Longshoremen and stevedores will now see an end to a 22-year-old dispute over a 33 percent cut in their salaries.
Recent developments have seen the Government of Dominica announcing a resolution of the long-standing salary dispute between port workers and the Dominica Air and Sea Ports Authority (DASPA).
“Following a process of mediation led by the Honorable Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, an agreement was reached bringing closure to years of negotiations between longshoremen and stevedores and the Board of Directors and management of DASPA,” a release from the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) stated.
On Tuesday, DASPA disbursed a cheque of EC$4 million to port workers affected by the salary matter.
“Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit expresses gratitude to the port workers, the representatives of the Waterfront and Allied Workers Union (WAWU), and DASPA for their constructive engagement in the mediation process,” the OPM release said. “He reaffirms the Government’s commitment to protecting workers’ rights and welfare and fostering a stable environment for Dominica’s economic growth and development.”
Over 100 workers have been affected by this impasse.
During a meeting with port workers on May 14 this year, the prime minister revealed that the longstanding dispute between the Dominica Air and Seaport Authority (DASPA) and the longshoremen and stevedores is something that he had been tackling.
At the time, he described the engagement with the port workers, including the executive, the board, and the management of DASPA as a “very constructive mutually respectful” one.
Skerrit mentioned during his end-of-year press conference on Friday, December 15, 2024, that DASPA was authorized to borrow those funds from the National Bank of Dominica (NBD) and it was approved by the bank.
So in essence, this dispute has been going on throughout the lifetime of Foolsvelt Skerrit’s reign over Dominica and he is only now, only now seeing fit to end the long suffering. nonsense. There are technical officers in charge of that. Like the labor commissioner, who will report to Skerrit so he will be aware of everything. Thats how governments work. Otherwise, why not let skerrit drive the garbage truck too and go clean the sidewalks or direct traffic in the mornings. He can, but there are other people for that. Thats why what you said is nonsense. let the technical officers do their jobs. thats what they are paid to do. They also have to be respected in their capacities.
