Close to 900 students writing CSEC exams this year

A total of 898 candidates will be writing the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) exams this year.

The CSEC exams are scheduled for May 23rd, 2022 to June 24th, 2022.

“One hundred and thirty-six (136)  Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination  (CAPE) candidates and 553 Caribbean Certificate of Secondary Level Competence (CCSLC) candidates,” Local CXC Registrar, Magalie Celestine, said. “CAPE exams will run from May 23rd, 2022 to the 1st of July 2022, and CCSLC Exams are scheduled from June 27th to 30th 2022.”

She said further that the exams will be administered across 19 centres around the island with a team of 70 members serving as chief invigilators, centre supervisors and invigilators.

Celestine stated that this year all paper 1 exams will be administered online.

“A few paper 2 exams will also be administered online in selective subjects at selective schools,” she stated.

The CXC Registrar went on to say that for the first time in 2022, the CAPE performing arts are being offered in Dominica by the Dominica Institute for The Arts.

“In addition, for the very first time the St John’s Academy is offering CAPE exams,” Celestine revealed.

She continued, “I expect all candidates to be equipped with the material that they need for the exams which would include their picture ID, scientific calculators, geometry sets, 3B pencils, just in case we have to do our exams on paper, simple blue or black ink pens, erasers.”

Celestine said materials should be carried in a clear plastic container.

Meantime, she encourages all students to limit their activities on the outside and to keep safe as Covid-19 is still present.

“In the event that they have contracted the COVID virus during the exams, they need to inform their principal immediately who will in turn, inform me to make arrangements for their exams,” Celestine advised.

I hope that all the students sitting the 2023 CSEC exams will pass 100% of the subjects taken even though that is mathematical improbable.

Many of these students in addition to those graduating from local college and overseas universities will be seeking gainful employment. Where are these jobs coming from in this anemic economy to accommodate such large numbers of prospective job seekers?

Inevitably, the unemployment rate will be stretching until it loses its elasticity. Higher unemployment means more crime, more hunger, more suffering, more vagrancy.

Our education system leans too heavily on academics. We should give more importance to skill development because this way we can end unemployment. Most citizens will become their own employers through entrepreneurship.

I am interested in these statistics. How many students entered Secondary School five years ago. Those who entered 1st Form in 2017 should be exiting 5th Form this year, 2022.

The question is simply this. How many dropped out? How many will leave with five (5) or more CXC subjects? These are the most important statistics to inform our education system. We must not get carried away with the few who passed 10, 11 or 12 subjects.
