not line to be in this Dominican society with everyone knowing that you were isolated for any reason. You don’t know who any other government had quarantined, why missy Dominica say?

I’m a concern citizen, I think a vital piece of information is missing. On what day did the person fly into Dominica. I think we need to know.

    • Father C
      March 23, 2020

There is a good reason for them not making this public! I’m sure you can answer for yourself if you take an educated guess. My guess, the person arrived some 7-8 days ago.

    • Dominican Queen
      March 23, 2020

Why is the day necessary? Will you go back in time and fix things?

      I think so too.

  37. The dead don't talk
    March 22, 2020

If only IF Only, the dead could talk then they would have told us that they died in Dominica with coronavirus. But unfortunately the dead only vote in Dominica. Here is my favorite passage in the bible: Luke 16: 30 “And he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ 31He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’”

Oh yeah, what is the person’s name? is that person a native? Have they been to infected countries? Village is that person from? how long has that person been on the island? who are the people they are related too? Basically can we see the medical records. This is the news information we would like.

    • Dominican
      March 22, 2020

I don’t think the person’s medical records is any of your business tbh.. If you read it, you would have seen they came from the UK, which is an infected country.

    • Q..?
      March 22, 2020

God forbid, if you are HIV positive, would you be okay with your personal medical file be on social media for everyone to see? Do you think that you knowing can prevent the spread? The person is being quarantined…that’s all the public needs to know and we pray..

    • Dominican Queen
      March 23, 2020

Why you need all of this information? You gonna fix things? What other country is giving this information? You will put many people’s lives at stake with this in. No you cannot know anything more than there’s a case on the island!!

    • Concerned Citizen
      March 23, 2020

Please let us know who these ppl are so those who have made contact can identify themselves or quarantine themselves. This is how we the public can help at this point.

      March 23, 2020

This really isnt a time for political nonsense. Not a single country was prepared for coronavirus. Not even the most advanced nations in the world.

This really isnt a time for “what should have been done” even if we had shut out borders…ppl would come in illegally….even if we try to enforce quarantine…some stubborn idiot will always ignore the quarantine.

Remember the ebola outbreak ? Ppl DUG TUNNELS TO ESCAPE QUARANTINE !

We need to unite as a people. It is already here. The fight is in our court. Let us fight together.

There are too many inconsistencies and lack of transparency in Dr. McIntyre’s story to engender trust. As others have written, why not state the date the man arrived from U.K.? When exactly was test administered and how long before results were confirmed? If he was under home quarantine, was family/neighbors/village informed? Allegations are that he worshiped Sunday morning at Delices Pentecostal church, and only afterwards was picked up by ambulance.
US President Trump denied/hid the truth for weeks resulting in HUGE increase of infections. Dominica must immediately lock down all ports and village of Delices (if confirmed) and be MUCH more open with what is known. The people will always find the truth.

    • Dominican Queen
      March 23, 2020

You are a sign of poor leadership. If you were on your way home from vacation and could not get in because Skerro get that morning abs closed all boarders you’d have a different song singing. Easy to say what should be done when you’re not the one making the decision.

    • Dominican to the bone.
      March 23, 2020

If the border was closed a week ago wouldn’t make a diffence. Carnival was late last month and citizens and visitors were in and out. It was business as usual. No one complained. Globally, we are in a crisis. No one is to be blamed for Coronavirus. First let’s help one another including the government. Stop the name-calling; stop the properganda, and stop the politics. You may not like your PM, but his the PM. Let’s pray and help one another. Follow the guidelines, wash your hands thoroughly, stop socializing and stop criticizing. Peace!

Its similar to if we are looking for band substances entering our country, we will report our first arrest for the band substance but how many people entered through the non policed ports of entry and was not caught, or those who entered legally but were not screened? the question remains; how many positive cases really exist and how many unsuspecting deaths was caused by this virus? Only questions

I am so upset because if they had close the borders that uk man would not enter. I knew that they were waiting for the virus to reach and then close…total nonsense. Allu not easy eh. So allu satisfy it reach eh well look it..me self so long i in my hole..my border close long time. I hope allu contain that sh%t from spreading.

    • Dominica Ready!!!
      March 22, 2020

So I hope the PM had already installed standpipes throughout the community that the coronavirus patient came from, with pipe attendants , so they could teach the people from that area how to wash their hands to ensure the virus doesn’t spread. Skerrit said he installing standpipes in Roseau to keep the virus out. Boy these guys just sickening

I guess some people are happy now. It was to goog to be true that we have no cases…Dominica not good enough to have no cases. It was inevitable…we held out for as long as possible. What matters is that the authorities continue to do their best and the public continues to practice proper hygiene, hand washing etc.
