For the first time ever, Dominica has a Champion of Comedy.
Cornelius “Saltman” Marie of Canefield had the audience rocking with almost ten minutes of continuous laughter on his way to winning the title of Laugh Out Loud Dominica Comedy Competition on Saturday night at the Goodwill Parish Hall. Marie, who brought the curtains down as the final contestant, defeated fourteen competitors who preceded him to grab the title.
The panel of four judges comprising of Magistrate Gloria Augustus, Delmance Rasmo Moses, Ras Kelly the Ghost Williams, and Curtis Clarendon placed Glenis “Wappo” Harve third and Samson Charles of Portsmouth second.
The competition was organized by the Laugh Dominica Initiative, a collaborative effort of NJAM, DNO ComeseeTv, Q95, and Emo News with support from songwriter Pat Aaron. The event was coordinated by 2013 Golden Drum recipient, Ian Jackson. Sponsorship was provided by AC Shillingford & Co as headline sponsor, Archipelago Trading, ISSA Trading, Jays Bookstore, Dragon windows, DA vibes, Val Ferry, and Dr. Damian Dublin. It was staged to a live audience at the Goodwill Parish Hall and to a pay-per-view audience via ComeseeTv.
Members of The Laugh Dominica Initiative say they are pleased with the high quality of the production and have received very positive feedback from both the in-person and virtual audiences.
The comedy competition is expected to be an annual event but it is also the intention of the organizers to develop the comedy art form as an addition to the night entertainment industry and provide the population and visitors with the opportunity to enjoy another form of clean entertainment.
Laugh Dominica Initiative members extend their appreciation and gratitude to the fifteen aspiring comedians who made the event possible and all those who contributed to the success of the trailblazing event.
What are you talking about? They already got their first Clown and champion of comedy some 20 years ago. Guess what, he’s still there. Nobody gotten sick and tired of his jokes yet. Isn’t it unbelievable?

Congratulations to you “Warpo” Glenis Harve. I always knew that you would gain a sport–3rd place is okay; you can give it another try next year. Be thankful that your name is still on the board.
But will someone tell me who is Cornelius “Saltman” Marie? He lives so close to Giraudel and he has the same name as my sister’s husband–good heavens!
