Dickon Mitchell’s National Democratic Congress (NDC) wins Grenada general elections

Dickson Mitchell

Newcomer to the political arena in Grenada, 44-year Dickon Mitchell, led his National Democratic Congress (NDC) to a 9-6 victory in Grenada’s general elections held today.

The NDC ousted 75-year-old, veteran politician, New National Party Political DC political leader, Dr. Keith Mitchell who is the longest-serving prime minister of Grenada, having served in that capacity from 1995 to 2008 and again from 2013 to 2022. Mitchell was, however, able to comfortably win his seat.

The NDC’s Dickon Mitchell who became leader of his party in October last year defeated, the Foreign Affairs Minister, Oliver Joseph, in the former NNP administration to win his parliamentary seat.

The NDC said in a message on its website that the party was “overwhelmed with gratitude” for its victory and told Grenadians that “now the hard work begins” as… “together, we are moving Grenada FORWARD.”

Aren’t most of the nuts and bolts of the corrupt cabal anxious to see the result of the report our $500,000 paid Byron to produce? Well I’m anxious and wondering if we’ll even get one. To those who sing the praises of Skerritt why aren’t they asking for what belongs to all Dominicans, the Dennis Byron report. That’s not hard to do, is it? If they feel so confident of Labor why not prove it by asking for the report. The report won’t change support for Labor die hards but will change the rules of the corrupt game as played by the pied Piper Skerritt.

Truth is neither Linton nor any other challenger will be able to dislodge PM Skerrit anytime soon. Skerrit’s political support system is too strong and wide. From Bill Clinton, Joe Biden, the majority of OECS leaders and others, and foreign diplomats, the PM is very well regarded and reputed.

His broad experience, level headeness and committment to moving Dominica forward have been instrumental in allowing this astute public servant to stay the course inspite of some vile and undue criticism from his detractors.

Grenadians were inspired to change by a vibrant viable alternative who captured their imaginations of the possibilities under his leadership.

    Just saying…maybe that’s what we’re lacking.

Some welcome news for a change!!! Congrats to Dickson Mitchell for finally dispatching long serving Dictator Mitchell. Kudos to the Grenadian electorate for finally realizing that a Prime Ministrial appointmnt does not equate to a permanent Kingship.

Grenadian way of thought is totally different to Dominica’. The new Mr Mitchell had been doing the work needed , unlike Da’ UWP’ Mr Linton , who’s job it seems, is grasping at shadows. Most don’t ever comprehend that change must come from within self. Grenada’ history have continue to show us that they are willing to experiment with change. Is there more Melanin on the Spice Island? Nature Island people must” comprand” that, “when we all think alike, We don’t think very much”.

I have to give Kudos to Grenada for the manner in which their general election was conducted.

It was generally issues oriented; vote counting was relatively quick; there was no controversy about treating or cheating; no threats of court action.

Corruption, controversy, shenanigans, chicanery, skulduggery, and every conceivable wrong has perpetually dogged the election process in Dominica. Where is the much hyped Dennis Byron and his $ 500 000 Electoral Reform Report? Dominica is not for real.

Not a surprise at all that you give kudos to everybody who wins an election only to find out thereafter that they are no better and no more brilliant than the Supreme Leader, The Ayatollah Dr. Roosevelt Skerrit. Dominicans would be stupid to say the least to dethrone Skerrit. Skerrit is here to stay, brother, like it or not. You are just one ……. out of 80,000 people. Nobody cares about you and Francisco and how you both feel. You both are nonentities, pariahs and have been outlawed and exiled. You have so much freedom given to you by Skerrit to say anything that if you were in North Korea you would not have been able to utter not even a whisper or else you would have had a date with the hangman or the firing squad. That is how much freedom you got in Dominica. Thanks to Skerrit.

What you all are ashamed of admitting is the lazy, arrogant, clueless and brainless of a leader and opposition that you all have.
There will continue to be plenty talk of change and how DA need to do like Grenada but before there can be any change in Government here there must first be a major shake up and change in the opposition and its leadership and the mindset of all its followers and supporters, if not it will remain labour for 60 years.

I hope PM designate, Dickson Michelle will not be only a breath of fresh air for politics confined to Grenada but for the Caribbean also.

What the region needs is participatory politics and the end of hyper partisanship and corrupt practices. There should be fixed date for elections, freedom of information, an emphasis on transparency and accountability, etc.

Presently, the Caribbean needs transformational leadership. One that inspires people to strive for excellence in their overall attitude. One where citizens on opposite sides of the aisle can get along (live peacefully) despite their political differences.

After all these years of fierce political acrimony in each Caribbean country, we deserve a respite from that. We need leadership that is not only progressive but is politically therapuetic.

@Ibo France, I’m in total agreement with you here except that a fixed elections date is not absolutely necessary for good, honest, ethical, transparent governance.

But otherwise, very well articulated and we do need this quality of governance in Dominica immediately.

UWP will not and cannot win an election in Dominica. In the 2014 election they got 17,587 votes.Five(5) years later they got 16,424 votes,They lost a total of 1,163 votes.Instead they go back to the drawing board to find out why the lost all those votes, they talking BS about plane loads of voters coming to vote for Labour. These UWP people lying so much, with all the plane loads upon plane loads,Labour only Labour only got 222 more votes than they got in 2014.UWP problem is that they criticize everything the government do in favour of the people.Housing revolution they against.$300 for the elderiy they against.NEP they against,Yes we care they against.Hospital user fee removed they vex.Give people land at $1 a sq ft they vex. They say by the sweat of thy brow,as if a 70 year old who did not do to well should not get help from government.UWP cannot win by campaigning against the social programme, and with supporters like IBO,Francisco-dog and Bwa Banday.

No one man should carry around the date to election in his back pocket and use it to gain an unfair advantage. Most of these Caribbean political leaders use this unfair privilege to spring a surprised election on the opposition parties. Totally unfair. Mia Motley did it recently and caught the opposition with their pants down.

If I am not mistaken Dominica is one of the few countries in the world which have given 3 different political parties a chance to govern (if you count the interim government of Oliver Seraphin then it is 4) and have now decided to stick with the Labour Party, all the other countries rotate around 2 political parties even your great USA. So Skerro when you say “The only place that can’t get a change is da cause they have there brain under there feet with the dictator da is time for a change” You are wrong, when Dominicans are ready both at home and abroad they will do what is in their best interest as they have done before. When there is an EFFECTIVE opposition party that can do more that demonstrate in the streets then Dominicans will open their eyes again.
